The study object was to retrospectively compare the detection rate of hypervascular foci visualized by CT during hepatic arteriography (CTHA) in borderline nodules, which was observed upon cirrhotic livers, on dynamic MDCT, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR (dynamic MR), and SPIO-enhanced MR imaging. Eighty-five nodules in 49 patients with cirrhosis were evaluated. When a part of the nodule showed hyperdensity relative to the surrounding areas of the nodule on CTHA, it was defined as hypervascular focus. The relationships between the dynamic MDCT and dynamic MR and SPIO-enhanced MR imaging findings of these foci were analyzed using X(2) test. Hypervascular foci were detected in 17 (53%) of 32 on the arterial dominant phase of dynamic MDCT, in 19 (37%) of 51 on the arterial dominant phase of dynamic MR and in 6 (26%) of 23 on SPIO-enhanced MR imaging. Arterial dominant phase of dynamic MDCT demonstrated a significantly higher detection rate of hypervascular foci less than 5 mm in diameter than did dynamic and SPIO MR imaging (p < 0.05). Hypervascular foci in borderline nodules could be better visualized by dynamic MDCT than by gadolinium- and SPIO-enhanced MR imaging. Dynamic MDCT is recommended for the follow-up examination of hypovascular borderline lesions.

Evaluation of gravity effect on inferior vena cava and abdominal aortic flow using multi-posture MRI

Yoshisuke Kadoya, Tosiaki Miyati, Satoshi Kobayashi, Naoki Ohno, Toshifumi Gabata

Summary: The study found that gravity reduces IVCF and AAF, resulting in decreased velocity of both. Therefore, it is important to consider the effect of gravity on IVCF and AAF when managing patients with circulatory diseases.

The relationship between cadmium exposure and renal volume in inhabitants of a cadmium-polluted area of Japan

Xian Liang Sun, Teruhiko Kido, Hideaki Nakagawa, Muneko Nishijo, Masaru Sakurai, Masao Ishizaki, Yuko Morikawa, Rie Okamoto, Akie Ichimori, Naoki Ohno, Satoshi Kobayashi, Toshiaki Miyati, Kazuhiro Nogawa, Yasushi Suwazono

Summary: A 30-year follow-up study in a cadmium-polluted area of Japan showed fluctuations in urinary cadmium concentrations among men and women. The study revealed that urinary N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase/creatinine (U-NAG/Cr) and serum alkaline phosphatase were sensitive biomarkers for reflecting renal and bone damage caused by cadmium poisoning.

Urinary collecting system invasion on multiphasic CT in renal cell carcinomas: prevalence, characteristics, and clinical significance

Summary: This study found a 3% prevalence of RCC-related CSI, with the tumors pathologically diagnosed as clear cell RCC. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CSI on CT were 50%, 99.7%, and 97.1% respectively. The presence of CSI on CT did not have a significant impact on overall survival and recurrence-free survival rates of patients.

Summary: The study found that the LG2m gene signature is associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and elevated serum LG2m may be a risk factor for HCC development. In chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients who have achieved sustained virological response (SVR), elevated serum LG2m is correlated with a high incidence of HCC.

Summary: The study aimed to calculate the cut-off value of quantitative liver-portal vein contrast ratio (Q-LPC) based on tumour detectability using ROC curves for evaluation of hepatobiliary phase MRI. Results showed that Q-LPC had good sensitivity and specificity in assessing liver contrast on MRI, with the AUC-ROC value at 0.858.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial characteristics of acoustic noise in MRI and investigated the effect of a human-body phantom on the noise. The results showed that the presence of the phantom increased the peak sound pressure levels of the acoustic noise at some positions, while decreasing it at others. The peak frequencies of the acoustic noise were most commonly in the range of 2000-3000 Hz.
