New spinal implants and surgical procedures are often tested pre-clinically on human cadaver spines. However, the availability of fresh frozen human cadaver material is very limited and alternative animal spines are more easily available in all desired age groups, and have more uniform geometrical and biomechanical properties. The porcine spine is said to be the most representative model for the human spine but a complete anatomical comparison is lacking. The goal of this descriptive study was to compare the anatomical dimensions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae of the human and porcine spine in order to determine whether the porcine spine can be a representative model for the human spine. CT scans were made of 6 human and 6 porcine spines, and 16 anatomical dimensions were measured per individual vertebrae. Comparisons were made for the absolute values of the dimensions, for the patterns of the dimensions within four spinal regions, and normalised values of the dimensions within each individual vertebra. Similarities were found in vertebral body height, shape of the end-plates, shape of the spinal canal, and pedicle size. Furthermore, regional trends were comparable for all dimensions, except for spinal canal depth and spinous processus angle. The size of the end-plates increased more caudally in the human spine. Relating the dimensions to the size of the vertebral body, similarities were found in the size of the spinal canal, the transverse processus length, and size of the pedicles. Taking scaling differences into account, it is believed that the porcine spine can be a representative anatomical model for the human spine in specific research questions.

The potential of spring distraction to dynamically correct complex spinal deformities in the growing child

Sebastiaan P. J. Wijdicks, Justin V. C. Lemans, Gijsbertus J. Verkerke, Herke Jan Noordmans, Rene M. Castelein, Moyo C. Kruyt

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and proof of concept of a spring-based distraction system for patients with progressive early onset scoliosis. Results from a prospective case series of four patients with congenital spine deformities showed that the spring distraction system provided active continuous distraction of the spine to stimulate growth and further correction, with promising outcomes in terms of spinal alignment and growth.

Can breathing gases be analyzed without a mouth mask? Proof-of-concept and concurrent validity of a newly developed design with a mask-less headset

C. C. Roossien, L. A. Krops, J. B. Wempe, G. J. Verkerke, M. F. Reneman

Summary: The study found that the portable headset showed good correlation with the mouth mask in major respiratory parameters, but tended to underestimate at low intensities and overestimate at high intensities. The headset was more effective in estimating VO2 compared to estimates based on heart rate, but was affected by wind flow causing estimation errors.

Automatically Determining Lumbar Load during Physically Demanding Work: A Validation Study

Summary: The study tested the discriminant validity of an artificial neural network-based method for load assessment during actual work. Results showed that during heavy tasks, both the lumbar load and perceived workload were significantly higher than during light tasks; and the lumbar load had significantly higher variances during dynamic tasks, with higher perceived workload levels as well.

Induction of a representative idiopathic-like scoliosis in a porcine model using a multidirectional dynamic spring-based system

Summary: A dynamic torsional device was developed to induce typical axial rotation of scoliosis in mini-pigs while preserving spine growth and mobility. Comparison of two scoliosis induction methods showed that removal of implants resulted in a reduction of induced scoliosis. The study indicates the potential of the torsional device to induce idiopathic-like scoliosis in a flexible and growing spine.

Overview and Strategy Analysis of Technology-Based Nonpharmacological Interventions for In-Hospital Delirium Prevention and Reduction: Systematic Scoping Review

Chan Mi Kim, Esther M. van Der Heide, Thomas J. L. van Rompay, Gijsbertus J. Verkerke, Geke D. S. Ludden

Summary: This systematic scoping review identified 8 different technology types and 14 strategies used in interventions for preventing and reducing delirium in a hospital setting. The interventions were found to have significant positive effects on delirium outcomes, with common elements including a multicomponent approach and addressing psychological needs of patients. The review highlights the potential of technology-based interventions when integrating the multidimensional needs of patients, offering opportunities for developing more effective strategies for delirium prevention.

Effects of Longitudinal Bending Stiffness of forefoot rocker profile shoes on ankle kinematics and kinetics

L. van Kouwenhove, G. J. Verkerke, K. Postema, R. Dekker, J. M. Hijmans

Summary: This study found that the longitudinal bending stiffness of the sole does not affect the biomechanical working mechanism of rocker profile shoes as long as toe plantarflexion is restricted. As long as the forefoot rocker radius supports at least a normal foot-to-horizontal angle at toe-off, there is no reason to increase sole stiffness to change ankle kinematics and kinetics.

Summary: This review paper provides an overview of novel fixation techniques for orthopedic joint implants, including mechanical interlockings, employing adhesives, and tissue-bonding strategies. The development of fixation techniques has shown a shift towards application-specific designs with encouraging results, particularly in mechanical fixations and the potential revolution of orthopedic surgery with (bio)-adhesives.

Bioactive calcium phosphate coatings applied to flexible poly(carbonate urethane) foils

P. Farjam, M. Luckabauer, E. G. de Vries, V. R. Rangel, E. E. G. Hekman, G. J. Verkerke, J. Rouwkema

Summary: Long-term fixation of orthopaedic implants can be enhanced by depositing bioactive bone-like coatings on the implants. This study identified the optimal parameters for depositing osteo-conductive Calcium Phosphate (CaP) coatings on PolyCarbonate-Urethane (PCU) foils. The deposited CaP coatings demonstrated high stability and did not affect cell viability or proliferation, while enhancing cell-mediated calcium deposition. This presents a promising method for integrating PCU implants onto bone.

Effects of heel apex position, apex angle and rocker radius on plantar pressure in the heel region

Athra Malki, Laurens van Kouwenhove, Gijsbertus J. Verkerke, Rienk Dekker, Juha M. Hijmans

Summary: Rocker shoes can reduce the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers but may increase pressure on the heel. This study found that a heel rocker midsole with distal apex position, small rocker radius, and large apex angle can mitigate the negative effects on proximal heel pressure. However, rocker shoes alone cannot effectively reduce pressure in the midheel and distal heel regions. Other footwear options are needed for reducing pressure in these areas.
