Summary: Oral mucositis is a common adverse effect in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation therapy. This study aimed to investigate the associations between the severity of oral mucositis and clinical outcomes and quality of life. The results showed that severe oral mucositis was associated with feeding tube placement, hospitalization, opiate use, and weight loss.

Summary: Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide, with the predominant risk factors being tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and oncogenic viruses. Treatment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach with surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy, and is challenging due to site-specific and histology-specific variations.

Summary: This study investigated the degree of perceived fatigue in individuals treated for head and neck cancer (HNCa). Results showed that more than half of the participants reported clinically significant levels of fatigue. There was an inverse relationship between fatigue and overall health-related quality of life, suggesting that as fatigue increases, perceived HRQOL decreases.

Summary: Electrochemotherapy, based on reversible electroporation and intracellular accumulation of hydrophilic drug molecules, is considered an effective and safe treatment for tumors, including mucosal cancer of the head and neck. Limited experience with ECT in mucosal HNC due to poor accessibility of tumors highlights the need for further research to confirm its potential as a treatment option in selected patients.

Summary: This study found that the use of once-every-3-weeks cisplatin with radiation did not have a negative impact on the quality of life for patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LAHNSCC), compared to once-a-week cisplatin. However, there were significant differences in the scales of constipation, reduced sexuality, and financial difficulty between the two treatment arms.

Summary: Head and neck cancer treatment can have negative impact on health-related quality of life and treatment efficacy. Exercise training may bring benefits to these patients. This study aimed to analyze the acute effects of treatment on patients and their preferences for exercise training. The findings suggest that an exercise training program can improve the physical fitness of patients and reduce toxicities.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of semi-automatic QOL-weighted NTCP-guided VMAT treatment plan optimization in head and neck cancer patients and compared it to conventional treatment. Results showed that QOL-weighted NTCP-guided VMAT plans were clinically acceptable, prioritizing sparing of organs at risk related to high-impact toxicities, leading to an improvement in predicted QOL compared to conventional VMAT plans.

Summary: The addition of nimotuzumab to cisplatin based chemoradiation in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma improved progression-free, locoregional, and disease-free survival without negatively impacting quality of life. Most function and symptom scales of QoL showed significant changes over time, but no significant difference was observed between the two treatment arms.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis and treatment on patient and partner perceived intimacy, as well as whether a diagnosis of HPV-related head and neck squamous cell carcinoma affects patient-partner intimacy. The results showed that patient and partner intimacy levels remained stable or improved throughout the study, and there was generally agreement between couples in their levels of perceived intimacy. A diagnosis of HPV did not significantly affect intimacy scores.

Summary: This qualitative study explores the experiences of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients in communicating with health professionals. The loss of speech capacity is found to be distressing and traumatic for survivors of HNC. Tensions arise in the communication between patients and health professionals, including abrupt, hurried communication versus slower, more mindful communication. Disparities in health literacy levels and a lack of empathy are also observed.

Summary: The study found that Oncokompas is most effective in improving HRQOL in cancer survivors with lower self-efficacy, higher personal control, and higher health literacy. It also showed that survivors with heavier tumor-specific symptoms, such as head and neck cancer and colorectal cancer survivors, benefited more from Oncokompas in symptom reduction.

Summary: This paper describes a Raman spectroscopy setup capable of recording high-quality Raman spectra from tissue containing near-infrared exogenous fluorescent agents by avoiding spectral overlap. The optimal wavelength interval (900-915 nm) for Raman excitation is identified to avoid both excitation of fluorescent dyes and Raman signal self-absorption by the tissue. This combined novel setup could pave the way for clinical trials benefiting from both fluorescence imaging and Raman spectroscopy to avoid positive margins in cancer surgery.
