In the present research, accumulation of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn were determined in sediments and fillet, liver, kidney, gonads, and gills of three commonly fish species in the largest wetland ecosystem that is located in southwest of Iran; Shadegan wetland. Shadegan is one of the most important wetland that posses various fauna and flora but suffers inputs from agricultural and industrial activities. So, sediment samples and fish species including Barbus grypus, Barbus sharpeyi, and Cyprinus carpio were collected during winter 2009. Results showed that mean concentrations of trace elements (except Ni and Co) were high in liver and gills of B. grypus. Also trace elements had the most accumulation in liver of B. sharpeyi except for Cd (0.26 mg kg (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) d.w.) and Mn (13.45 mg kg (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) d.w.) that were high in gills. Beside, kidney is determined as target tissue for Ni and V in B. grypus and for Pb in C. carpio, due to their high concentration. Zn levels in all tissues of C. carpio showed the highest concentrations in comparison to other fish species. Generally, accumulations of most of the studied elements in B. grypus and B. sharpeyi were higher in females than in males, while in fillet and gonads of C. carpio, this trend was inverted. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were determined for different tissues of fish species with respect to elemental concentrations in sediment. BAFs results indicated that Zn, Pb, and Cu have higher BAF than other elements. Also this investigation demonstrated that trace elements have different affinities with condition factor of studied fish species. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Pb showed positive correlation together in both B. sharpeyi and B. grypus, respectively, in females and males. Moreover, females of C. carpio showed significantly positive relation of GSI and all studied elements.

Redox-induced mobilization of rare earth elements in sediments of the northwestern part of the Persian Gulf

R. Madadi, M. Saeedi, A. Karbassi

Summary: Petrochemical plants are the main sources of rare earth elements (REEs) in the Musa estuary, and the accumulated REEs in sedimentary beds can be released into the water column under different redox conditions. A study using a biogeochemical microcosm system found that the release of REEs in an estuarine sediment sample was influenced by the redox potential (Eh). The average mobilization rate of REEs was 31.03% under reducing Eh. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis showed that Eh indirectly affected the solubility and release of REEs through the linked changes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chemistry of Fe-Mn. Enrichment factors (EFs) revealed that the Musa estuary is threatened by Ce, Dy, La, Nd, Pr, and Sm. Serious consideration should be given to the high potential mobility of REEs due to their ecotoxicological effects causing environmental risk and health issues.

Sustainable power generation through decarbonization in the power generation industry

Sadaf Ziyaei, Mostafa Panahi, Davoud Manzour, Abdolreza Karbasi, Hamidreza Ghaffarzadeh

Summary: Due to the use of fossil energy resources, power generation has become the primary cause of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to address this issue, seven scenarios for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions in the power industry were defined and evaluated in terms of technical, economic, and environmental factors. The results showed that developing renewable power plants alone is not the most suitable option for reducing emissions. Instead, improving efficiency in thermal power plants, such as through the development of combined cycle power plants and repowering steam power plants, is a more feasible solution. By adopting a combined scenario that includes reducing the share of thermal power plants and increasing the share of renewable power plants, significant reductions in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved.

Impact Analysis of Internalizing Environmental Costs on Technical, Economic, and Environmental Performances for Power Plants

Sadaf Ziyaei, Mostafa Panahi, Davoud Manzour, Abdolreza Karbasi, Hamidreza Ghaffarzadeh

Summary: This study investigates the effects of internalizing environmental costs on technical, environmental, and economic aspects of electricity production. Historical data and benefit transfer economic method were used to calculate the environmental costs associated with different methods of electricity generation per kilowatt-hour. MATLAB software was utilized to internalize these costs into private electricity generation costs. The results show that thermal power plants have environmental costs ranging from 0.052 to 0.135 C$/kwh. Internalizing these costs can lead to an increase in the share of clean and renewable technologies and a decrease in fossil energy plants. From 2017 to 2050, fossil fuel consumption is expected to decline by about 124 billion m(3) of natural gas equivalent, with a reduction in pollutant and GHGs emission. The overall cost of producing electricity will also decrease significantly. However, limitations on other sources of electricity production and existing policies contribute to the dominance of thermal power plants.
