Summary: This study revealed associations between environmental phenols and sex hormone levels among pre- and postmenopausal women. The results showed that doubling of urinary bisphenol S (BPS) concentration was inversely related to serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentration in premenopausal women. Additionally, doubling of urinary benzophenone-3 (BP-3) concentration was positively associated with SHBG level in serum. In postmenopausal women, inverse associations were observed between urinary BPS levels and serum estradiol concentrations.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between environmental exposure to heavy metals and sex hormones in postmenopausal women. The results showed positive linear correlations between cadmium and total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and testosterone/estradiol ratio. Lead was positively associated with sex hormone binding globulin and testosterone/estradiol ratio. Manganese exhibited a nonlinear association with sex hormone binding globulin and testosterone/estradiol ratio. Selenium had a U-shaped nonlinear association with total testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin. These findings suggest that environmental exposure to heavy metals may disrupt sex hormone levels in postmenopausal women.

Summary: A sorption-electroflotation method using carbon nanomaterials was developed to remove non-biodegradable and carcinogenic toxic metal ions. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanoshells (CNSs) were used to remove Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Fe(II), and Cu(II). Surface properties and composition of the nanomaterials were characterized, and different models were applied to analyze the data. The method showed excellent removal efficiency, with the highest percentage removal achieved through simultaneous sorption-electroflotation.

Summary: The production of economic green hydrogen fuel is in high demand. In this study, hydrogen generation by water radiolysis of a hexane-water system on ZrO2 surface was investigated at different temperatures. The radiation-catalytic decomposition of hexane-water increased at high temperatures and resulted in an increase in hydrogen production. At a temperature of 673 K, a chain mode conversion of the key products of hexane-water led to molecular hydrogen. The maximum yield of hydrogen achieved was 188.5 molecule/100 eV with the n-ZrO2 + C6H14(ads)-water (0.003 g: 0.0051 g: 0.0015 g) system at 673 K.

Summary: Berberine was extracted from Berberis vulgaris, Berberis aquifolium, and Hydrastis canadensis using ethanol and water (70:30, v/v). The extracted berberine was characterized using UV-visible and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Thin-layer chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods were both employed for the separation and identification of berberine, and showed different applications. The extracted berberine exhibited better activity in treating Leishmaniosis compared to the standard drug Amphotericin B.

Summary: In this study, the enantio-separation of three chiral sulfoxide drugs was achieved on a Chiralpak AS-3R column using acetonitrile-water as the mobile phase. The chiral separation was validated properly with LOD and LOQ values of 9.70-14.16 and 29.39-42.91 μg/mL, respectively. The enantiomer elution order was confirmed through experimental and theoretical methods. A simple, fast, reliable, and thermodynamically stable HPLC method was developed for the separation and determination of enantiomer elution order of the chiral sulfoxide drugs.

Summary: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) synthesized by the microwave method were found to enhance the thermal and electrical conductivity of silicone elastomers. The highest thermal conductivity achieved was 0.48 W/m°C with 8.0 wt% MWCNTs, while the highest electrical conductivity reached 2.4 x 10-5 S/cm. Microwave-synthesized MWCNTs demonstrated high stability in an electrical resistance heater application, making them suitable for household appliances.

Summary: In this study, a series of novel 1,2,4-oxadiazole-sulfonamide conjugates were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Compound 8d showed significant inhibitory activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, and exhibited synergistic effect with some antibiotics. It also demonstrated favorable drug-like characteristics and no toxicity towards human red blood cells.

Summary: Due to its simple process, environmental friendliness, and low operating costs, biometallurgy has become a popular technology for metals recovering from low-grade ores and tailings. An optimized agar was used to isolate and grow functional bacteria, resulting in the successful isolation of six functional stains. These strains were further tested for their ability to leach metals from polymetallic sulfide tailings, with significant improvements observed when the strains were mixed together. The selection of leaching process should be based on tailings composition and target metals.

Summary: This study examines the association between urban Green and blue spaces (GBS) exposure and Emotion and behavior problems (EBP) in youth populations. The findings suggest that higher exposure to GBS, particularly green spaces (GS) and blue spaces (BS), is associated with a decrease in the risk of developing total difficulties in young individuals. The joint effect of GS and BS may also contribute to the decrease in EBPs.

Summary: Air pollution is associated with a range of health issues and gestational exposure to environmental pollutants may be linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. This study investigated the effects of oral gestational exposure to particulate matter (PM) on ultrasonic vocalizations (USV). The findings suggest that this exposure may lead to social deficits and abnormal gene expression related to neurotransmitter systems. Further research is needed to better understand the effects of air pollution on neurodevelopmental disorders and the neurotransmission systems involved.

Summary: The present study investigated the sustainable approach for wastewater treatment using waste algal blooms. The biochar produced by the marine algae Ulva reticulata was used to remove chromium, nickel, and zinc from aqueous solutions. The study examined the adsorbents' properties and stability using SEM/EDX, FTIR, and XRD. The results showed that the biochar had high removal efficiency for the toxic metals, and the packed bed column effectively removed the heavy metal ions. The Thomas and Adams-Bohart models were found to best fit the regression values, and desorption studies were conducted to understand the sorption and elution processes.

Summary: The selection of predictor variables is crucial in building a digital mapping model for potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil. Traditionally, spatial and spectral parameters have been used as predictor variables, but the temporal dimension is often overlooked. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating temporal indices in the model, leading to significant performance improvements. The temporal-spatial-spectral covariate combinations used in a random forest (RF) algorithm achieve satisfactory mapping accuracy and outperform other methods.

Summary: Heteroatom doping can reconfigure the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts, leading to the development of advanced oxidation water purification materials with superior performance and stability. In this study, a series of catalysts with different elemental doping were prepared using a simple and environmentally friendly method. The S-doped NiCo2O4 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance for the removal of Tetracycline, with significantly increased kinetic constant and high oxidation and mineralization efficiency in a wide pH range. The degradation process was dominated by non-radical oxidation pathway after S doping, and the overall process moved towards low toxicity.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial degradation of naphthalene (NPT) isolated from crude oil-contaminated soil. Bacillus sp. GN 3.4, a potential bacteria for NPT biodegradation, was isolated and the optimal conditions for NPT degradation were determined. The study suggests that Bacillus sp. GN 3.4 could potentially aid in bioremediation by eliminating NPT from the soil.
