Summary: The substituents on cyclopropenes and catalysts have a significant impact on the reactivity and selectivity of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). In this study, different chemoselectivities were observed when using piperidine-appended spirocyclopropenes (SCPs) and various Grubbs catalysts. The conformational difference between the piperidine and azetidine motifs plays a crucial role in determining the reactivity, selectivity, and polymerization pathway. This work provides insights into the mechanism of chemoselective ROMP of spirocyclopropenes using Grubbs catalysts and offers guidance for designing new ROMP reactions.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nickel complexes with sterically demanding ligands can catalyze the cycloaddition oligomerization of 1,6-heptadiynes to selectively produce medium-size cyclic polyenes with narrow molecular dispersity and minimal side reactions. The resulting cyclic polyenes exhibit non-conjugated behavior, while thermally isomerized cyclic polyenes show conjugated behavior. The oligomerization reaction has wide functional group compatibility, allowing for the production of medium-size cyclic polyenes with various functional groups. A plausible reaction mechanism explaining the narrow polydispersity is proposed.

Summary: Ionomers are associative polymers that can form clusters in equilibrium melt, which greatly affect the mechanical, viscoelastic, and transport properties of the system. The size distribution, shape, and stability of these clusters can be controlled by the polymer architecture and the fraction, arrangement, and interaction strength of the ionic groups. Under extensional flows, higher polymer chain-length and fraction of associating groups lead to higher stress and viscosity.

Summary: This study investigates the flow characteristics of a solid and smooth sphere moving steadily along the axis of a cylindrical tube filled with wormlike micellar solutions. Two different constitutive models are used to analyze the rheological behavior, showing that unsteady motion downstream of the sphere occurs when the Weissenberg number exceeds a critical value in the two-species model. However, the single-species Giesekus model predicts a steady flow field. The onset of unsteady motion is delayed as the ratio of sphere to tube diameter decreases, showing qualitative similarity with prior experimental results.

Summary: By combining concepts from polymer and glassy liquid physics, a new model has been constructed to describe the bond-breaking time scale of attractive sticker groups in associating copolymer liquids. The model suggests that the activated event is a two-step process involving the release of dynamic caging constraints and the attractive stickers surmounting a free-energy barrier. This model provides a consistent description for diverse polymer chemistries and architectures, while existing phenomenological models show qualitative failures.

Summary: Numerical simulations are used to uncover the effects of morphological transitions on the steady shear rheology of a dilute suspension of stiff polymers as they tumble in shear flow. The results are in agreement with classic scalings for Brownian rods in relatively weak flows but differ above the buckling threshold, showing enhanced shear thinning and an increase in normal stress differences. The study highlights the subtle role of thermal fluctuations in triggering instabilities, based on past work on rigid Brownian rods and non-Brownian elastic fibers.

Summary: Photopolymerization technology is limited in the fields of food packaging and biomedicine due to the high migration of small molecules from photoinitiators. In this study, a polymerizable 2-vinyl thioxanthone (ETX) was synthesized to improve the migration stability of photoinitiators. Macromolecular photoinitiators (PPI1, PPI2) were also prepared to further reduce migration. The results showed that the ETX/TEOA system had higher initiation performance and PPI2 displayed favorable initiation ability. Additionally, the migration of ETX, PPI1, and PPI2 in photocured film was significantly reduced. These low-migration photoinitiators have potential applications in the fields of food packaging and biological materials.
