Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.

Summary: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a serious ocular fibrotic disease that can lead to blindness. This study focuses on the pathogenesis of PVR and the mechanism behind the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. The results show that the loss of E-cadherin leads to changes in the catenin-cadherin complex, activating zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) and promoting the upregulation of N-cadherin. Overexpression of E-cadherin inhibits the EMT process and cell proliferation in RPE cells.

Summary: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), released by neutrophils, have been found in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues and are associated with disease progression. This study used high-resolution microscopy to detect citrullinated NETs in colon cancer tissues and found that citrullinated NETs were significantly associated with high tumour grades and lymph node metastasis. In vitro experiments also showed that purified NETs induced filopodia formation and cell motility in CRC cell lines, indicating their potential contribution to CRC metastasis.

Summary: Cell phenotype heterogeneity within tumor tissue, especially due to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), plays a role in cancer invasion and metastasis. In this study, heterotypic tumor spheroids containing both epithelial and EMT cancer cells were generated and it was found that EMT cells dominated the periphery of the spheroid. Furthermore, EMT cells acted as leader cells to enhance the migration efficiency of epithelial cancer cells and promote dispersion and invasion of the spheroids through force transition and heterophilic N-cadherin/E-cadherin adhesion complexes. Impairment of this adhesion complex formation prevented EMT cells from guiding epithelial cancer cell migration and blocked the dispersion of tumor spheroids.

Summary: Epithelial/mesenchymal (E/M) plasticity is important in both embryogenesis and tumorigenesis. The role of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is unclear. This study shows that RAGE signaling maintains the mesenchymal phenotype of aggressive TNBC cells through the expression of SNAIL1 and its crosstalk with the TGF-β pathway. RAGE inhibition promotes epithelial features and reduces migration and invasion capacities. In vivo inhibition of RAGE reduces metastasis incidence and improves survival.

Summary: Cytokine dynamics in respiratory specimens of COVID-19 patients were studied in this retrospective case-control study. The study found that levels of MPO, ADA, CCL22, TNF alpha, and IL-6 mRNA were significantly higher in infected patients compared to controls, with ADA showing better performance. Additionally, severe COVID-19 patients had lower CCL22 mRNA levels. ADA may be a better biomarker for differentiating between infected and uninfected patients, while CCL22 has potential in stratifying the severity of COVID-19.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disease that is increasing worldwide, and it is associated with colorectal polyps. This study aimed to investigate the potential of serum microRNAs (miRNAs) in identifying NAFLD in colorectal polyp patients. The results showed that a serum miRNA panel composed of four miRNA pairs significantly identified NAFLD in colorectal polyp patients, and its performance improved when patients with other concurrent metabolic disorders were removed from the analysis. The serum miRNA panel could be a potential diagnostic biomarker for screening NAFLD in colorectal polyp patients for early diagnosis and prevention of disease progression.

The results showed that there was an increased risk of ischaemic stroke or systemic embolism in female patients with AF after receiving the first dose of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac. However, the risk was even higher after COVID-19 infection.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on the immunogenicity of the BNT162b2 vaccine against wild-type and variant strains of SARS-CoV-2, as well as infection outcome. The results showed that NAFLD patients who received two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine had good immunogenicity against wild-type and delta variant strains, but poor immunogenicity against the omicron variant, and they were not at a higher risk of infection compared to the control group.

Interferon treatment was associated with a modest increase in anti-thyroid antibody titres. Thyroid function and anti-thyroid antibodies did not play a significant role in long COVID.

Summary: This study evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of sentinel-lymph-node mapping compared to systematic lymphadenectomy in detecting lymph node metastasis in early stage ovarian cancer.
