Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion causes tissue hypoxia and damage, leading to the pathophysiology of inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of glutamine on the tissue injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion of the gut. Ischemia/reperfusion injury of the intestine was caused by clamping both the superior mesenteric artery and the celiac trunk for 30 min followed by the release of the clamp allowing reperfusion for 1 h. This procedure results in splanchnic artery occlusion-injury. Based on our findings we propose that the amino acid glutamine, administered 15 min before reperfusion at the dose of 1.5 mg/kg, i.v. may be useful in the treatment of various ischemia and reperfusion diseases. The present study was performed in order to determine the pharmacological effects of glutamine ischemia/reperfusion-induced intestinal injury in rats. In particular, to gain a better insight into the mechanism(s) of action of glutamine, we evaluated the following endpoints of the inflammatory response: (1) histological damage; (2) neutrophil infiltration of the reperfused intestine (MPO activity); (3) NF-kappa B activation and cytokines production; (4) expression of ICAM-1 and P-selectin during reperfusion; (5) nitrotyrosine and poly-ADP-ribose formation; (6) pro-inflammatory cytokine production; (7) inducible nitric oxide synthase expression; (8) apoptosis as shown by TUNEL staining and (9) Bax/Bcl-2 expression. Summary: Glycosylation is a significant posttranslational modification in mammalian cells, involved in various biofunctions and diseases. Mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for glycan and glycopeptide isomeric analysis, but its comprehensive characterization remains a challenge. Separation methods and bioinformatic tools are applied to address this challenge.

Summary: This study aims to assess the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) resulting from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Europe and provide an overview of the calculation methods and data sources used. The study found an increasing number of national assessments of NCD burden in Europe, but ambiguity in reporting the use of NCD-specific methods highlights the need for enhanced transparency.

Summary: This study found that regulatory T-cells (Treg) are more abundant in the spleens of patients with splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) compared to reactive spleens. These Tregs can be separated into CD161(+)Treg and CD26(+)Treg subsets. CD161(+)Tregs are increased in SMZL but have dysregulated immune function. CD161(+)Tregs are associated with a favorable prognosis in SMZL, while CD26(+)Tregs are associated with a poor prognosis. Activation of the IL2/STAT5 pathway contributes to the expansion of CD26(+)Tregs and may lead to a poor clinical outcome in SMZL.

Summary: Neurological diseases have a significant impact on millions of people worldwide, and their prevalence is increasing due to global aging. Glycosylation, a post-translational modification, has been found to play a vital role in neurological diseases and can provide novel biomarkers and information for disease pathology. Mass spectrometry is considered the most powerful tool for glycan analysis, and various techniques and strategies have been developed to enhance its identification and quantitation in neurological samples.

Summary: This systematic literature review provides an overview of studies applying the disability-adjusted life years (DALY) concept for infectious diseases in European countries. Among the 105 included studies, food- and water-borne diseases were the most frequently studied. The number of burden of infectious disease studies has increased over time, but there is less consensus in methodological approaches.
