The role of histidine (His) on root uptake, xylem loading and root to shoot transport of nickel (Ni) was investigated in a winter (Triticum aestivum cv. Back Cross) and a durum wheat (Triticum durum cv. Durum) cultivar. Seedlings were grown in a modified Johnson nutrient solution and exposed to 10 mu M of Ni and 100 mu M of histidine (His) as no His, Ni (10) + His (100) and Ni(His) in a 1: 1 mole ratio (1: 1) complex. In our study, the presence of vanadate (a metabolic inhibitor) resulted in a significant decrease of root Ni uptake, indicating that a part of Ni uptake by the plant root is energy-dependent. Addition of His significantly increased the Ni content in shoots and roots of both wheat cultivars. The data suggest that the Ni(His) is most likely to be taken up as a complex or receptors at the membrane are able to enhance Ni uptake from Ni(His) complex. This result was indirectly supported by using EDTA as a strong chelating reagent to reduce the uptake of Ni(His) complexes. By using this ligand, the xylem loading of Ni and His was disproportionately reduced. Cycloheximide (a translation inhibitor) strongly decreased the release of His and Ni from the root into the xylem of wheat, suggesting the significance of a symplastic pathway for Ni loading into the xylem. Phosphate and methionine affect cadmium uptake in valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.)

Seyyedeh Atefeh Mousavi, Neda Dalir, Rasoul Rahnemaie, Rainer Schulin

Summary: This study found that exogenous methionine could reduce Cd accumulation in valerian roots, while increasing Cd uptake in the shoots. The addition of phosphate affected root Cd contents due to increased apoplastic Cd binding. However, in the presence of methionine, the phosphate effect on root Cd accumulation was mainly due to increased symplastic mot Cd allocation.

Rain-fed fig trees response to supplemental irrigation timing and potassium fertiliser in micro-catchment

Summary: Supplemental irrigation can improve soil water content, tree evapotranspiration, yield, and growth of rain-fed fig trees. Among the different irrigation timing treatments, March is the best time for supplemental irrigation in severe drought conditions to enhance both vegetative and generative traits in rain-fed fig orchards. Additionally, applying potassium at a rate of 150 g per tree through fertigation or 3 kg per 1000 L water through foliar application is recommended for achieving optimal fruit production in rained fig orchards under drought conditions.

Phosphate concentrations and methionine application affect quantitative and qualitative traits of valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) under hydroponic conditions

Seyyedeh Atefeh Mousavi, Neda Dalir, Rasoul Rahnemaie, Mohammad-Taghi Ebadi

Summary: The study investigated the effects of exogenous methionine and phosphate concentration on the biomass production and quality of valerian roots using a hydroponic system. Results showed that elevated phosphate concentration had a negative impact on yield and quality, while exogenous methionine supplementation improved measured plant traits, particularly at low phosphate concentration. Overall, supplying methionine at a relatively low phosphate concentration can significantly increase the yield and quality of valerian roots under hydroponic conditions.

Interactive effect of salinity and Ca to Mg ratio of irrigation water on pistachio growth parameters and its ionic composition in a calcareous soil

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different salinity and Ca/Mg ratios in irrigation water on the chemical composition of soil solution and growth of pistachio. The results showed that the EC of the soil solutions quickly approached the levels in irrigation water, while the Ca/Mg ratios changed slowly. Increasing EC led to reduced growth and increased electrolyte leakage in pistachio seedlings. The highest yield and membrane stability were achieved at a Ca/Mg ratio of 1 in the soil solution.

Methionine application at low phosphate level promotes root-to-shoot cadmium translocation by mobilizing weakly bound apoplastic cadmium in valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.)

Neda Dalir, Masoud Rahimi, Rainer Schulin

Summary: This study investigated the effects of phosphate and methionine on the distribution and chemical forms of Cd in valerian roots and shoots. The results showed that phosphate increased the HAc-soluble Cd phosphate fraction in roots, while methionine increased soluble Cd in both roots and shoots. The study suggests that these two substances play an important role in controlling the uptake and translocation of Cd in valerian.
