The cycloterpolymerizations of N,N-diallyl-(4-octyloxy)benzyl-, N,N-diallyl-(3,5-dioctyloxy) benzyl-, and N,N-diallyl-(3,4,5-trioctyloxy)benzyl-ammonium chloride (0-8 mol%) with hydrophilic monomer N,N-diallyl-N-carboethoxymethylammonium chloride and sulfur dioxide afforded a series of cationic polyelectrolytes (CPE). The CPEs were treated with HCl and NaOH to produce the corresponding pH-responsive cationic acid salts (CAS) and polybetaines (PB), anionic polyelectrolytes (APE) as well as polymers PB/APE containing various proportions of zwitterionic (PB) and anionic fractions (APE) in the polymer chain. Likewise, the cycloterpolymerizations of these single-, twin-, and triple-tailed hydrophobes (0-12 mol%) with hydrophilic monomer diallyldimethylammonium chloride and sulfur dioxide afforded a series of CPE in excellent yields. The polymers were characterized by different techniques including NMR and IR. The solution properties of the series of CPE were investigated by rheological techniques. The studied water soluble polymers showed different theological behavior depending on their structure (hydrophobe type and content) as well as salinity and pH. The high shear thinning and the formation of networks at low shear would likely promote the use of such polymers in enhanced oil recovery applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exploring the reaction pathway involved in the dibenzo-18-crown-6 synthesis from catechol and bis(2-chloroethyl) ether in presence of base

Dilawar Singh Sisodiya, Sk. Musharaf Ali, Anjan Chattopadhyay

Summary: Computational investigations in this work elucidated the mechanism of synthesizing dibenzo-18-crown-6 from catechol and bis(2-chloroethyl) ether in the presence of base. The study identified transition states, tracked side-product formation paths, and analyzed the effect of cation-assisted cyclization on reaction rates. Results showed differences in barrier heights between Na+ and K+ systems, with faster cyclization observed in 1-butanol for the potassium system. Additionally, the dipole moment of the larger alkali metal ion system at the transition state was significantly higher than the reactant species.

Low migration and high performance thioxanthone based photoinitiators

Jingyu Jin, Guoqiang Lu, Jun Nie, Xiaoqun Zhu

Summary: Photopolymerization technology is limited in the fields of food packaging and biomedicine due to the high migration of small molecules from photoinitiators. In this study, a polymerizable 2-vinyl thioxanthone (ETX) was synthesized to improve the migration stability of photoinitiators. Macromolecular photoinitiators (PPI1, PPI2) were also prepared to further reduce migration. The results showed that the ETX/TEOA system had higher initiation performance and PPI2 displayed favorable initiation ability. Additionally, the migration of ETX, PPI1, and PPI2 in photocured film was significantly reduced. These low-migration photoinitiators have potential applications in the fields of food packaging and biological materials.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of high-performance, low-migration photoinitiators. A polymerizable photoinitiator (VBP) was synthesized by introducing an ethylene group into benzophenone, and three different molecular weight single-component photoinitiators (PVBN1-3) were synthesized based on VBP. The results show that these new photoinitiators have stronger absorption ability compared to benzophenone and significantly reduce the migration of initiators and co-initiators, addressing the safety concerns caused by migration.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of plasma treatment on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the structure/properties of polyimide (PI) nanocomposites with ultra-low content of CNTs. The results show that plasma treatment introduces isocyanate groups on the surface of CNTs and enhances the interfacial interaction between PI and treated CNTs. This leads to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, with even a small addition of treated CNTs showing a substantial increase in Young's modulus, tensile strength and toughness.
