Ageing society in developed countries challenges carbon mitigation

Heran Zheng, Yin Long, Richard Wood, Daniel Moran, Zhengkai Zhang, Jing Meng, Kuishuang Feng, Edgar Hertwich, Dabo Guan

Summary: The consumption of senior citizens in developed countries has a significant impact on global carbon mitigation, but this impact is not well understood. Research shows that seniors have been increasing their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions over the past decade and are expected to become the largest contributors. In particular, seniors in the United States and Australia have a carbon footprint double the Western average. Changes in expenditure patterns of seniors are the main cause of this trend. While the increasing carbon footprint of seniors may drive domestic production, its effects on international carbon leakage are limited. This demographic change presents more challenges in local mitigation and calls for deeper public mitigation efforts.

City-level emission peak and drivers in China

Yuli Shan, Yuru Guan, Ye Hang, Heran Zheng, Yanxian Li, Dabo Guan, Jiashuo Li, Ya Zhou, Li Li, Klaus Hubacek

Summary: China's increasing role in global climate change mitigation is highlighted in this study, which provides comprehensive CO2 emission inventories for 287 Chinese cities from 2001 to 2019. The study reveals the emission trends and driving forces in these cities, showing that some cities have proactively peaked their emissions through efficiency improvements and energy use changes, while others passively decreased emissions through economic recession or population loss. The study emphasizes the need for passively emission declined cities to address the reasons behind emission decline and utilize low-carbon targets for economic recovery and carbon mitigation. Proactively peaked cities should seek strategies to maintain emission reductions and serve as successful models for cities with growing emissions.

Risk of intact forest landscape loss goes beyond global agricultural supply chains

Siyi Kan, Bin Chen, U. Martin Persson, Guoqian Chen, Yutao Wang, Jiashuo Li, Jing Meng, Heran Zheng, Lan Yang, Rui Li, Mingxi Du, Thomas Kastner

Summary: Despite global conservation initiatives, unfragmented intact forest landscapes (IFLs) continue to be lost due to various economic activities. Non-agricultural products are major contributors to IFL loss, with over 60% linked to final consumption. Export, primarily from Russia, Canada, and tropical regions, accounts for more than one-third of IFL loss, with logging and mining as the major causes. It is crucial for governments to engage and intervene in supply chains to address the dispersed drivers of IFL loss and their indirect links to individual consumers.
