Summary: This paper demonstrates the use of metabolic engineering in Cucurbita pepo hairy roots to increase and modify cucurbitacins, highly-oxygenated triterpenoids with significant biological and pharmacological activities. The authors show that cucurbitacin biosynthesis can be induced by transcription factors and that overexpression of specific enzymes can introduce novel modifications in the compounds. This study highlights the potential of hairy roots as a tool for metabolic engineering and pathway modification.

Summary: The environmental conditions of groundwater and surface water vary greatly depending on the location, which can affect the physical and chemical properties of nanocomposites and pollutants used in remediation. In this study, magnetic nanocomposite microparticle (MNM) gels were used as sorbents for remediating PCB 126 as a model organic contaminant. The effects of ionic strength, water hardness, and pH on the sorption efficiency of the MNMs for PCB 126 were studied. The results showed that ionic strength and water hardness had minimal effects on the sorption of PCB 126 by MNM gels, while an increased pH resulted in a decrease in binding, likely due to anion-pi interactions.

This review identified the presence of 149 different PCBs in paint samples, which is more than what has been reported in commercial Aroclor formulations. The study also provides valuable information on the mechanisms of PCB formation in pigments, dyes, and paints, as well as additional classes of pigments that are expected to contain PCBs.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Franciscana dolphins from three regions in Brazil. The results showed that PCBs and DDTs were the predominant pollutants, with the highest PCB concentrations observed in highly urbanized and industrial areas. The sex and maturity of the dolphins had significant effects on the POPs concentrations. Although the concentrations of POPs are declining, PCB levels remain high and pose adverse health effects on the dolphins.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that unintentionally produced PCBs are major contributors to atmospheric PCBs and are controlling PCB burdens in agricultural soils across China. The dominant contributors to PCBs in Chinese agricultural soils are the legacy of historically produced and used commercial PCB mixtures, especially high-chlorinated congeners. Unintentional sources, such as pigment/paint, combustion-related sources, and polymer sealants, account for a significant portion of total PCBs in Chinese soils.

Summary: Two new classes of PCB metabolites, sulfonated-polychlorinated biphenyls (sulfonatedPCBs) and hydroxy-sulfonated-polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-sulfonated-PCBs), have been recently discovered. They are more polar than their parent compounds, but little is known about their chemical identity, ecotoxicity, or toxicity. This study provides the first evidence on the fate of these metabolites in the environment and presents results from various experiments to evaluate their soil partition coefficients, degradation after rhizoremediation, uptake by plants and earthworms, and an analytical method for extracting and concentrating these compounds from water.

Bioaugmentation with metal-resistant bacteria and utilization of sorbents/biosurfactants are potential solutions for the detoxification of Cr(VI) and PCBs.

Summary: The Arctic region is facing contamination from long-range pollution and local human activities. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are used as environmental indicators for emission, transport, and deposition processes. Research conducted in the Arctic surface snow in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard from October 2018 to May 2019 shows that long-range inputs of PAHs mainly occur in winter, while the most abundant analyte retene exhibits opposite seasonal trends.

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of biochar on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice. The results show that biochar reduces MeHg levels in paddy soils by decreasing bioavailable Hg and microbial Hg methylation. Additionally, biochar decreases the uptake and translocation of MeHg in rice plants, resulting in a reduction of MeHg accumulation in rice grains.

Summary: This study investigates the protein targets and protein-ligand interactions related to PAH contamination in crop xylem sap using computational tools. The results show that phenanthrene has a more pronounced effect on the xylem sap proteins of maize and wheat, with maize DEPs associated with lipid biosynthesis and wheat DEPs exhibiting an increase in ABC transporters. This study provides insights into the regulation and movement of PAHs within plant xylem.

The study highlights the importance of considering trace antibiotics pollution and corrosion scales in water sources for DBP control.

Summary: This study aims to explore the effects of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole on soil microflora and the potential mitigation mechanisms to bacterial communities. It was found that increasing the application of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole resulted in increased stress on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Increasing soil pH was recognized as a key factor in improving the diversity and structure of soil microflora. Supplemental use of nitrapyrin or modified attapulgite can increase soil pH and improve bacterial diversity.
