A new methodology has been developed for the determination of secondary alkane sulfonates (SAS), an anionic surfactant, in environmental matrices. Sediment and sludge samples were extracted using pressurized liquid extraction and sonication, whereas wastewater and surface water samples were processed using solid-phase extraction. Extraction recoveries were acceptable for both aqueous (78-120%) and solid samples (83-100%). Determination of SAS was carried out by high or ultra performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry using ion trap and time-of-flight detectors. The methodology was applied to samples from Guadalete River (SW Spain), where SAS concentrations below 1 mu g L-1 were measured in surface water, and from 72 to 9737 mu g kg(-1) in sediments. Differential partitioning was observed for SAS homologues as those having a longer hydrocarbon chain which preferentially sorbed onto particulate matter. A preliminary environmental risk assessment also showed that SAS measured levels were not harmful to the aquatic community in the sampling area. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of non-ionic synthetic surfactants in soils through experiments and simulations, finding that the sorption coefficient was generally lower under environmental flow conditions compared to batch experiments. This highlights the importance of using reactive transport parameterization inferred under realistic conditions when assessing the risk associated with these surfactants in subsurface environments.

Emerging contaminants and priority substances in marine sediments from Cartagena Bay and the Grand Marsh of Santa Marta (Ramsar site), Colombia

Summary: Emerging pollutants and priority substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PCBs, were detected in sediments from both Cartagena Bay and the Grand Marsh of Santa Marta. While some sites in Cartagena Bay exceeded threshold effects levels for PAHs, none of the stations in the marsh did. The cytotoxicity of HepG2 cells exposed to sediment extracts showed a negative correlation with chlorpyrifos concentration, indicating specific contamination fingerprints related to anthropogenic interventions in these ecosystems.

Multi-omic approach to evaluate the response of gilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) exposed to the UV filter sulisobenzone

Summary: Sulisobenzone (BP-4) is a commonly detected UV filter in aquatic ecosystems with suspected endocrine disrupting effects. Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of BP-4 in gilt-head sea bream resulted in disruption of energy and lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and impacts on enzymes involved in steroid and thyroid hormones biosynthesis. This integrated multiomic approach highlights additional modes of action of BP-4 that may have been overlooked by traditional single omic methods.

V. Gomez-Ceballos, P. A. Lara-Martin, Z. Zapata-Benabithe, J. A. Velasquez-Jimenez, G. Quintana-Marin

Summary: This study describes a method to enhance the efficiency of Kraft lignin in removing PhACs from pharmaceutical wastewater, by chemically modifying the lignin and preparing a bioadsorbent with increased active sites. The modified bioadsorbent showed improved sorption for PhACs without chlorine and fluorine atoms in their structure, making the adsorption process endothermic and spontaneous.

Summary: The Arctic region is facing contamination from long-range pollution and local human activities. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are used as environmental indicators for emission, transport, and deposition processes. Research conducted in the Arctic surface snow in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard from October 2018 to May 2019 shows that long-range inputs of PAHs mainly occur in winter, while the most abundant analyte retene exhibits opposite seasonal trends.

A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model of diethyl phthalates in humans

Shiyu Chen, Zhenzhen Shi, Qiang Zhang

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.

Disturbance mitigation of thiencarbazone-methyl•isoxaflutole on bacterial communities through nitrification inhibitor and attapulgite

Yonglu Wang, Fengsong Zhang, Xiaoyong Liao, Xiao Yang, Guixiang Zhang, Liyun Zhang, Chaojun Wei, Pengge Shi, Jiongxin Wen, Xiaorong Ju, Can Xu, Yang Liu, Ying Lan

Summary: This study aims to explore the effects of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole on soil microflora and the potential mitigation mechanisms to bacterial communities. It was found that increasing the application of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole resulted in increased stress on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Increasing soil pH was recognized as a key factor in improving the diversity and structure of soil microflora. Supplemental use of nitrapyrin or modified attapulgite can increase soil pH and improve bacterial diversity.
