To assess if ultrasound (US)-guided viscosupplementation can reduce pain and improve function in elderly patients with cuff tear arthropathy. Ninety-three patients aged over 65 with grade 3 or above cuff tear arthropathy were included in this prospective open-label non-randomized trial. Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained. Thirty-three patients received intra-articular injections of sodium hyaluronate under US guidance. Sixty patients constituted the control group. Shoulder joint function was assessed with Constant scores (CS) and pain with a visual analogue scale (VAS). Compared with controls, treated patients reported a significant decrease in symptoms at 1 (mean CS 66 +/- 3.1 vs 37 +/- 6.9; mean VAS 1.9 +/- 1.2 vs 6.9 +/- 2.2), 2 (mean CS 65 +/- 3.2 vs 35 +/- 7.2; mean VAS 1.7 +/- 1.2 vs 6.8 +/- 2.5), 3 (mean CS 66 +/- 3.4 vs 33 6.1; mean VAS 2.3 +/- 1.2 vs 6.6 +/- 1.9), and 4 (mean CS 62 +/- 3.0 vs 34 +/- 6.5; mean VAS 3.3 +/- 1.4 vs 7.8 +/- 3.1) months, p < 0.001. After 5 months there were no differences. US-guided viscosupplementation is a beneficial therapeutic option in the first months of treatment.

CT-derived relationship between low relative muscle mass and bone damage in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing stem cells transplantation

Alberto Stefano Tagliafico, Federica Rossi, Bianca Bignotti, Lorenzo Torri, Alessandro Bonsignore, Liliana Belgioia, Alida Domineitto

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between muscle mass and bone damage on CT scans in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). It found that patients with low muscle mass had higher levels of bone damage, while patients with normal muscle mass had lower levels of bone damage. Multiple logistic regression analysis did not show any significant relationship with factors such as sex, cytogenetic status, staging, and relapse. However, neither muscle mass nor bone damage significantly correlated with overall survival.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of chronic plantar fasciitis treated with ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and focal ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESW). The results showed that both PRP and ESW were effective in treating plantar fasciitis, but PRP had lower recurrence rate and faster recovery time for athletes.

Artificial Intelligence in Breast Ultrasound: From Diagnosis to Prognosis-A Rapid Review

Nicole Brunetti, Massimo Calabrese, Carlo Martinoli, Alberto Stefano Tagliafico

Summary: This study assessed the current development of ultrasound-based artificial intelligence in breast cancer. The results showed that AI has excellent performance in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategy of breast cancer. However, more prospective and multicenter studies are needed to evaluate the potential impact of AI in breast ultrasound.

Summary: Liquid biopsy has the potential to revolutionize clinical practice by offering a non-invasive approach for cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, the lack of standardized protocols for sample handling has hindered its implementation in clinical settings. This study provides a critical review of available standard operating procedures (SOPs) for liquid biopsy management and presents SOPs developed and utilized in a clinical trial. The aim is to address common issues and promote the adoption of interlaboratory shared protocols for optimized preanalytical handling of blood and urine samples.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of the MammoWave microwave imaging device for breast cancer detection is investigated through a multicentric European clinical trial. The device uses a Huygens-principle-based radar algorithm for image reconstruction and dedicated image analysis software. Conductivity weighted microwave images are created for each breast, and various image parameters are used to quantify their non-homogenous behavior. Welch's t-test is used to verify the statistical significance between the selected image features and the gold standard radiological study review.

Freehand 1.5T MR-Guided Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (MR-VABB): Contribution of Radiomics to the Differentiation of Benign and Malignant Lesions

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the advantages of using radiomics in the assessment of breast lesions amenable to MR-VABB. The results showed that a radiomics logistic regression model applied to DCE-MRI images increased the diagnostic accuracy compared to the standard radiological evaluation. This suggests that radiomics has the potential to reduce the number of biopsies required in suspicious breast lesions, benefiting both patients and healthcare resources.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate pectoralis muscle area (PMA) depletion in breast cancer patients aged 45 years or younger undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and its correlation with clinical and histopathological data. The results showed a decrease in PMA before and after NAC. However, there were no significant associations between PMA changes and other clinical and histopathological data. Therefore, assessing PMA variation on breast MRI during NAC could be a potential tool for monitoring body composition and improving outcomes in young breast cancer patients.

Summary: Despite the use of antibiotics, deep neck infections remain a clinical problem with potential life-threatening complications. Imaging, particularly computed tomography, plays a crucial role in identifying the source, extent, and complications of these infections. Knowledge of neck anatomy allows radiologists to evaluate the spread of infections and communicate important information to surgeons. This review focuses on the imaging of deep neck infections, highlighting relevant anatomy and clinical scenarios to aid in prompt diagnosis and early recognition of complications.
