The aim of this study was to assess elite women's basketball game performance. Five elite women's games (3 Italian first division and 2 Euroleague) were analyzed for individual and team time-motion analyses. The individual analysis evaluated the players' movement patterns with particular focus on high-intensity activity (HIA), sprint activity, and repeated sprint events (RSEs). Team analysis included live time (LT), stoppage time (ST), and their ratio, transfer (TR) phases, and half court and full court actions. The frequency of occurrence of changes of activities was n = 576 +/- 110, one every 2.56 seconds of LT. Total HIA was 8.5 +/- 1.8% of LT and no significant differences between quarter periods were observed. In general, players performed linear sprints (48.3 +/- 2.9%) over 1-5 m distance (56.8 +/- 5.6%). The occurrence of RSE was 4.4 +/- 1.7, with 58.6 +/- 18.5% passive recovery between sprints. Team analysis showed no significant difference between games for LT and ST phases (ratio = 1.18 +/- 0.25). For game analysis, LT and ST were 43.4 +/- 7.8% and 51.1 +/- 8.4%, respectively. A difference between games was found for half court actions (p < 0.01) and TR phases (p <= 0.05). Moreover, 1 TR and 2 TR were the most performed (45.3 and 23.9%) actions. These results encourage coaches to include repeated sprint ability with mainly linear and short sprints into a comprehensive training program.

Physical Demands of Elite Male and Female 3 x 3 International Basketball Matches

Davide Ferioli, Daniele Conte, Diego Rucco, Pedro E. Alcaraz, Alejandro Vaquera, Marco Romagnoli, Ermanno Rampinini

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the physical demands of 3x3 basketball games and assess the differences between male and female players. An observational design was used to analyze video footage from the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, resulting in 216 individual game samples. The results showed that there were differences in the intermittent physical demands between male and female players, with females performing more low-intensity and high-intensity activities per minute. During ball possession, males spent more time on low-intensity activities, while females displayed more high-intensity activities and a higher percentage of playing time at high intensity. The findings suggest the need for sex-specific training sessions based on the specific match demands.

Injury incidence and risk factors in youth soccer players: a systematic literature review. Part II: Intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors

Mauro Mandorino, Antonio J. Figueiredo, Masar Gjaka, Antonio Tessitore

Summary: The objective of this study was to review the risk factors for injury in young soccer players. After searching electronic databases, articles meeting the inclusion criteria were selected for review. Risk factor data were extracted and grouped into intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The main findings include the importance of neuromuscular control, the impact of maturation status, the contribution of fatigue and poor recovery to overuse injuries, the unclear role of anthropometric factors, the increased risk associated with previous injuries and high skill levels, the influence of external workloads, and the greater injury risk from playing position and sport specialization in young soccer players. Understanding the complex interaction between these factors is crucial for identifying high-risk players, developing effective prevention strategies, and taking a holistic approach.

Summary: This study aimed to assess and compare the physiological, hormonal, psychological, and physical responses of recreational 3 x 3 basketball (3 x 3BB) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in active young adults. The results showed that 3 x 3BB elicited higher maximal heart rate percentage, physical activity intensities, enjoyment, and lower perceived exertion compared to HIIT. Therefore, 3 x 3 basketball may be considered as a potentially suitable activity to improve the health status of participants.

An ecological investigation of average and peak external load intensities of basketball skills and game-based training drills

Pierpaolo Sansone, Lorenzo Gasperi, Bojan Makivic, Miguel Angel Gomez-Ruano, Antonio Tessitore, Daniele Conte

Summary: This study quantified the average and peak external intensities of various basketball training drills. It found that the type of drill influenced the average and peak external load, with different directions of effects. Involvement percentage and court area per player also had an impact on the external load. However, playing position and competition rotation status did not show significant effects. The findings suggest that practitioners should consider different load indicators separately when designing basketball training programs.

Injury incidence and risk factors in youth soccer players: a systematic literature review. Part I: epidemiological analysis

Mauro Mandorino, Antonio J. Figueiredo, Masar Gjaka, Antonio Tessitore

Summary: The analysis of epidemiological data and injury risk factors in young soccer players is crucial for promoting prevention strategies. This study conducted a systematic literature review on the epidemiological data and injury risk factors. The findings include higher injury incidence in older players and during matches, a higher risk of injury for males and more ligament sprains for females, and ankle and thigh injuries for young males and ankle and knee injuries for females. Coaches and trainers should consider individual differences and promote personalized training and prevention strategies.

Comparative Effectiveness of Active Recovery and Static Stretching During Post-Exercise Recovery in Elite Youth Basketball

Marco Pernigoni, Julio Calleja-Gonzalez, Inga Lukonaitiene, Antonio Tessitore, Jurate Stanislovaitiene, Paulius Kamarauskas, Daniele Conte

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of active recovery (AR) and static stretching (SS) in post-exercise recovery of basketball players. The results showed no significant differences between the two interventions at corresponding time points. However, the recovery process differed, as the SS group had lower jump height at post-recovery, and the AR group had impaired heart rate variability and perceived recovery. Overall, neither strategy seemed to significantly improve post-exercise recovery.
