Multi-scale physics mechanisms and spontaneous edge transport bifurcations in fusion plasmas

The magnitude of radial transport in magnetic confinement devices for controlled nuclear fusion suffers spontaneous bifurcations when specific system parameter values are exceeded. Here we show, for the first time, that the correlation length of the plasma potential becomes of the order of the machine size during the edge bifurcation itself, quite unlike the density fluctuations. The mechanism governing the development of this bifurcation, leading to the establishment of an edge transport barrier, is still one of the main scientific conundrums facing the magnetic fusion community after more than twenty years of intense research. The results presented here show the dominant role of long-range correlations when approaching the Low to High confinement edge transition in fusion plasmas. This is in line with the expectation that multi-scale interactions are a crucial ingredient of complex dynamics in many non-equilibrium systems. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

Summary: This article reports on TJ-II stellarator research, including modelling and validation of plasma flow asymmetries, plasma fuelling physics, control and stability of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs), the interplay between turbulence and neoclassical mechanisms, and liquid metal behavior. Experimental validation of neoclassically predicted potential asymmetries impacting the radial electric field has been achieved. Research indicates that turbulence and fluctuations are strongly affected during particle injection processes. Advanced analysis tools show that radial electric fields not only affect turbulence correlation length but also reduce turbulence propagation from the edge to the scrape-off layer.

Summary: We present recent highlights from the most advanced stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X. The operation phases have shown stable detachment, low impurity content, and excellent energy confinement times. The use of pellet fueling has reduced turbulence and improved overall confinement. The research provides evidence that magnetic field optimization can successfully reduce neoclassical transport.

Rational surfaces, flows and radial structure in the TJ-II stellarator

Summary: In this study, we measured turbulent quantities inside the plasma edge in the TJ-II stellarator using a Langmuir probe during rotational transform scans. We found that the poloidal plasma velocity and radial electric field have a radial structure that relates to the rotational transform profile and lowest order rational surfaces. The particle flux and flow shear suppression term also exhibit a radial pattern, but their relation to the low-order rational surfaces is less clear. The results suggest the presence of an unknown term, the instability growth rate, in the turbulence evolution equation.

Summary: The formation of the radial electric field in the scrape-off layer (SOL) in stellarator W7-X was experimentally studied. Simple models developed in tokamaks were tested for their validity in a complex 3D island divertor. The formation of the electric field follows a similar pattern to tokamaks, and the gradient of the electric field at the edge is linked to a reduction in density fluctuations.

H-mode transition in the TJ-II stellarator plasmas

Summary: Since the first H-mode transitions were observed in TJ-II plasmas in 2008, extensive experimental efforts have been made to understand the physics of confinement transitions better. This article presents an overview of the main findings related to the L-H transition in TJ-II, including the driving mechanism of the radial electric field, the possible mechanisms for turbulence suppression, and the temporal and spatial scales that can impact the transition. Experimental evidence supports the role of zonal flows in mediating the L-H transition and suggests other mechanisms beyond local sheared flows for turbulence suppression at the transition.

Summary: The required heating power for accessing the H-mode in tritium containing plasmas was investigated under specific conditions. It was found that the heating power threshold varied for different isotope compositions, indicating that the effective isotope mass alone is not sufficient to describe the isotope effect. The electron temperature profiles were similar for all isotopes and mixtures, despite the significant variation in the power threshold.

Enhanced confinement induced by pellet injection in the stellarator TJ-II

Summary: Enhanced confinement is observed in neutral beam injector (NBI)-heated hydrogen discharges in the stellarator TJ-II after the injection of a single cryogenic fuel pellet into the plasma core. The plasma's diamagnetic energy content and the energy confinement time are increased compared to similar discharges without pellet injection (PI). Moreover, the triple product n(e) center dot T-i center dot tau(E)diag exhibits a clear bifurcation point toward improved confinement.

The effect of pellet injection on turbulent transport in TJ-II

Summary: The improvement in confinement associated with the injection of pellets has been observed in TJ-II and other devices. A simple model is used to study the modification of turbulent transport by pellet injection and its effect on particle confinement time. The analysis of the results shows the relationship between the confinement improvement and the evolution of shear flow due to turbulence, particularly near low order rational surfaces.
