Microsporidia parasites are commonly found in amphipods, where they are often asymptomatic, vertically-transmitted and have several effects on host sexuality and behaviour. As amphipods are often used as models in ecotoxicological studies, we investigated the effect of microsporidian infections on energy reserves and defence capacities of Gammarus roeseli under cadmium stress. Only females were infected by two microsporidia parasites: Dictyocoela roeselum or Dictyocoela muelleri. In physiological conditions, microsporidia had no major effect on energy reserves and defence capacities of G. roeseli, while under cadmium exposure, energy reserves and antioxidant defence were weaker in infected females. Moreover, higher malondialdehyde levels detected in infected females revealed that they suffered more cellular damages. Our results suggest that microsporidia may affect gammarid fitness in stressful conditions, when parasitic stress cannot be compensated by the host. Consequently, microsporidia parasites should be a factor necessary to take into account in ecotoxicology studies involving amphipods. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Late-life reproduction in an insect: Terminal investment, reproductive restraint or senescence

Charly Jehan, Camille Sabarly, Thierry Rigaud, Yannick Moret

Summary: The study found that female mealworm beetles show a decline in reproductive capacity as they age, rather than increasing reproductive effort late in life as predicted by the terminal investment hypothesis. Instead, females appear to allocate resources according to a priority scheme favoring longevity over reproduction, which aligns with the reproductive restraint hypothesis.

Summary: This study compared standard morphological identification with DNA metabarcoding in stream biomonitoring using macroinvertebrates and found that combining data from different markers can improve bioassessment efficiency. Both approaches assigned the same ecological quality class to a majority of the site sampling events, highlighting the efficiency of metabarcoding as a biomonitoring tool but also the need for further research to improve this efficiency.

Summary: Parasites and other symbionts have a significant impact on host organisms, and understanding their diversity is crucial in studying symbiotic influences. This study focuses on rare microsporidian infections within Gammarus balcanicus, expanding the knowledge on parasite diversity in amphipod hosts. The research discovered 29 sequences of rare Microsporidia in 19 haplogroups, indicating a wide geographic range of these parasites and a variety of hosts they infect.

Trophic impact of Neogobius melanostomus in a restored site on the Old Rhine River (France)

Summary: Habitat changes induced by restoration can promote invasive species, potentially hindering the success of restoration projects. In this study, the effects of the invasive round goby on a restored site along the Old Rhine River were examined. The round goby dominated the overall goby assemblage and its presence led to changes in the food web structure and species interactions. However, its impact on macroinvertebrates six years after restoration was unlikely to mask the restoration consequences.

Summary: The study reports sequencing and analysis of three strictly vertically transmitted microsporidia species with feminization induction ability in amphipod crustaceans. These feminizing microsporidia, unlike horizontally transmitted ones, cannot easily be isolated, so a computational strategy was used to cosequence symbiont and host genomic DNA. Genomic comparison with feminizing Wolbachia in isopod crustaceans shows independent evolution of feminization in microsporidia and Wolbachia at the molecular genetic level.

A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model of diethyl phthalates in humans

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study aims to explore the effects of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole on soil microflora and the potential mitigation mechanisms to bacterial communities. It was found that increasing the application of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole resulted in increased stress on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Increasing soil pH was recognized as a key factor in improving the diversity and structure of soil microflora. Supplemental use of nitrapyrin or modified attapulgite can increase soil pH and improve bacterial diversity.
