Epoxides are of central importance in organic synthesis since they provide access to a series of different 1,2-difunctionalized intermediates starting from cheap olefins. Olefin epoxidation is catalyzed by a whole bunch of transition metal elements in high oxidation states, the most important are molybdenum, tungsten, rhenium and manganese. Organic peroxides, hydrogen peroxide bleach and even dioxygen have been used as the source of the oxygen atom that is transferred to the olefin. The present microreview summarizes the recent developments in terms of catalyst heterogenization for olefin epoxidation. Such strategies are requested for green synthesis protocols and are of special interest for expensive catalysts derived, e. g. from rhenium or complex chiral ligands.

Triazolyl Conjugated (Oligo)Phenothiazines Building Blocks for Hybrid Materials-Synthesis and Electronic Properties

Hilla Khelwati, Adam W. Franz, Zhou Zhou, Werner R. Thiel, Thomas J. J. Mueller

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient method for preparing conjugated triazolyl-substituted (oligo)phenothiazine organosilicon derivatives with luminescence and reversible redox characteristics using Cu-catalyzed alkyne-azide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition variant was demonstrated. Additionally, mesoporous MCM-41 type silica hybrid materials with embedded (oligo)phenothiazines were prepared by in-situ co-condensation synthesis and characterized for their structural and electronic properties. The hybrid materials were also shown to be able to be oxidized to covalently bound embedded radical cations, identified by their UV/Vis absorption signature and EPR signals.

Fast and Selective Aqueous-Phase Oxidation of Styrene to Acetophenone Using a Mesoporous Janus-Type Palladium Catalyst

Summary: By selectively modifying the surface of hollow mesoporous silica material, a heterogeneous Janus-type palladium interphase catalyst was obtained, showing exceptional activity for the aqueous-phase oxidation of styrene to acetophenone. The catalyst demonstrated an 88% yield of acetophenone after 60 minutes of reaction.
