Two strategies for refining sweet sorghum to ethanol and feedstuff were investigated in the inner Mongolia region, a typical pastoral area in China. Strategy 1 is to conduct submerged ethanol fermentation from sweet sorghum juice followed by feedstuff production from bagasse by a mixed culture of Aspergillus niger and Geotrichum candidum. Strategy 2 is to conduct solid-state ethanol fermentation from dried sweet sorghum stalk followed by feedstuff production from residue after ethanol distillation by a mixed culture of A. niger and G. candidum. The economic analysis indicated that strategy 2 performed a higher net present value than strategy 1 and the ethanol price had the greatest impact oil the net present value.

Summary: Comparing metabolites and transcriptome dynamics in liquid superficial-static culture (LSSC) and submerged culture (SC), this study found that LSSC is a better method for producing Ganoderic acid (GA). Key genes regulating GA biosynthesis as well as potential candidate genes associated with different GAs were identified. Additionally, upregulation of genes in the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway during submerged culture was observed, providing insights for future research on regulatory mechanisms of GAs in Ganoderma lucidum.

Roles of Small Subunits of Laccase (ssPOXA3a/b) in Laccase Production by Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae

Qi Zhang, Chang Yuan, Feng Wang, Sha Xu, Youran Li, Guiyang Shi, Zhongyang Ding

Summary: This study demonstrated that the combination of ssPOXA3a/b with POXA3 enhances the activity, thermostability, and pH stability of POXA3, while having a negative feedback effect on lacc6 transcription. Furthermore, overexpression of ssPOXA3a/b led to small fungal pellets, thin mycelial walls, and facilitated laccase secretion, providing insights for the development of high-yield laccase.

Halotolerant Bacillus velezensis sustainably enhanced oil recovery of low permeability oil reservoirs by producing biosurfactant and modulating the oil microbiome

Jun Yin, Xiaoxia Wei, Futang Hu, Changkun Cheng, Xuliang Zhuang, Maoyong Song, Guoqiang Zhuang, Feng Wang, Anzhou Ma

Summary: The halotolerant strain Bacillus velezensis BSA1 can produce biosurfactant and modulate the oil microbiome for enhancing oil recovery in low permeability oil reservoirs. Laboratory experiments showed that the oil recovered by B. velezensis BSA1 was 21.6 +/- 1.87 %. Field application also demonstrated successful results with a cumulative oil production of more than 500 m3 within 12 months. Monitoring of the microbial community in the reservoir revealed an increase in surfactant-producing bacteria and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, contributing to the enhancement of oil recovery.

Efficient extraction of phycobiliproteins from dry biomass of Spirulina platensis using sodium chloride as extraction enhancer

Feng Wang, Xiaolei Yu, Yi Cui, Ling Xu, Shuhao Huo, Zhongyang Ding, Qiaofeng Hu, Weijiao Xie, Haitao Xiao, Dezhi Zhang

Summary: An efficient strategy for extracting phycobiliproteins from Spirulina platensis dry biomass using NaCl as an enhancer was developed. The extraction parameters were optimized using response surface methodology and achieved a high extraction rate of 74.8% and a phycocyanin yield of 102.4 mg/g with a purity of 74.0%. Adding NaCl facilitated the exudation of phycobiliproteins by breaking down the cells of S. platensis without affecting their structure and antioxidant activity. It also improved the stability of the phycobiliproteins. This study provides a potential method for high-efficiency and high-quality phycobiliprotein extraction using an inexpensive enhancer.
