Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between diet and oral and pharyngeal cancer risk, and estimated the number of preventable cases under different levels of adherence to the dietary guidelines. The findings showed that a higher adherence to the guidelines was associated with a lower risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer, and a significant proportion of cases could be prevented by improving adherence to the guidelines.

Summary: Obesity-mediated inflammation is a key link between the consumption of high inflammatory potential foods and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. The study aimed to explore the association between energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and CRC risk in both obese and non-obese individuals. The results showed that pro-inflammatory diets were associated with an increased incidence of CRC in the Malaysian population, particularly in obese subjects.

Summary: The study found no significant differences in sugar exposure, deft, and DMFT between children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although oral hygiene practices were better in children with ASD, their OHI-S scores were worse. Children with ASD reported significantly more mouth-breathing, bruxism, and self-injurious habits.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the possible associations between different dietary patterns in the Lebanese population and COVID-19 occurrence and outcomes. Results showed that despite similar dietary patterns, the case group had lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet, with higher poultry consumption, decreased olive oil intake, increased red meat and alcohol intake. Gender also influenced food consumption levels, but overall dietary intake did not impact COVID-19 burden.

Summary: Retrospective dietary recalls were conducted to investigate the association between maternal consumption of diet sodas/beverages (DSB) and aspartame during pregnancy/breastfeeding and the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results showed that gestational/early-life exposure to diet soda or aspartame significantly increased the risk of autism in males, while no significant associations were found in females.

Summary: A study in Malaysia found that the processed diet pattern, characterized by a high intake of confectionaries and fast foods, was associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Further research is needed to understand the impact of different dietary patterns on the gut microbiota associated with colorectal cancer, in order to develop prevention measures through lifestyle changes.

Summary: This study predicts cancer mortality figures for 2023 in the European Union, its five most populous countries, and the UK, with a focus on lung cancer. The results show that the decline in lung cancer mortality reflects advancements in tobacco control, and further efforts are needed to control overweight and obesity, alcohol consumption, infection, and related neoplasms, as well as improve screening, early diagnosis, and treatments. These efforts may achieve a 35% reduction in cancer mortality in the EU by 2035.

Summary: This study found that gastric cancer mortality rates have been declining globally since 1990, with variations between countries and regions. It is predicted that gastric cancer mortality rates will continue to decline in most countries, except for certain demographics in France, the US, and Canada. The proportion of cardia and noncardia gastric cancer also varies across different regions.

Summary: This study estimated the number of cancers attributable to occupational carcinogens in Italy. By using a counterfactual scenario of no exposure and considering latency, the study calculated the attributable fraction of cancer. The most prevalent occupational carcinogens were found to be UV radiation, diesel exhaust, wood dust, and silica dust. The study highlighted the substantial burden of occupational cancers in Italy and the importance of surveillance of carcinogens in the workplace.

Summary: This review found that high maternal weight, primiparity, and early weight gain were associated with an increased risk of early breast onset/development, while preterm birth was associated with late breast onset/development. Results were inconsistent for smoking in pregnancy, maternal hypertensive disorders, breastfeeding, diabetes, and small for gestational age. No association was found for maternal age at delivery, alcohol drinking, and selected drug use during pregnancy, and low birth weight. This highlights the importance of studying the interconnections between pre/postnatal environmental exposures and their impact on puberty.

Summary: Lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in drug consumption among Italian adults. Cannabis use decreased during lockdown, particularly among adults aged 55-74, but increased among those aged 18-34. In 2022, cannabis use was more common among men, younger adults, individuals with low or high education levels, those from certain regions, and those with above-average economic status. The study also found associations between cannabis use and smoking, e-cigarette and heated tobacco product use, risky alcohol consumption, gambling, anxiety and depression, psychotropic drug use, low quality of life, and limited sleep.
