Summary: In cancer care, the emphasis on empowering patients to manage their own health has increased due to gaps in support for side-effects from treatments. This study aimed to understand empowerment in relation to self-management in post-treatment cancer patients. Through interviews, empowerment was defined as a process of personal growth and strength, emerging in two dynamic and paradoxical ways: establishing control to maintain normalcy and relinquishing control to accept change. Findings will inform the development of self-management interventions using empowerment as a core concept.

Summary: Base rate neglect refers to the tendency for people to rely on diagnostic information and ignore base rate information when assessing event probabilities. Previous research suggested that using base rate information requires working memory processes, but recent studies challenged this view. This study examines the idea that base rate neglect can be explained by the degree of attention paid to diagnostic information and finds that having more time leads to a decrease in base rate use.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of supposedly haunted natural environments on participants' stress levels and found that believers in the paranormal showed significantly higher levels of stress, suggestibility, and neurasthenia compared to nonbelievers. The findings suggest that paranormal beliefs and attributions can override biological factors in the appraisal processes responsible for sense-of-place, contradicting Stress Reduction Theory.
