Summary: The use of indwelling medical devices has increased in recent years, improving the quality of life for patients. However, implant-associated infections, especially in orthopedic surgery, remain a common and serious complication. Staphylococcus aureus is the main cause of biomaterial-centered infections, forming biofilms that enable the bacteria to evade antimicrobial activity and the immune response. Understanding the mechanisms of biofilm formation and developing innovative anti-biofilm approaches are crucial for treating biomaterial-associated infections.

Summary: Cardiac medical devices (CMDs) are crucial for patients with compromised cardiac capacity or activity. The materials used in CMDs must possess strength, stiffness, rigidity, and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of the materials plays a critical role in the success of CMDs, as it can lead to problems such as hemocompatibility issues and infection.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated two types of ultra-low fouling surfaces to enhance the biocompatibility of medical grade silicone rubber tubes. The coatings showed superior resistance to clot formation and platelet adhesion, as well as significant reduction in bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, demonstrating their potential for preventing biofilm and thrombosis formation on medical devices.

Summary: Exposure to DEHP in critically ill children decreased over the years, but this did not result in improved attention 4 years later. Further investigation is needed to determine if the residual exposure may still be toxic or if the alternative plasticizers replacing DEHP are safe for neurodevelopment.

Summary: The study investigated the systematic amino acid substitution effects on the interaction between oligopeptides and silver colloidal nanoparticles, revealing the unique properties of these self-assembling molecular systems. The findings showed that the positional arrangement of peptides affects their interaction with nanoparticles, with COO- groups providing the main peptide-nanoparticle interactions. Additionally, gamma irradiation resulted in a systematic decrease in the distance between aliphatic chains and colloid nanoparticles.

Summary: Complications associated with indwelling urinary catheterization (IUC) can have significant impact on patient's health, with catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CA-UTI) being the most common issue. Factors such as age, level of education, and duration of catheterization are closely linked to CA-UTI in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Summary: The beat frequency, flow rate, and oxygen content of human pulsating blood are important health indicators. Noninvasive methods are used for early diagnosis of diseases and real-time monitoring of cardiovascular health. Blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate are key indices for assessing the cardiovascular system. This study summarizes the research outcomes of sensor devices used for blood oxygen and pulse rate signal monitoring and presents enlightening prospects for the future development of flexible PPG sensors.

Summary: The article provides a state-of-the-art review of the impact of dry friction on polymeric components in medical devices, including those with microscale surface features. Surface tribology, contact interactions, and alternative forms of surface texturing are discussed. The article also highlights gaps in the literature and areas for future research, such as friction between polymer surfaces, optimal topologies and feature spacings for textured surfaces, and design guidelines for minimizing or maximizing friction under non-lubricated conditions.

Summary: A simple surface modification technique has been developed to reduce microbial and protein adhesion on artificial materials, showing promising results in clinical applications. The treated surfaces exhibit strong resistance against adhesion and are non-toxic to cells. Surface-treated catheters have been approved by the FDA and have shown good clinical efficacy in patients.
