Background Diet diversity has been recommended to achieve a healthy diet and prevent cancer. Aim of the study The relation between diet diversity (i.e., variety in food intake computed as the total number of foods consumed at least once per week) and the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer was investigated using data from a multicentric case-control study carried out between 1991 and 2005 in Italy. Methods Cases were 805 patients with histologically confirmed incident cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, and controls were 2,081 patients admitted for acute, non-neoplastic diseases, unrelated to tobacco or alcohol consumption. Results A significant inverse association was observed with total diet diversity. The multivariate odds ratio (OR), adjusted for education, tobacco and alcohol, was 0.78 (95% confidence interval, CI 0.61-0.98) for subjects in the highest tertile of diversity. Inverse relations were found also for diversity within vegetables (OR = 0.62; 95% CI 0.49-0.78) and fruits (OR = 0.67; 95% CI 0.53-0.86). Conclusions This study suggests that a more diversified, and particularly a diet varied in vegetables and fruit, is a favourable indicator of oral and pharyngeal cancer risk, independently from the major recognised risk factors, i.e. alcohol and tobacco consumption.

Association of prebiotic fiber intake with colorectal cancer risk: the PrebiotiCa study

Federica Turati, Federica Concina, Marta Rossi, Federica Fiori, Maria Parpinel, Martina Taborelli, Attilio Giacosa, Anna Crispo, Eleonora Pagan, Valentina Rosato, Eva Negri, Carlo La Vecchia

Summary: This study found an inverse association between the intake of galactooligosaccharides (GOSs) and colorectal cancer risk. No association was found with total inulin-type fructans (ITFs) and fructooligosaccharides (FOSs).

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between canned fish consumption and the risk of upper digestive tract cancers. The findings suggest that canned fish may have a beneficial role in reducing the risk of oral cavity and pharynx cancer and gastric cancer, but not esophageal cancer.

European cancer mortality predictions for the year 2023 with focus on lung cancer

Summary: This study predicts cancer mortality figures for 2023 in the European Union, its five most populous countries, and the UK, with a focus on lung cancer. The results show that the decline in lung cancer mortality reflects advancements in tobacco control, and further efforts are needed to control overweight and obesity, alcohol consumption, infection, and related neoplasms, as well as improve screening, early diagnosis, and treatments. These efforts may achieve a 35% reduction in cancer mortality in the EU by 2035.

Trends in gastric cancer mortality 1990-2019 in 36 countries worldwide, with predictions to 2025, and incidence, overall and by subtype

Summary: This study found that gastric cancer mortality rates have been declining globally since 1990, with variations between countries and regions. It is predicted that gastric cancer mortality rates will continue to decline in most countries, except for certain demographics in France, the US, and Canada. The proportion of cardia and noncardia gastric cancer also varies across different regions.

Attributable Fraction of Cancer Related to Occupational Exposure in Italy

Giulia Collatuzzo, Federica Turati, Matteo Malvezzi, Eva Negri, Carlo La Vecchia, Paolo Boffetta

Summary: This study estimated the number of cancers attributable to occupational carcinogens in Italy. By using a counterfactual scenario of no exposure and considering latency, the study calculated the attributable fraction of cancer. The most prevalent occupational carcinogens were found to be UV radiation, diesel exhaust, wood dust, and silica dust. The study highlighted the substantial burden of occupational cancers in Italy and the importance of surveillance of carcinogens in the workplace.

Summary: In this study, early PCI was not found to be independently associated with improved prognosis in NSTE-ACS patients, regardless of the presence of CKD. However, there was a trend towards improved outcomes in patients with preserved renal function.

A systematic review on maternal and perinatal factors influencing breast development

Michela Dalmartello, Francesca Chiaffarino, Giovanna Esposito, Sonia Cipriani, Elena Ricci, Carlo La Vecchia, Fabio Parazzini, Luca Persani, Eva Negri

Summary: This review found that high maternal weight, primiparity, and early weight gain were associated with an increased risk of early breast onset/development, while preterm birth was associated with late breast onset/development. Results were inconsistent for smoking in pregnancy, maternal hypertensive disorders, breastfeeding, diabetes, and small for gestational age. No association was found for maternal age at delivery, alcohol drinking, and selected drug use during pregnancy, and low birth weight. This highlights the importance of studying the interconnections between pre/postnatal environmental exposures and their impact on puberty.

Summary: Despite the strong evidence of increased severity and mortality risk in smokers with COVID-19, the impact of current and ex-smokers on disease progression remains uncertain. Cannabis use in repeated representative cross-sectional studies on Italian adults after the COVID-19 pandemic

Andrea Amerio, Chiara Stival, Cristina Bosetti, Giulia Carreras, Tiziana Fanucchi, Giuseppe Gorini, Alessandra Lugo, Roberta Pacifici, Gianluca Serafini, Anna Odone, Silvano Gallus

Summary: Lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in drug consumption among Italian adults. Cannabis use decreased during lockdown, particularly among adults aged 55-74, but increased among those aged 18-34. In 2022, cannabis use was more common among men, younger adults, individuals with low or high education levels, those from certain regions, and those with above-average economic status. The study also found associations between cannabis use and smoking, e-cigarette and heated tobacco product use, risky alcohol consumption, gambling, anxiety and depression, psychotropic drug use, low quality of life, and limited sleep.
