Summary: Future progress in wheat grain yield relies on enhancing photosynthesis capacity and biomass, and wheat wild relatives provide new genetic variation for photosynthesis traits. This study aims to quantify the variation in leaf photosynthesis traits, biomass, and grain yield in a diverse panel of germplasm under well-watered and drought conditions.

Summary: The tolerance of Triticum aestivum to mesosulfuron-methyl is higher than that of A. tauschii. The absorption and metabolism of mesosulfuron-methyl are different between the two species. The cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor, malathion, increases the sensitivity of T. aestivum to mesosulfuron-methyl.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic basis of resistance against Fusarium head blight and the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol in Aegilops tauschii, the diploid progenitor of the wheat D subgenome. By analyzing a panel of Ae. tauschii accessions, a uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucosyltransferase (UGT) gene on chromosome 5D was identified as the causal variant for susceptibility to the mycotoxin. This UGT gene was also found to be involved in DON detoxification in hexaploid wheat. The findings highlight the conservation of this resistance mechanism in wheat and barley.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of chromosome variations on wheat evolution using synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW). Analysis of SHW lines using chromosome FISH and SNP marker clustering reveals non-random chromosome variations, indicating the occurrence of similar variations in the early stages of wheat polyploidization and their important role in wheat evolution.

Summary: The diversity of wheat products is largely influenced by the origin of hexaploid bread wheat, which improved dough properties in leavened breads by incorporating the D-genome of Aegilops tauschii. Despite the genetic bottleneck caused by polyploidization, Ae. tauschii remains a valuable resource for unique Glu-D1 alleles, potentially enhancing end-use quality improvement in wheat breeding programs. Through genomic analysis, researchers have identified novel Glu-D1 gene alleles in Ae. tauschii, suggesting a promising reservoir for generating higher quality wheat varieties.

Summary: Aegilops tauschii, the D-genome donor of bread wheat, is a genetic resource with a large diversity of morpho-physiological traits and adaptations to a wide ecological range. Through genome-wide association studies, markers or genes associated with morpho-physiological traits were identified, revealing differences in genetic diversity between different lineages, which are valuable for wheat breeding.

Summary: Triticum aestivum and Aegilops tauschii have different tillering responses to the auxin herbicide 2,4-D isooctyl ester, with differential expression of genes involved in plant hormone metabolism and signal transduction pathways. Abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (CTK) levels are implicated in the differences in tillering response regulated by 2,4-D isooctyl ester between the two species.

Summary: The study reveals that T. aestivum is more sensitive to 2,4-D isooctyl ester compared to A. tauschii, potentially due to differences in leaf surface properties. T. aestivum showed significantly higher uptake of 2,4-D isooctyl ester than A. tauschii over the experimental period, leading to greater accumulation of the herbicide's primary metabolite in plants. Additionally, T. aestivum exhibited higher expression levels of the auxin receptor transport inhibitor response (TIR1) gene compared to A. tauschii, indicating potential differences in herbicide sensitivity mechanisms between the two species.

Summary: This study evaluated the resistance to Fusarium crown rot (FCR) in a collection of 286 A. tauschii accessions and identified five accessions with moderate resistance. Genome-wide association mapping revealed multiple significant SNPs on chromosomes 2D and 7D associated with FCR resistance. The resistance loci were independent of flowering time, heading date, and plant height. Six candidate genes encoding disease resistance-related proteins were selected for further validation.

Summary: This study investigated the content of carotenoids and tocols in different genotypes of wheat species and found that Triticum durum had the highest carotenoid content, while Triticum dicoccum had a lower tocols content compared to other species. There were positive correlations between tocols and 13/gamma tocotrienols, and different genotypes from the same species were grouped into different clusters.

Summary: This study identified the gene regulation network of Aegilops tauschii in response to abscisic acid (ABA) stress and found key genes associated with wheat drought tolerance, flowering process, and grain quality. These findings provide valuable information for exploring the molecular functions of regulatory genes and will assist in wheat breeding.

Summary: This study reveals the shade avoidance strategy of Ae. tauschii by elongating stems and leaves in response to shading stress. However, this strategy leads to the sacrifice of growth in other parts, such as a reduction in tiller number. Additionally, the study identifies genes involved in cell division and expansion that are downregulated under shading stress and genes related to cell enlargement, signal transduction, and energy supply that are upregulated.
