Characterization of mercury contamination in petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) is necessary in order to assess the risk of corrosion of the processing infrastructure and to assess the level of human exposure to Hg-containing substances. Here we present an accurate and sensitive method for determination of Hg species in PHs by headspace sampling with a possibility of on-line pre-concentration using in-tube extraction (ITEX) combined with gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS) analysis. Mercury species were first extracted from the PHs matrix into an aqueous phase via dithizone chelation and subsequently converted with sodium tetrapropyl borate into volatile derivatives which could be sampled from the headspace prior to GC-ICP-MS analysis. For concentrations in the ng kg(-1) range, the on-line ITEX method was applied, whereas the mu g kg(-1) range was accessible by static headspace. Quantitation of Hg species was carried out by a double isotope dilution method, with quantitative recoveries of methylmercury (MeHg, average 101 +/- 5%) and inorganic mercury (InHg, average 97 +/- 7%) by direct headspace injection. Average recoveries of Hg spikes after on-line ITEX pre-concentration were 95 +/- 3% for MeHg and 98 +/- 8% for InHg. The detection limits for MeHg and InHg were 428 and 46 ng kg(-1) when measured by static headspace, and 2.4 ng kg(-1) and 1.7 ng kg(-1) by on-line ITEX pre-concentration. The accuracy of the pre-concentration method was demonstrated by analysis of a crude oil standard reference material (NIST 2722) certified for InHg.

Summary: This study addresses the drawbacks of liquid-based seawater certified reference materials (CRMs) by developing a salt-based seawater proxy that can be reconstituted in water. The proxy demonstrates good stability for nutrients and has reduced costs compared to traditional CRMs.

Summary: Stable carbon isotope ratio measurements are used to investigate the origin of vanillin. This study analyzed commercial vanillin samples and vanilla products to establish a reference range of carbon isotope delta values in different vanillin samples. Two synthetic vanillin reference materials, VANA-1 and VANB-1, were developed for calibration purposes. The certified carbon isotope delta values of VANA-1 and VANB-1 were determined through characterization and testing using nine reference materials. The results are traceable to the VPDB.

Se-82 Metabolically-Labeled Yeast as a Matrix-Matched Isotope Dilution Standard for Quantification of Selenomethionine

Kelly L. LeBlanc, Gregoire Horndli, Marc-Antoine Bergeron, Zhigen Zhang, Patrick Denoncourt, Zoltan Mester

Summary: Selenized yeast is widely used as a source of selenium in dietary supplements and research due to its high bioavailability and formation of selenium-containing metabolites. Accurate quantitation of selenomethionine, the major form of selenium in selenized yeasts, is challenging and time-consuming. The National Research Council Canada has developed an 82-Se-enriched selenized yeast Certified Reference Material, SEEY-1, which can be used as a matrix-matched spike for the analysis of selenomethionine. SEEY-1 enables reliable analysis of Se amino acid content in under an hour compared to the conventional hydrolysis method.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the issues in arsenic speciation analysis in biological matrices and validate the analytical methods. An international round-robin study showed that inadequate verification of the analyte's mass fractions in calibration standard solutions could introduce significant biases. The choice of extraction method had minimal impact on quantitation of arsenic species in plant and terrestrial biological tissues, but following a prescribed extraction method resulted in reduced uncertainties in complex samples such as marine animal tissues.

Determination of selenium-containing species, including nanoparticles, in selenium-enriched Lingzhi mushrooms

Kelly L. LeBlanc, Tantima Kumlung, Andres Suarez Priede, Paramee Kumkrong, Thippaya Junvee, Suladda Deawtong, Jorg Bettmer, Maria Montes-Bayon, Zoltan Mester

Summary: Mushrooms are considered a valuable food source due to their high protein and fiber and low fat content. This study showed that selenium-enriched Lingzhi mushrooms contained low levels of selenium, with selenomethionine being the most abundant form. The mycelium of these mushrooms showed significant selenium accumulation and the presence of selenium nanoparticles, which could have potential medicinal value.
