Thermal and hydrolytical degradable epoxy coatings based on bis-phenol-A-diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and epsilon-caprolactone (CL) were prepared by photoinitiated cationic polymerization using triphenylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate (Ph3S+SbF6-) as photoinitiator. The photopolymerization kinetics were followed by real-time FT-IR analysis. The effect CL concentration on the rate of polymerization was demonstrated. Mechanical properties of the resulting networks were studied by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Thermal and hydrolytical degradation investigations were also performed. Higher degradability of the cured films with the increasing content of CL in the formulation suggests that UV cured coatings obtained this way can potentially be used as reworkable thermosets. Photoinitiated Cationic Ring-Opening Polymerization of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane

Zehra Gul Coban, Huseyin Cem Kiliclar, Yusuf Yagci

Summary: Photochemical techniques have seen a revival due to their adaptability and ability to produce complex macromolecular structures, although their application in the polymerization of cyclic siloxane monomers has been limited. This study investigated the cationic ring-opening polymerization of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) using diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI) as the initiator. Both direct and indirect initiation systems were examined, using benzophenone and pyrene to generate photochemically induced protonic acids and silylium cations for the polymerization. Kinetics of the polymerization were monitored using viscosimetry and GPC analysis. This approach has potential industrial importance for polysiloxane fabrication due to its ability to overcome challenges associated with conventional methods.

Sustainable approach for coating production: Room temperature curing of diglycidyl furfuryl amine and itaconic acid with UV-induced thiol-ene surface post-functionalization

Lorenzo Pezzana, Giuseppe Melilli, Marco Sangermano, Nicolas Sbirrazzuoli, Nathanael Guigo

Summary: In this work, a diglycidyl furfuryl amine (DGFA) was synthesized to produce a functional coating. A room temperature curing process, using bio-based itaconic acid (IA), was implemented to reduce energy consumption. The curing process was characterized using DSC, rheology, and real-time ATR FTIR, while the thermo-mechanical properties were analyzed using DMTA. Finally, the surface properties of the coating were modified via a UV-induced thiol-ene reaction between itaconic acid moieties and fluorine-based monomers. The surface functionalization was evaluated using contact angle measurements and XPS analysis.

Rossella Sesia, Silvia Spriano, Marco Sangermano, Sara Ferraris

Summary: Corrosion is a significant problem for steel, and research has focused on developing effective corrosion prevention strategies. Commonly used corrosion inhibitors can be harmful, so there is interest in finding natural alternatives. Polyphenols, derived from plants or agricultural by-products, have been investigated for their rust conversion and corrosion prevention properties. This review discusses the use of polyphenols as rust converters, in green anticorrosive coatings, and as active components in corrosion-inhibiting primers. Polyphenolic additives in coatings are also explored as sustainable systems to improve corrosion resistance.

Sathiyaraj Subramaniyan, Matteo Bergoglio, Marco Sangermano, Minna Hakkarainen

Summary: In order to move towards a circular bioeconomy, a paradigm shift from traditional petroleum-based non-recyclable thermosets to biobased repeatedly recyclable materials is required. Two mechanically and chemically recyclable extended vanillin-derived epoxy thermosets were successfully fabricated by introducing Schiff-base/imine covalent dynamic bonds. These thermosets exhibited good thermal and mechanical properties, stability in common organic solvents, and the ability to be thermally reprocessed through compression molding. Furthermore, they could be rapidly and completely chemically recycled to water-soluble aldehydes and amines by imine hydrolysis in 0.1M HCl solution.

Cationic UV-curing of isosorbide-based epoxy coating reinforced with macadamia nut shell powder

Lorenzo Pezzana, Alice Emanuele, Raffaella Sesana, Cristiana Delprete, Eva Malmstrom, Mats Johansson, Marco Sangermano

Summary: The scientific community is actively researching bio-based derivatives to reduce the consumption of fossil-based materials and their environmental impact. Developing bio-based plastics is a significant challenge in achieving sustainability and a green economy. A study focused on using a bio-based monomer, isosorbide, for the production of bio-based resins used in coatings. They successfully functionalized isosorbide to introduce epoxy groups, which were then activated through UV radiation for cross-linking. The bio-based resin showed potential for UV-cationic curing, reaching conversion rates above 85%. Additionally, they added a bio-based filler, macadamia nutshell powder (MAC), to increase the surface hardness of the coating. The resulting coating with 30% MAC showed a significant increase in hardness compared to the pristine bio-based epoxy resin. Thermo-mechanical analysis revealed that the addition of MAC also increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the coating.

Low migration and high performance thioxanthone based photoinitiators

Jingyu Jin, Guoqiang Lu, Jun Nie, Xiaoqun Zhu

Summary: Photopolymerization technology is limited in the fields of food packaging and biomedicine due to the high migration of small molecules from photoinitiators. In this study, a polymerizable 2-vinyl thioxanthone (ETX) was synthesized to improve the migration stability of photoinitiators. Macromolecular photoinitiators (PPI1, PPI2) were also prepared to further reduce migration. The results showed that the ETX/TEOA system had higher initiation performance and PPI2 displayed favorable initiation ability. Additionally, the migration of ETX, PPI1, and PPI2 in photocured film was significantly reduced. These low-migration photoinitiators have potential applications in the fields of food packaging and biological materials.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of high-performance, low-migration photoinitiators. A polymerizable photoinitiator (VBP) was synthesized by introducing an ethylene group into benzophenone, and three different molecular weight single-component photoinitiators (PVBN1-3) were synthesized based on VBP. The results show that these new photoinitiators have stronger absorption ability compared to benzophenone and significantly reduce the migration of initiators and co-initiators, addressing the safety concerns caused by migration.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of plasma treatment on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the structure/properties of polyimide (PI) nanocomposites with ultra-low content of CNTs. The results show that plasma treatment introduces isocyanate groups on the surface of CNTs and enhances the interfacial interaction between PI and treated CNTs. This leads to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, with even a small addition of treated CNTs showing a substantial increase in Young's modulus, tensile strength and toughness.
