Mollusks, including bivalve and gastropod samples, were collected in the summer of 2006 and 2007 to evaluate the spatial patterns of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the coastal water of the Chinese Bohai Sea. Seven species of mollusks, including Rapana venosa (Rap), Neverita didyma (Nev), Scapharca subcrenata (Sca), Mytilus edulis (Blue mussel, Myt), Amusium (Amu), Meretix meretrix (Mer), and Crassostrea talienwhanensis (Oyster, Ost) were investigated to select appropriate bioindicators. Compared with other species, Ost and Myt possess higher lipid contents and have higher concentrations of OCPs and PBDEs. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that the most influential factor on the contaminant concentrations in mollusks is the trophic level (TL), followed by the lipid contents. Concentrations of OCPs, PCBs, and PBDEs correlated negatively with the TL of the selected mollusks. Results of principal component and correlation analyses suggest that Ost and Myt can be used as potential bioindicators of pollution by OCPs, PCBs,and PBDEs of the Chinese Bohai Sea.

Prenatal and postnatal transfer of perfluoroalkyl substances from mothers to their offspring

Yingxue Liu, An Li, Qi An, Kai Liu, Ping Zheng, Shanshan Yin, Weiping Liu

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on the transfer of PFASs from mothers to fetuses/infants, highlighting the different transfer efficiencies and potential risks associated with prenatal and postnatal exposure. The study found that transfer efficiencies vary among different PFASs, and infants may face greater PFAS exposure through breastfeeding in the first month than through transplacental transfer during the entire gestation period. This review sheds light on the critical environmental health issue of PFASs in fetuses and infants, emphasizing the need for greater attention and awareness in society.

Persistent and toxic chemical pollutants in fish consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States

An Li, Qiaozhi Tang, Kenneth E. Kearney, Kathryn L. Nagy, Jing Zhang, Susan Buchanan, Mary E. Turyk

Summary: Seafood consumption is more frequent among Asians compared to other ethnic groups in the U.S., but there is little information about how culturally specific fish consumption contributes to exposure to toxicants. This study surveyed fish consumption among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities in Chicago and analyzed 103 seafood samples for mercury and organic chemicals. The research found that certain types of fish, such as bluefish, pike, and tuna steak, had high mercury levels, while octopus, shrimp, and tilapia were the least contaminated. Omega-3 fatty acids were more associated with organic contaminants than mercury. Consumption limitations were identified for seven types of fish based on risk assessment.

Persistent and Toxic Chemical Pollutants in Fish Consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States (vol 811, 152214, 2022)

An Li, Qiaozhi Tang, Kenneth E. Kearney, Kathryn L. Nagy, Jing Zhang, Susan Buchanan, Mary E. Turyk

Summary: This study investigated fish consumption among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities in Chicago and analyzed the levels of mercury and 92 organic chemicals in 103 seafood samples. The results showed that pike, bluefish, and pollock were the most contaminated fish, while octopus, shrimp, and tilapia were the least contaminated. Furthermore, the study found a stronger association between omega-3 fatty acids and organic contaminants than mercury.

Extensive chemical and bioassay analysis of polycyclic aromatic compounds in a creosote-contaminated superfund soil following steam enhanced extraction

Ivan A. Titaley, Lisandra Santiago Delgado Trine, Thanh Wang, Daniel Duberg, Eva L. Davis, Magnus Engwall, Staci L. Massey Simonich, Maria Larsson

Summary: The study found that steam enhanced extraction (SEE) effectively removes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil, but less is known about the removal of alkyl-PAHs and heterocyclic PACs. The research also showed an increase in the concentration of oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) during SEE and a decrease in freely dissolved PACs and soil bioactivities post-SEE.

Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Pregnant Women: Sources, Occurrence, and Potential Risks to Pregnancy Outcomes

Yongting Li, Xin Wang, Qingqing Zhu, Yaqian Xu, Qiuguo Fu, Thanh Wang, Chunyang Liao, Guibin Jiang

Summary: Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely present in the environment and can be found in both pregnant women and their babies. Exposure to OPFRs during pregnancy can have negative effects on both the mother and the fetus, including oxidative stress, hypertension, thyroid hormone disruption, and abnormal fetal development. This review highlights the importance of evaluating the health risks associated with OPFR exposure in pregnant women and emphasizes the need for further research in this area.

Unexpected Dioxin Formation During Digestion of Soil with Oxidizing Acids

Wenjing Xie, Wenjuan Li, Pu Wang, Yanfen Hao, Bolei Chen, Ligang Hu, Thanh Wang, Qinghua Zhang, Yong Liang, Guibin Jiang

Summary: This study discovered abundant dioxin formation in soil and organic carbon-containing matrices after digestion, with significant correlation observed between Sigma 17PCDD/F concentration and soil organic carbon content. Humic acid was found to be an important component in the conversion of organic matter to PCDD/Fs during digestion. The strong oxidation and production of reactive chlorine by aqua regia were identified as key factors in PCDD/F formation. The annual emission of PCDD/Fs due to digestion with strong acids by the inspection and testing industry was estimated to be 83.8 g TEQ in China in 2021, highlighting the importance of addressing unexpected dioxin formation during digestion processes.

An Li, Shanshan Zhou, Huan He, Jiehong Guo, Karl J. Rockne, Neil C. Sturchio, John P. Giesy

Summary: This study investigated polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) in sediments of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The results showed that CZs were widely present in the sediments, with 3-bromo-carbazoles and 3-chloro-carbazoles being the most abundant. Since the 1980s, the concentrations of some dibromocarbazoles have rapidly increased, while PHCZs of natural origin have decreased in the eastern and southern regions.

Properties and fate and transport of persistent and mobile polar organic water pollutants: A review

Erik R. R. Christensen, Yin Wang, Jingwan Huo, An Li

Summary: This review focuses on the properties and fate of polar organic pollutants in natural waters and engineered aquatic systems. It discusses the occurrence and treatment efficiencies of various compound groups, including PFAS, pesticides, PPCPs, and other compounds. The review also presents a new approach to characterizing mobile compounds based on their basic properties and provides insights into the current status and research needs of aquatic and multimedia models. The findings suggest that many pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors can be effectively removed from water through sorption, chemical oxidation, photolysis, and biodegradation. Additionally, sediment core profiles may not accurately reflect the chronological production and use of polar organics due to post-depositional mobility of water-soluble compounds. The review proposes a novel method for identifying mobile compounds using sediment records, and highlights the development of models for PFAS, insecticides, fungicides, atrazine, and pharmaceuticals.
