Summary: Carnosine and anserine are abundant peptides in vertebrate skeletal muscle and nervous system. Exogenous carnosine improves exercise performance and acts as an antioxidant and antifatigue supplement. This study investigated the physiological roles of endogenous carnosine by analyzing carnosine synthase gene-deficient mice. The findings suggest that carnosine deficiency affects weight maintenance and protein metabolism in skeletal muscle.
