Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis are able to form biofilms on virtually any biomaterial implanted in a human host. Biofilms are a primary cause of mortality in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients, as they cause recurrent and invasive candidiasis, which is difficult to eradicate. This is due to the fact that the biofilm cells show high resistance to antifungal treatments and the host defense mechanisms, and exhibit an excellent ability to adhere to biomaterials. Elucidation of the mechanisms of antifungal resistance in Candida biofilms is of unquestionable importance; therefore, this review analyzes both the chemical composition of biomaterials used to fabricate the medical devices, as well as the Candida genes and proteins that confer drug resistance.

A GDPase/UDPase bifunctional enzyme from Candida albicans: purification and biochemical characterization

Jaime A. Bibian-Garcia, Jorge A. Ortiz-Ramirez, Lilia M. Almanza-Villegas, R. Aguayo-Ortiz, C. Cano-Canchola, Mayra Cuellar-Cruz, Everardo Lopez-Romero

Summary: Candida albicans is a common fungal pathogen in humans, particularly in immunocompromised patients. This study investigates the mechanisms of glycoprotein assembly in the organism and identifies a bifunctional nucleotidase that plays a role in maintaining the balance of sugar donors during the glycosylation process.

Proteomic Analysis of Sporothrix schenckii Exposed to Oxidative Stress Induced by Hydrogen Peroxide

Dulce O. Saucedo-Campa, Ana L. Martinez-Rocha, Emmanuel Rios-Castro, Carlos A. Alba-Fierro, Miguel A. Escobedo-Bretado, Mayra Cuellar-Cruz, Estela Ruiz-Baca

Summary: Sporothrix schenckii modulates the expression of its cell wall proteins in response to reactive oxygen species, allowing it to evade the immune system. In this study, the proteomic analysis showed that several cell wall proteins and antioxidant enzymes were differentially expressed after exposure to an oxidizing agent. RT-qPCR assays confirmed that the transcription of these genes is regulated in response to oxidative stress. The findings suggest that S. schenckii utilizes cell wall proteins, including moonlighting proteins, to protect against oxidative stress and infect host cells.

Identification of Secondary Metabolites from Mexican Plants with Antifungal Activity against Pathogenic Candida Species

Summary: Invasive fungal infections caused by Candida species have become a significant public health problem in the last three decades. The difficulty in diagnosing and treating candidiasis has led to the development of drug resistance and toxicity in patients. This study investigates the antifungal activity of plants used in traditional Mexican herbal medicine against Candida species and identifies several active compounds that could serve as alternative treatments.

The Effect of DNA from Escherichia Coli at High and Low CO2 Concentrations on the Shape and Form of Crystal-line Silica-Carbonates of Barium (II)

Cesia D. Perez-Aguilar, Selene R. Islas, Abel Moreno, Mayra Cuellar-Cruz

Summary: The synthesis of nucleic acids in the Precambrian era marked the start of life, with DNA being the molecule in which the genetic information has been conserved ever since. After studying the DNA of different organisms, researchers have found that DNA concentration and environmental conditions influence cell size and cellular differentiation. This research aims to evaluate the influence of DNA concentration on the morphology of biomorphs under different synthesis conditions.

Summary: The origin of life on Earth is associated with the Precambrian era, and this study explores the possibility of calcium, barium, and strontium biomorphs protecting and preserving biomolecules in a simulated atmosphere of the Precambrian era. Results showed for the first time the formation of the kerogen signal and the internalization of DNA into the structure of biomorphs.

Summary: This report presents an economic analysis of large-scale production of chemically cross-linked collagen scaffold (CCLCS) using waste from the meat industry. The study demonstrates that producing CCLCS can be cost-effective and profitable in the Mexican market. This has the potential to stimulate the circular bioeconomy.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the role of different light-signaling proteins in biochemical processes, especially in plants, and their applications in optogenetics as a new research field. Case studies are presented, demonstrating the use of fluorescent proteins and phototropins in the synthesis of biomorphs. The article also analyzes the influence of these proteins on the shape and structure of silico-carbonates, serving as optical sensors for the detection of biomolecules.

New Insights on the Origin of Life: The Role of Silico-Carbonates of Ba (II) to Preserve DNA against Highly Intense UV Radiation

Mayra Cuellar-Cruz

Summary: There are many theories about the origin of life, but currently it is believed that life has a single origin, although the starting point has not been determined. In order to understand the mechanism of life origin on Earth, it is necessary to unify the different theories. This study proposes a hypothesis based on biomorphs, which are silica-carbonates of alkaline earth metals, to unify the various theories on the origin of life.

Silica-carbonate biomorphs of alkaline earth metals: Relationship with minerals since the Precambrian era

Marcelino Antonio Zuniga-Estrada, Erick Alfredo Zuniga-Estrada, Mayra Cuellar-Cruz

Summary: Under alkaline conditions, self-assembled mineral compounds similar to ancient biominerals can form from silica. This review explores a geochemical scenario in the early history of Earth that could have led to the production of organic compounds important for prebiotic chemistry. The scenario involves a high concentration of silica, high pH, a source of simple carbon molecules, and the formation of self-organized silica-metal mineral compounds that catalyzed the condensation of single molecules in a methane-rich atmosphere. The plausibility of this scenario and its transition towards a slightly alkaline to Neutral Ocean are discussed.
