Summary: Chiral polyimine macrocycles are a new family of organic macrocycles that have defined cavities, rigid shapes, inherent chirality, and multiple cooperative binding sites, and show great potential in diverse areas. However, their application in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for enantioseparation is rarely reported. In this study, a novel chiral stationary phase (CSP) for HPLC was prepared by chemically bonding a chiral polyimine macrocycle onto thiolated silica. The CSP exhibited good enantioselectivity in both normal- and reversed-phase HPLC, and showed broader chiral resolution compared to a previously studied chiral macrocycle-based column. It also showed complementary enantioseparation to other popular chiral HPLC columns and demonstrated good stability and reproducibility.

Summary: In this study, vancomycin-immobilized CSP (V-CSP) and derivatized vancomycin-immobilized CSP (D-V-CSP) were prepared and their separation abilities for chiral drugs were investigated. The results showed that changing the structure of the stationary phase can improve the chiral recognition ability for different chiral drugs.

Summary: This paper proposes a design approach using mixed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as tunable stationary phases in liquid chromatography (LC). By systematically designing ligands, the pore sizes in the MOFs can be tuned. Columns packed with the MOFs and their mixed-particle/solid-solution stationary phases are prepared and tested for the retention capability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in LC. The results demonstrate that mixed-linker solid-solution MOFs have higher retention capability compared to pure MOF stationary phases, due to their specific nanostructures.

Summary: Two stationary phases, Sil-styrene and Sil-PAS, were synthesized using click chemistry. The prepared columns showed better separation effects compared with traditional commercial columns in reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction separation modes. The amino groups on the benzene ring were found to affect the hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions with analytes, and the Sil-styrene column showed great potential for the separation of PAHs in actual samples.

Summary: Surface modification of materials is an effective technique to enhance their properties. In this study, Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) was successfully grafted onto silica surface to form Sil-TPE, which exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and superhydrophobic properties. Sil-TPE also showed excellent separation performance in liquid chromatography, making it a promising stationary phase material.

Summary: Efficient detection of environmental organic pollutants is a hot topic in chromatographic analysis. In this study, a novel chromatographic stationary phase was prepared by introducing aminopropylimidazole to adjust the hydrophobicity of the alkyl group. Waste aminopropyl silica gel was recycled and activated to serve as the raw material. A one-pot reaction of the activated silica gel with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane, dodecyltrimethoxysilane, and 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole was conducted to synthesize the aminopropylimidazole/dodecyl dual-functionalized silica stationary phase (Sil-API-DD). The Sil-API-DD exhibited effective separation of various environmental organic pollutants in reversed-phase chromatography, with flexible selectivity and superior separation efficiency compared to commercial C18 column.

Summary: A polyethyleneimine-functionalized polymer substrate polar stationary phase was prepared for hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) by grafting PEI onto PS-DVB microspheres. The phase exhibited a U-shape retention profile and typical hydrophilic characteristics when the organic solvent fraction in the mobile phase was above 60%. The retention mechanism involved hydrogen bonding, anion exchange, and hydrophobic interaction, and good separation and unique selectivity for acidic, basic, and neutral polar analytes were achieved. The phase showed extremely low column bleed, comparable to that of the blank, under gradient elution mode and had a wide pH tolerance range of at least 1-13.

Summary: This study synthesized a mixed-mode stationary phase for chromatographic separation by decorating silica microspheres with two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) nanosheets and ionic liquids. The prepared column exhibited enhanced chromatographic separation performance for partially hydrophilic compounds and showed excellent repeatability and stability. The composites could be easily prepared and have potential applications in liquid chromatography.

Summary: Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) modified silica spheres were utilized to graft butyric acid and octanoic acid onto their surfaces, forming two stationary phases named Sil-PEI-BAD and Sil-PEI-CAD, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the successful synthesis of these two stationary phase materials. The chromatographic performance of the stationary phases was evaluated using hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds as analytes, demonstrating the effectiveness of Sil-PEI-BAD for hydrophilic compounds and Sil-PEI-CAD for hydrophobic substances.
