Chiral and achiral push-pull chromophores have been prepared by cascades of sequential [2+2] cycloadditions of tetra-cyanoethene (TCNE) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) to different oligoynes Thermal [2+2] cycloaddition of TCNE to donor-substituted alkynes, followed by electrocyclic ring-opening of the initially formed cyclobutenes, affords donor-substituted 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-dienes (TCBDs) Similarly, TTF reacts with electron-deficient C C bonds to give the corresponding buta-1,3-diene derivatives, 1,2-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)ethanes Thus, achiral [AB]-type oligomers were synthesized from N,N-dialkylanilino (DAA)-substituted letraynes and hexaynes and chiral [AB]-type oligomers from alkyne-substituted 1,1'-binaphthalenes. The [AB]-type oligomers exhibit complex conformational equilibria in solution, as revealed by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy Therefore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the chiral [AB]-type oligomers were measured to investigate whether a preferred conformation of the dendralene-type backbone is induced by the optically active 1,1'-binaphthalene moiety Electrochemical studies by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and rotating-disk voltammetry (RDV) showed large cathodic shifts of the first oxidation potentials for some of the chiral and achiral [AB]-type oligomers clue to sterically enforced pi-deconjugation of the acceptor and donor moieties The new multivalent systems feature Intense, bathochromically shifted intramolecular change-transfer (CT) bands in the UV/Vis spectra Extended, donor-substituted TCBDs, which are obtained by mono-addition of TCNE to the hexaynes, exhibit low optical and electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps In addition, a large third-older optical nonlinearity was measured for one of these TCBDs by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM)

The Appeal of Small Molecules for Practical Nonlinear Optics

Ivan Biaggio

Summary: Research has shown that small organic molecules with a pi-conjugated system equipped with donor and acceptor groups exhibit significantly lower optical excitation energies, leading to higher quantum limits to molecular polarizabilities. Consequently, these molecules demonstrate orders of magnitude larger third-order nonlinear optical polarizabilities compared to molecules of similar size without donor-acceptor substitution. These materials, which can be deposited from the vapor phase and electric-field poled at higher temperatures, offer strong third-order nonlinear optical effects and are competitive for integrating active nonlinear optical or electro-optic functionality into advanced integrated photonics platforms.

Acylation of Hexaphenylbenzene for the Synthesis of [5]Cumulenes

Matthew A. Johnson, Max M. Martin, Kevin Cocq, Norbert Jux, Michael J. Ferguson, Rik R. Tykwinski

Summary: The Friedel-Crafts acylation of hexaphenylbenzene selectively produces monoacylated products. The resulting ketones are used as precursors for the synthesis of [5]cumulenes, with one of the derivatives exhibiting significant stability due to the presence of a sterically demanding group. The rotational barrier for diethynyl[5]cumulenes is estimated using VT NMR studies.

Charge and Spin Delocalization in Mixed-Valent Vinylruthenium-Triarylamine-Conjugates with Planarized Triarylamines

Stefanie Breimaier, Nina Froehlich, Jan Herberger, Michael Linseis, Milan Kivala, Rainer F. Winter

Summary: This article reports on three new vinylruthenium-triaryl-amine (TA) conjugates and presents a detailed study using various spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical calculations. By analyzing the intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions of the mixed-valent radical cations, information on the extent of electronic coupling between chemically different redox sites is obtained. Temperature-dependent spectroscopy reveals the influence of vibrational coupling on the spectral features of these compounds.

Inducing Curvature to Pyracylene upon π-Expansion

John Bergner, Christian Walla, Frank Rominger, Andreas Dreuw, Milan Kivala

Summary: We have achieved a successive alpha-expansion of pyracylene to form boat-shaped polycyclic compounds. The resulting compounds exhibit unique structural features, as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Experimentally and computationally, we observed significant red-shifted absorption bands in the UV/Vis spectra and multiple redox events, indicating a progressive narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap and evolution of the electronic structure and aromaticity.

Self-Assembly of a Triphenylene-Based Electron Donor Molecule on Graphene: Structural and Electronic Properties

Joris de la Rie, Mihaela Enache, Qiankun Wang, Wenbo Lu, Milan Kivala, Meike Stohr

Summary: In this study, the self-assembly behavior of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexamethoxytriphenylene (HAT) molecules on epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) was investigated. It was found that a monolayer of HAT molecules forms a commensurate close-packed hexagonal network on graphene/Ir(111). The weak interaction between HAT molecules and the graphene substrate allows for the formation of a commensurate network.

Electrically poled vapor-deposited organic glasses for integrated electro-optics

Lauren Dallachiesa, Ivan Biaggio

Summary: We present electrically poled small molecule assemblies that can be used as the active electro-optic material in nanoscale guided-wave circuits. These monolithic organic materials can be vacuum-deposited and poled at higher temperatures to create a stable orientational non-centrosymmetric order at room temperature. Using the DDMEBT molecule and corona poling, a material with high optical quality, an effective glass transition temperature of around 80 degrees C, and an electro-optic coefficient of 20 pm/V was demonstrated.

Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation of Trinaphthylamine: Selective Formation of a Nitrogen-Centered Polycyclic π-System Comprising 5-and 7-Membered Rings

Johannes Nebauer, Christian Neiss, Marcel Krug, Alexander Vogel, Dominik Fehn, Shuhei Ozaki, Frank Rominger, Karsten Meyer, Kenji Kamada, Dirk M. Guldi, Andreas Goerling, Milan Kivala

Summary: This article describes a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold synthesized through intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine, which is the first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties, and mechanistic studies suggest the cyclization occurs under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.
