Summary: The research found that individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder (SSDs) experience higher levels of physical and social anhedonia compared to controls. Depressive symptom severity influences the differences in physical anhedonia, while age moderates the differences between social and physical anhedonia in the SSD group.

Summary: This study investigated the association between BDNF polymorphisms and depression and schizophrenia. The results showed that BDNF rs962369 was significantly associated with an increased risk of single-episode major depression disorder (MDD) and recurrent MDD, but not with schizophrenia. The frequency of the minor allele C of BDNF rs962369 varied across different subgroups, with the highest frequency in patients with recurrent MDD and the lowest in schizophrenia patients.

Summary: Although creative occupations are associated with an increased genetic risk for various psychiatric disorders, religious, helping, and teaching professions also have similar or even greater elevations in risk. This association is stronger for internalizing disorders rather than psychotic disorders.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of major depressive episode (MDE) in first episode and drug naive (FEDN) schizophrenia patients was high at 49.30%, with factors such as male gender, smoking, psychopathology, and early age of onset being associated with MDE. Demographic and clinical variables were also found to be correlated with the severity of depression in these schizophrenia patients.

Summary: The study found that cilia genes play an important role in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, with dysfunction potentially contributing to multiple disorders. Notably, cilia GPCRs genes and transition zone proteins were particularly affected in schizophrenia. This research provides new insights into the pathophysiology of these disorders.

Summary: The cognitive effects of tobacco use among women with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression have not been extensively studied. However, a study found that female tobacco users in these groups demonstrated poorer cognitive functioning and smoking may exacerbate cognitive dysfunction associated with major mental illnesses among women.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the abnormalities in the hippocampus and subfields in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that SCZ patients had volume reductions in multiple subfields, and the reductions were more significant in the left molecular layer, dentate gyrus, CA2/3, and CA4 compared to the MDD group. The composite analyses demonstrated smaller hippocampal volumes in the SCZ group compared to healthy controls in all bilateral measures, and reduced volumes compared to the MDD group in left measures only.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment effects of different medications for patients with schizophrenia and major depressive disorder using a mouse model. The results showed that ECS + venlafaxine + mirtazapine had significant effects in alleviating major depressive disorder, as reflected by brain Ca2+ activity and behavioral assay performance. Clozapine + venlafaxine + mirtazapine did not have an ideal treatment effect.

Summary: Schizophrenia and affective disorder are complex mental disorders with high heritability. Rare variants contribute to the genetic liability of these two disorders. Whole genome sequencing analysis identified multiple rare inherited variants in two families, providing evidence that these variants may contribute to the heritability of psychiatric disorders.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of comorbid major depressive disorder in schizophrenia patients, with factors like publication year, study size, assessment tools, comorbid conditions, demographics, hospitalizations, and antidepressant use influencing the prevalence rate. Further research is needed to explore other potential factors contributing to the high prevalence of SZ-MDD.

Summary: The study found that bipolar disorder is associated with simultaneous activation of the immune-inflammatory response system and the compensatory immune-regulatory system, which may be related to the staging of the illness. Immune injuries and HCMV infection in BD patients contribute to dysfunctional CIRS and exaggerated IRS responses, playing a key role in inflammation and neuroaffective toxicity.

Summary: The study found that NfL levels were significantly higher in the MDD group compared to the healthy norm population, while no significant increase was observed in the SZ group, and there was no correlation between NfL and inflammatory markers. In the DSST test, a negative correlation was observed between NfL values and cognitive performance in patients with MDD.

Summary: The reciprocal associations between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and immune-inflammatory pathways are explored in this review, shedding light on the involvement of BDNF in the immune pathophysiology of mood disorders and schizophrenia. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network centered around BDNF and its interactions with neurotrophic, immune, and cell-cell junction proteins are delineated. BDNF participates in the immune response and may have a protective role against neurotoxicity caused by immune activation and hyperinflammation through its interactions with neuroprotective and cell-cell adhesion proteins.

Summary: This study compared the prediagnostic clinical characteristics of individuals with DLB, PD, and AD, and found that falls, psychiatric symptoms, and autonomic dysfunctions were more strongly associated with DLB than PD and AD in the 5 years preceding the first neurodegenerative diagnosis. Additionally, the use of statins was less common in PD patients but more common in DLB and AD patients.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the clinical factors and biomarkers associated with the development of anxiety in newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, as well as to predict the risk factors for increasing anxiety levels over time. The results showed that anxiety development is related to non-dopaminergic or extrastriatal pathology rather than a dopaminergic deficit in the basal ganglia. Early dysexecutive function predicts the development of anxiety, and an increase in anxiety levels correlates most strongly with global cognitive decline.

Summary: This study analyzed whether prescriptions of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are significantly associated with an increased incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) in the German population. The results showed that diagnoses of epilepsy, restless legs syndrome, and neuropathy, as well as the prescription of AEDs including sodium valproate, gabapentin, and pregabalin, were significantly associated with an increased incidence of PD. Further studies are needed to confirm the present results.

Summary: Anxiety is a common and important non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), yet it is poorly understood, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. This study aimed to explore the experience of anxiety for people with Parkinson's (PWP) through interviews and thematic analysis. The findings revealed the complexity of anxiety, its impact on daily life, and the connection to PD. The study highlights the need for better recognition and treatment of anxiety in PWP.

Summary: Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) poses complex challenges for clinical management and healthcare interactions. The support needs of both PD patients and caregivers are often unmet, with inconsistent diagnostic pathways and poor awareness of cognitive impairment in PD. Clinicians should adapt their approach and provide tailored information and support, while services should be more streamlined and collaborative. Wider awareness and understanding of this condition and its differences from other types of dementia are needed.
