Organic corrosion inhibitors (OCIs), including ultraviolet light filters, are widely used in plastics, rubbers, colorants, and coatings to increase the performance of products Derivatives of benzotriazole (BTR), benzothiazole (BTH), and benzophenone (BP) are high-production volume OCIs that have been detected in the environment and human tissues. However, knowledge of their occurrence in indoor environments, as well as human exposure to them, is still lacking. In this study, BTR, BTH, BP and their 12 derivatives were determined in indoor dust for the first time All three groups of OCIs were found in all 158 indoor dust samples from the U.S. and three East Asian countries (China, Japan, and Korea). The geometric mean (GM) concentration of the sum of six BTRs (GM C-Sigma BTRs) ranged from 20 to 90 ng/g among the four countries studied, with a maximum C-Sigma BTRs of similar to 2000 ng/g found in a dust sample from China. Tolyltriazole was the major derivative of BTR measured in dust. GM C-Sigma BTHs in indoor dust from the four countries ranged from 600 to 2000 ng/g. 2-OH-BTH was the predominant BTH in dust from the U.S., Japan, and Korea. GM C-Sigma BPs in dust ranged from 80 to 600 ng/g, with 2-OH-4-MeO-BP and 2,4-2OH-BP, contributing to the majority of Sigma BP concentrations. Based on the concentrations of three types of OCIs in indoor dust, human exposure through dust ingestion was calculated. Daily intake of OCIs through dust ingestion was higher for people in the U.S., Japan, and Korea than in China; the residents in urban China are exposed to higher levels of OCIs via dust ingestion than are those in rural China.

Elevated levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress and renal injury linked to nitrogenous flame retardants exposure in e-waste dismantling site: A case study in China

Yumeng Shi, Shucong Chen, Mengqi Yan, Zhipeng Cheng, Leicheng Zhao, Yarui Liu, Bo Zhang, Hongkai Zhu, Tao Zhang, Kurunthachalam Kannan

Summary: Nitrogenous flame retardants (NFRs) have raised global concern due to their nephrotoxic effect, but the mechanism of exposure-induced kidney injury remains unknown. This study measured eight NFRs, four oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs), and one kidney injury biomarker (NGAL) in urine samples collected from residents in e-waste disassembly and reference areas. Higher concentrations of NFRs and biomarkers were found in the urine of e-waste site residents, indicating that chronic exposure to NFRs can induce oxidative stress and kidney damage. Structure equation modeling revealed that oxidative stress mediated a significant portion of the effect of NFRs on NGAL in e-waste related people. Overall, this study suggests the long-term chronic exposure to NFRs can lead to oxidative stress and renal injury in humans, but the pathogenesis may be scenario-specific.

Infantile Internal and External Exposure to Neonicotinoid Insecticides: A Comparison of Levels across Various Sources

Henglin Zhang, You Wang, Huimin Zhu, Shaoyou Lu, Yu Wang, Jingchuan Xue, Tao Zhang, Kurunthachalam Kannan, Hongwen Sun

Summary: This study investigated the exposure of infants in South China to neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). The results showed that infants had detectable levels of NEOs in urine and blood samples, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. The concentrations of specific NEOs varied in different samples, with dinotefuran and imidacloprid being the most abundant in urine, blood, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. Older infants had higher NEO exposure than younger infants. Blood samples had higher concentrations of NEOs compared to urine samples, indicating that NEOs readily enter the bloodstream. Breast-fed infants had higher exposure levels than formula-fed infants. The study also found that external sources contributed to the majority of NEO exposure in infants.

The decomposition and emission factors of a wide range of PFAS in diverse, contaminated organic waste fractions undergoing dry pyrolysis

Erlend Sormo, Gabriela Castro, Michel Hubert, Viktoria Licul-Kucera, Marjorie Quintanilla, Alexandros G. Asimakopoulos, Gerard Cornelissen, Hans Peter H. Arp

Summary: The current treatment options for organic waste contaminated with PFAS include incineration, composting, and landfilling, all of which result in emissions. Dry pyrolysis is a promising alternative, but the fate of PFAS during this process is uncertain. This study developed a robust method for determining PFAS in complex matrices and established a mass balance for 56 different PFAS during full-scale pyrolysis of various wastes. PFAS were present in all wastes but were removed by at least 96.9% through pyrolysis. Residual PFAS were detected in biochars obtained at temperatures up to 750 degrees C, with emissions consisting mainly of short chain PFAS.
