Summary: Metallacyclopentadienes play a vital role in transition-metal mediated and catalyzed cycloaddition reactions of alkynes. In this study, the formal [2+1] cycloadditions of a metallacyclopentadiene unit with a broad scope of commercial alkynes were reported, offering a facile strategy for constructing tetracyclic conjugated compounds. The involvement of a metal vinylidene intermediate in the [2+1] cycloaddition was confirmed through deuterated experiments. Additionally, the electrophilic substitution reaction of the tetracyclic conjugated compound was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculated Fukui functions. These tetracyclic conjugated compounds exhibit broad absorption spectra in the whole visible region, making them potential photovoltaic materials.

Summary: Organic cycles are important in chemistry, pharmacology, and material science due to their unique properties. Thioalkynes have attracted increasing attention as a convenient source for constructing organic cycles. This review highlights the construction of organic cycles from thioalkynes, including the synthesis of 2H-azirines, cyclobutanes, and cyclopentenes. Thioalkynes can also be used to synthesize various other cyclic compounds. The review provides an overview of the methods for accessing organic cycles and presents detailed applications of thioalkynes as synthons for preparing organic cycles, with a focus on different types of organic cycles and their corresponding reaction mechanisms if available.

Summary: In this study, a one-step strategy for synthesizing cyclobutene-annulated fullerene derivatives (cyclobutenofullerenes) was developed and their electronic properties were characterized. Despite steric strain, cyclobutenofullerenes can be easily prepared through a one-step reaction of C-60 with a secondary propargylic phosphate. Structural analysis of reaction intermediates suggests that the cascade reaction proceeds through a formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition of C-60 with an allene, caused by the 1,3-migration of the propargylic phosphate, followed by an additional 1,3-migration and subsequent 1,2-elimination of the phosphodiester moiety.

Summary: The construction of all-carbon quaternary centers in small-ring systems is an important yet challenging task in organic synthesis. In this study, we developed a practical method for building all-carbon quaternary centers in gem-difluorinated cyclopropanes (DFCs) by utilizing gem-difluorocyclopropyl bromides (DFCBs) as general and versatile building blocks. The reaction involves the participation of a gem-difluorocyclopropyl radical intermediate, which undergoes coupling with a wide range of nucleophiles under copper catalysis.

Summary: A new method for the synthesis of 1-pyrrolines with high regio- and diastereoselectivity has been explored using N-alkenylnitrones and alkynes, with mechanistic studies providing insight into the balance of steric and electronic effects that control the product preferences. This cascade reaction demonstrates the divergent synthetic utility of the new method through diastereoselective derivatization of the 1-pyrrolines prepared.

Summary: Research has shown that small organic molecules with a pi-conjugated system equipped with donor and acceptor groups exhibit significantly lower optical excitation energies, leading to higher quantum limits to molecular polarizabilities. Consequently, these molecules demonstrate orders of magnitude larger third-order nonlinear optical polarizabilities compared to molecules of similar size without donor-acceptor substitution. These materials, which can be deposited from the vapor phase and electric-field poled at higher temperatures, offer strong third-order nonlinear optical effects and are competitive for integrating active nonlinear optical or electro-optic functionality into advanced integrated photonics platforms.

Summary: We have achieved a successive alpha-expansion of pyracylene to form boat-shaped polycyclic compounds. The resulting compounds exhibit unique structural features, as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Experimentally and computationally, we observed significant red-shifted absorption bands in the UV/Vis spectra and multiple redox events, indicating a progressive narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap and evolution of the electronic structure and aromaticity.

Summary: In this study, the self-assembly behavior of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexamethoxytriphenylene (HAT) molecules on epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) was investigated. It was found that a monolayer of HAT molecules forms a commensurate close-packed hexagonal network on graphene/Ir(111). The weak interaction between HAT molecules and the graphene substrate allows for the formation of a commensurate network.
