Rock minerals such as dimension and crushed stones and sands and gravels (aggregates) are indispensable materials for the building and construction industries. The growth in demand for these resources causes intensification of mining operations (and their consequent environmental impacts) and transport problems in regions abundant in rock minerals. The balanced management of these resources by regional policy-makers is difficult as it requires, among other things, comprehensive and up-to-date information on the spatial distribution and temporal changes of available reserves, demand, production, and transport. This information can be provided by means of spatial and temporal analyses through geographic information systems (GIS). In this research, the focus is on the following aspects of rock mineral (aggregates) resources and mining management in the context of regional spatial planning in the example region of Lower Silesia in Poland: the spatial and temporal changes in distribution and intensity of mining, the availability of economic reserves in active mines, the magnitude and distribution of road transport flows of aggregates, the potential of railways as an alternative means of transport, and the valorisation of undeveloped aggregates deposits to assess their suitability for future use. For the purposes of this study, cartographic models have been developed using GIS to facilitate analyses of these mineral resources, mining, and transport. The results of these analyses provide current and comprehensive information on the state of aggregates mineral resources, production and transport in the Lower Silesia region. They also give an insight into availability of rock mineral resources for the future. Knowledge of these processes is important for spatial development planning, especially physical infrastructure, conducted by national, regional, and local governments.

GIS-Based Approach to Spatio-Temporal Interpolation of Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations in Limited Monitoring Dataset

Yaroslav Bezyk, Izabela Sowka, Maciej Gorka, Jan Blachowski

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of interpolation techniques and adjust interpolation parameters by observing the spatial characteristics and temporal trends of atmospheric CO2 levels in Wroclaw city. It discusses the impact of different interpolation methods on assessing air pollutant levels in urban environments and identifies optimal sampling strategies. The study also explores optimization schemes based on kriging error predictions and extends interpolation results by considering future sampling limitations on seasonal representation of CO2 levels in urban areas.

Assessing the Cooling Effect of Four Urban Parks of Different Sizes in a Temperate Continental Climate Zone: Wroclaw (Poland)

Jan Blachowski, Monika Hajnrych

Summary: This study analyzed the cooling effects of four urban parks in the city of Wroclaw using Landsat 8 data, demonstrating the role of parks in mitigating the urban heat island effect through various metrics and spatial statistics. The results provide new insights into the regulation of urban temperature in a medium-sized city with a continental climate.

Summary: This study investigates the secondary deformations in the underground mining area of the former Babina lignite mine in western Poland. It identifies subsidence-prone areas and determines potential factors of sinkhole development using GIS-based historical mapping, geophysical microgravimetry, and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) measurements.

Analysis of Lidar Actuator System Influence on the Quality of Dense 3D Point Cloud Obtained with SLAM

Summary: Mobile mapping technologies, such as SLAM and SfM, are crucial for 3D surveying and autonomous vehicles. However, the current multiline scanners used in mapping hardware have gaps between scanning lines and limited vertical field of view. To overcome these issues, researchers have added tilting or rotating motors to the lidar. This paper presents an adjustable mapping system that switches between stable, tilting, and fully rotating lidar positions, and evaluates the impact on 3D data quality using different metrics.

Analysis of Post-Mining Vegetation Development Using Remote Sensing and Spatial Regression Approach: A Case Study of Former Babina Mine (Western Poland)

Anna Buczynska, Jan Blachowski, Natalia Bugajska-Jedraszek

Summary: This study investigates the changes in vegetation condition in a post-mining area over a 30-year period. The results show an overall improvement in flora condition, except for the northwestern part of the former mining field. Four zones with significant changes in flora condition were identified. The study demonstrates that past mining activities have had a significant impact on the plant cover state of the analyzed region.

Summary: The study aims to monitor the condition of a rehabilitated post-mining area using satellite-derived spectral vegetation indices and Geographic Information System (GIS). The study area in Western Poland has unique characteristics due to combined underground and open pit mining and glaciotectonic processes. The results show that the vegetation in the area is generally in good condition, but there are also local phenomena of vegetation changes.

Mining Ground Deformation Estimation Based on Pre-Processed InSAR Open Data-A Norwegian Case Study

Jan Blachowski, Steinar L. Ellefmo

Summary: This study aimed to assess the extent of surface deformation caused by mining activities in a steep iron ore deposit in Norway. The innovative combination of the permanent scatterer (PS) InSAR technique, line-of-sight (LOS) movement data, and GIS spatial interpolation methods was used. The results showed that the influence of mining activities on the surrounding area can be greater than previously thought.

Proposal of a new Mining and Geology Impact Factor (MaGIF) index for the study of post-mining environment

Anna Buczynska, Jan Blachowski

Summary: This study aims to identify the areas within the Babina mine mining area where previous mining activities and geological structure have the strongest impact on changes in flora and soil conditions. The research also reveals previously undocumented mining excavations. By using the Mining and Geology Impact Factor, along with spatial statistics based on spectral indices, the study finds six regions with significant impact on soil and vegetation, and extrapolates three areas where past mining activities may have occurred outside of archival records.

MIN3D Dataset: MultI-seNsor 3D Mapping with an Unmanned Ground Vehicle

Pawel Trybala, Jaroslaw Szrek, Fabio Remondino, Paulina Kujawa, Jacek Wodecki, Jan Blachowski, Radoslaw Zimroz

Summary: The research potential in the field of mobile mapping technologies is often hindered by constraints such as expensive hardware, limited access to target sites, and the collection of ground truth data. To address these challenges, the research community often provides open datasets. However, datasets that encompass demanding conditions with synchronized sensors are currently limited. To alleviate this issue, the MIN3D dataset is proposed, which includes data gathered using a wheeled mobile robot in two distinct locations. By sharing this dataset, the aim is to support the development of robust methods for navigation and mapping in challenging underground conditions.
