Aims: To provide a review of the available literature about the functional neuroimaging of anorexia nervosa, and to summarize the possible role of neurobiological factors in its pathogenesis. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed and Medline electronic database (1950-September 2009). Eligible studies were restricted to those involving the main parameters of cerebral activity and functional neuroimaging techniques. Findings of the reviewed studies have been grouped on a diagnostic subtype basis, and their comparison has been interpreted in terms of concordance. Results: We found a high level of concordance among available studies with regard to the presence of frontal, parietal and cingulate functional disturbances in both anorexia nervosa restricting and binge/purging subtypes. Concordance among studies conducted regardless of the anorexia nervosa subtypes suggests an alteration in temporal and parietal functions and striatal metabolism. Conclusions: The most consistent alterations in anorexia nervosa cerebral activity seem to involve the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the inferior parietal lobule, the anterior cingulate cortex and the caudate nucleus. They may affect different neural systems such as the frontal visual system, the attention network, the arousal and emotional processing systems, the reward processing network, and the network for the body schema. Summary: In the semantic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (sv-PPA), there are extensive brain metabolic connectivity reorganization and functional alterations, particularly affecting frontal, temporal, and parietal regions. Compared to healthy controls, sv-PPA patients show functional isolation of the left anterior temporal lobe, decreased connections in temporo-occipital regions and contralateral homologous regions, increased connectivity to the dorsal parietal cortex from the spared posterior temporal cortex, and disruption of large-scale limbic brain networks. The severe functional derangement of the left anterior temporal lobe in sv-PPA may lead to extensive connectivity reconfiguration involving multiple brain regions.

Body-Size Perception among First-Generation Chinese Migrants in Italy

Giovanni Castellini, Alessio Pellegrino, Livio Tarchi, Maria Calabrese, Maria Boddi, Valdo Ricca, Gianfranco Costanzo, Pietro Amedeo Modesti

Summary: The study found that first-generation Chinese migrants in Italy had a lower level of body-size perception compared to native Italians. In the Chinese cohort, factors like female gender, BMI, and years spent in Italy contributed to a desire to be thinner, while age showed a negative impact. The study suggests the importance of prevention programs specifically targeted towards men.

Summary: Hypersexual behavior has been broadly studied due to its unclear etiology, nature, and manifestation in relation to organic and psychopathological conditions. This position statement aims to provide evidence that hypersexuality should be considered as a symptom of an underlying condition and to offer specific statements for assessment and diagnosis based on recent literature. The importance of evaluating comorbid psychopathological and organic conditions and considering the impact of pharmacological treatments is emphasized.

Summary: Eigenvector centrality has shown potential in the field of psychiatry, particularly in relation to ADHD. This study explored aberrant connectivity in ADHD using Voxel-Mirrored Homotopic Connectivity (VMHC) and found no differences between diagnostic groups. However, significantly higher eigenvector centrality values were observed in the ADHD group in specific brain regions. The findings suggest that eigenvector centrality may be more relevant to ADHD psychopathology, while VMHC is consistently linked to age.
