Impact of a model of care for heart failure in-patients to reduce variation in care: a quality improvement project

Ingrid Hopper, Kellie Easton, Illona Bader, James Campbell, Lucy Busija, Peter Markey, Peter Bergin, David Kaye

Summary: By designing a HF care model and implementing best practice guidelines, the readmission rates of patients can be reduced, and nursing outcomes improved. Results assessed using interrupted time series analysis showed significant improvements in 30- and 90-day readmissions, while emergency department representations, mortality, and length of stay remained unchanged. This care model will be adapted with the introduction of electronic medical records at the institution.

Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Depressive Symptoms and Antidepressant Use in Young Australian Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

Rakibul M. Islam, Lucy Marsh, Robin J. Bell, Marina A. Skiba, Susan R. Davis

Summary: The prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptoms among young Australian women is concerning, with housing insecurity being a significant risk factor. The use of psychotropic medication is common, with factors such as age, parity, and ethnicity playing a role in antidepressant use.

Differing performance of two assays for the measurement of anti-Mullerian hormone in premenopausal women: A cross-sectional study

Robin J. Bell, Marina A. Skiba, Ken Sikaris, Angela Liu, Rakibul M. Islam, Susan R. Davis

Summary: The study compared two commercially available AMH assays and found that despite a high correlation, the assays performed differently at high and low concentrations. Therefore, the results of these assays are not interchangeable, emphasizing the importance of establishing specific reference values for individual assays to guide clinical decision-making and the challenge of establishing future universal cutoffs for the application of AMH levels in clinical practice.

Use of community-based reference ranges to estimate the prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome by the recognised diagnostic criteria, a cross-sectional study

Summary: Despite applying stringent criteria for the diagnosis of PCOS in a non-healthcare seeking community-based sample, there remains a risk of diagnostic uncertainty in identifying women with PCOS.

Identification of Predictive Factors for Patient-Reported Outcomes in the Prospective Australian Breast Device Registry

Jessy Hansen, Susannah Ahern, Pragya Gartoulla, Ying Khu, Elisabeth Elder, Colin Moore, Gillian Farrell, Ingrid Hopper, Arul Earnest

Summary: This study developed risk-adjustment models for benchmarking patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in breast device procedures. The models help accurately track device outcomes and identify outliers in an equitable manner.

Final opinion on the safety of breast implants in relation to anaplastic large cell lymphoma: Report of the scientific committee on health, emerging and environmental risks (SCHEER)

Wim H. De Jong, Demosthenes Panagiotakos, Ana Proykova, Theodoros Samaras, Mark W. Clemens, Daphne De Jong, Ingrid Hopper, Hinne A. Rakhorst, Fabio Santanelli di Pompeo, Suzanne D. Turner

Summary: The SCHEER was requested to provide a scientific opinion on the safety of breast implants in relation to ALCL by the EC. Different surface textures of breast implants may present different risks, but the causality between textured breast implants and BIA-ALCL is considered moderate. New cases reported by national clinical registries are crucial for estimating the risk of BIA-ALCL.

Impact of Late Referral on Cardiac Transplant Outcomes

Elizabeth Suo, Ingrid Hopper, Su Ling Tee, Hitesh C. Patel, David M. Kaye

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of late referral for heart transplantation on outcomes. Late referral was defined as the presence of four or more out of 10 criteria for more than 6 months in heart transplantation patients. Patients who were referred late were more unwell at the time of referral and incurred greater in-hospital costs.

Exploring staff perspectives on caring for isolated hospitalised patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study

Robin Digby, Ingrid Hopper, Leanne Hughes, Doug McCaskie, Michelle Tuck, Kethly Fallon, Peter Hunter, Tracey Bucknall

Summary: This study aimed to understand staff perceptions and interpretations of their experiences of the care and treatment of isolated patients and the impact of isolation on patients, families, and staff. It found that isolating patients and restricting visitors resulted in good pandemic management, but came at considerable cost to staff and consumers. Appropriate interventions are needed to improve care.
