Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of transitional care interventions on healthcare utilization after hospitalization for heart failure. The results showed a reduction in all-cause and HF-specific readmissions, but not in ED visits. Multidisciplinary interventions were found to be most effective in reducing HF readmissions, with an inverse linear dose-response relationship between intervention intensity and complexity with HF readmission risk.

Summary: This study aimed to develop quality indicators for transitional care after hospitalization for heart failure. Through a systematic review of clinical trials, the researchers generated a list of process indicators, structure indicators, patient-reported indicators, and clinical indicators that can be used to guide clinical practice and research.

Summary: The outcomes of large-volume IVF administration to septic shock patients with comorbid congestive heart failure and/or end-stage renal disease are uncertain and widely debated. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that administration of greater than or equal to 30 ml/kg IVF to these patients was associated with a non-significant increase in odds of mortality, but there was a trend toward better outcomes in some other measures.

Summary: Transitional care interventions have been proven effective in reducing mortality and improving quality of life for individuals with heart failure, with greater efficacy seen in trials delivered by multidisciplinary teams. However, the effects on emotional distress are inconclusive, highlighting the need for further research.

Summary: This study evaluated maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnancies among women with congenital heart disease (CHD) in the modern era, finding that pregnancy in women with CHD typically has a successful outcome in both mother and child. However, as maternal CHD severity increases, the risk of numerous morbidities and neonatal mortality also increases. These findings may be helpful in counseling women with CHD, especially those with severe lesions, who plan to become pregnant.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluated the effects of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in patients with refractory congestive heart failure (RCHF). The study included 20 observational studies and found that PD can improve cardiac function, reduce length of hospitalisation, but has no significant impact on renal function. Although the results are limited, further randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the indications, utilization patterns, and outcomes of V-AV ECMO by analyzing existing evidence. The majority of cases were transitioned to V-AV ECMO from other ECMO configurations, with a small proportion directly placed on V-AV ECMO. The average hospital stay was 42.3 days, and ICU mortality was 46%. Some patients successfully transitioned to durable left ventricular assist devices or underwent heart transplantation. In conclusion, V-AV ECMO is a viable option for optimizing cardiopulmonary support in selected patients, with comparable survival rates to more common ECMO configurations.

Summary: The study aimed to assess sex differences in the efficacy and safety of baroreflex activation therapy in heart failure patients. Women had poorer baseline quality of life than men but showed similar improvements with therapy. Women had a significant improvement in NT-proBNP levels, while men did not.

Summary: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, with complications including heart failure, thromboembolic events, arrhythmias, and death. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze data on the complications and outcomes of women with PPCM from 2000 to June 2021.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effects of discontinuing renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitor medication on the clinical outcomes of patients. It will include a systematic review and analysis of relevant randomized controlled trials to assess the impact of discontinuing RAS inhibitors on primary outcomes such as death, cardiovascular disease, and blood pressure.

Summary: Most studies indicate that telemonitoring has no significant effects on healthcare utilization measures, except for an increase in nonemergency outpatient department visits. The consequences of telemonitoring on nonemergency outpatient visits should be given more attention by regulators, payers, and providers. This review highlights the high clinical and methodological heterogeneity of telemonitoring programs, which should be considered in future meta-analyses aiming to identify the effective components of telemonitoring programs.

Summary: Chronic heart failure has a negative impact on both physical and mental dimensions, leading to comorbid depression and anxiety and reduced quality of life. This meta-review aims to synthesize the outcomes of psychosocial interventions for heart failure based on systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The results show some short-term benefit of psychosocial interventions in reducing depression and anxiety and improving quality of life, but long-term effects are poorly studied. Further research is needed to explore the gaps in current evidence and incorporate clinical outcomes and measures of stress processes.
