Air samples were concurrently collected using high volume air samplers for 24 h every week from September 2008 to August 2009 at 15 sites (11 urban, 1 suburban, and 3 background/rural) across China. Twelve polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners (BDE-17, -28, -47, -66, -85, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183, and -209) were measured. Total PBDE concentrations (Sigma 12PBDEs) in air (gas + particle phases) were in the range of 11.0-838 pg m(-3) with a mean of 232 +/- 72 (mean +/- SE) pg m(-3). The site with the highest concentration was Guangzhou (838 +/- 126 pg m-3), followed by Beijing (781 +/- 107 pg m(-3)). Significant positive correlations were found between PBDEs levels and urban population (R = 0.69, P < 0.05) and gross industrial output values (R = 0.87, P < 0.001) as well. BDE-209 was the dominating congener with the contribution of 64 +/- 23% to Sigma 12PBDEs, followed by BDE-47(8 +/- 8%) and -99(6 +/- 5%) at all urban and suburban sites. At background/rural sites, however, BDE-47 was the dominating congener, followed by BDE-99, together accounting for 52 +/- 21% of Sigma 12PBDEs, while BDE-209 was only 11 +/- 2%. It was found that PBDEs at the 15 sites showed a primary distribution and fractionation pattern. This study produced more than 700 pairs of air samples in gaseous and particulate phases with a wide temperature range of similar to 60 degrees C, providing a good opportunity to investigate gas-particle partitioning for individual PBDE congeners. The results of gas-particle partitioning analysis for PBDEs using both subcooled-liquid-vapor pressure (P-L)-based and octanol-air partition coefficient (K-OA)-based models indicated that PBDEs in air at all sampling sites had not reached equilibrium because the slope values (m(O)) in the K-OA-based equation and the opposite slope values (m(p)) in the P-L-based equation at all 15 sampling sites were less than 1. It also found that both m(o) and -m(p) were significantly and positively correlated with the annual average temperatures of sampling sites and also significantly and negatively correlated with the mole masses of PBDE congeners, indicating a general trend that the higher the temperature at the sampling site and the lower the mole mass of the PBDE congeners are, the closer to the equilibrium the congeners approach and vice versa. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the correlations of the slope values for both the K-OA-based and P-L-based equations with temperatures at sampling sites and mole masses for individual PBDE congeners.

An intelligent reflecting surfaces based iterative PhC-MIMO system for atmospheric optical channels

Yuequan Wang, Xiaolin Zhou, Yaoyang Wu, Han Wang, Yifan Li, Pengfei Tian, Sirui Xiu

Summary: This paper proposes an iterative photon counting nonorthogonal multiple access-multiple-input-multiple-output (NOMA-MIMO) system based on optical intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). The channel fading coefficient matrix of the NOMA-MIMO system is constructed by analyzing the geometric and misalignment losses under turbulence effect in the optical IRS-based atmospheric channel. A novel iterative parallel interference cancellation algorithm based on logarithmic likelihood ratio is developed for signal detection at the receiver. The reliability of the proposed system is proved through simulation of bit error rate (BER), with a BER performance of 2 x 10-5 at -165 dBJ per bit for the scenario of 3x5 MIMO system. Additionally, the numerical results indicate that the proposed system has a rapid convergence performance in the external information transfer process.

Summary: The white matter of the brain in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is susceptible to neurodegenerative processes, resulting in microstructural lesions. Specifically, abnormalities were found in specific portions of the right superior longitudinal fasciculus, right arcuate fasciculus, left anterior thalamic radiation, and forceps major. These abnormalities may be associated with insulin and glucose status as well as blood pressure.

Size-resolved environmentally persistent free radicals in cold region atmosphere: Implications for inhalation exposure risk

Shi-Ming Jia, De-Qi Wang, Li-Yan Liu, Zi-Feng Zhang, Wan-Li Ma

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the distribution of environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in different size particles and evaluated the inhalation exposure risk. The results showed that the concentration of EPFRs was higher during heating season compared to non-heating season. The contribution of EPFRs in PM>10 to the total concentration of EPFRs cannot be neglected, particularly during non-heating season. The study also indicated a higher inhalation exposure risk for 3-4-year-old children.

Seasonal variations of airborne phthalates and novel non-phthalate plasticizers in a test residence in cold regions: Effects of temperature, humidity, total suspended particulate matter, and sources

Chun-Yan Huo, Wen-Long Li, Li-Yan Liu, Yu Sun, Jia-Qi Guo, Liang Wang, Hayley Hung, Yi-Fan Li

Summary: Some phthalate esters (PAEs), commonly used in consumer products, have been restricted due to their adverse health effects, leading to the emergence of alternative non-phthalate plasticizers (NPPs). This study investigated the presence of PAEs and NPPs in the air of a typical indoor residence in northern China for over a year. It was found that PAEs were still the dominant plasticizers being used, with higher concentrations compared to NPPs. The concentrations of PAEs and NPPs showed seasonal variation, with peak levels occurring in summer and autumn.

Modeling historical budget for β-Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) in the Arctic Ocean: A contrast to α-HCH

Pu-Fei Yang, Robie W. Macdonald, Hayley Hung, Derek C. G. Muir, Roland Kallenborn, Anatoly N. Nikolaev, Wan-Li Ma, Li-Yan Liu, Yi-Fan Li

Summary: Using a mass balance box model, the historical loading, removal, and cumulative burden of b-hexa-chlorocyclohexane (b-HCH) in the Arctic Ocean from 1945 to 2020 were investigated. The majority of the loading occurred through ocean currents and river inflow, while atmospheric transport contributed only a small portion. b-HCH accumulated in the Arctic Ocean starting in the late 1940s, reached a peak in 1986, and decreased by 2020. The pathways of b-HCH entering the Arctic differed from those of a-HCH, with b-HCH primarily transported through long-range oceanic transport.

Light-Induced Dynamic Restructuring of Cu Active Sites on TiO2 for Low-Temperature H2 Production from Methanol and Water

Shunqin Luo, Hui Song, Fumihiko Ichihara, Mitsutake Oshikiri, Wenning Lu, Dai-Ming Tang, Sijie Li, Yunxiang Li, Yifan Li, Philo Davin, Tetsuya Kako, Huiwen Lin, Jinhua Ye

Summary: In this study, a light activation strategy was demonstrated to regulate the dynamic restructuring of Cu active sites in a TiO2-supported Cu catalyst during low-temperature methanol steam reforming. The thermally deactivated Cu/TiO2 underwent structural restoration from Cu2O to metallic Cu under illumination, leading to significantly enhanced activity and stability. The optimized Cu/TiO2 exhibited a high H-2 production rate under low-intensity solar irradiation, outperforming conventional photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes. The results suggest the feasibility of real-time functionalization of catalysts through the strong light-matter-reactant interaction.
