It has recently been discovered that many microbial species have the capacity to connect their metabolism to solid electrodes, directly exchanging electrons with them through membrane-bound redox compounds, nevertheless such a direct electron transfer pathway has been evoked rarely in the domain of microbial corrosion. Here was evidenced for the first time that the bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens is able to increase the free potential of 304 L stainless steel up to 443 mV in only a Few hours, which represents a drastic increase in the corrosion risk. In contrast, when the bacterial cells form a locally well-established biofilm, pitting potentials were delayed towards positive values. The microscopy pictures confirmed an intimate correlation between the zones where pitting occurred and the local settlement of cells. Geobacter species must now be considered as key players in the mechanisms of corrosion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Summary: The microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES) is a cost-effective technology that reduces wastewater treatment costs by minimizing the need for aeration. Proper aeration can enhance MES potential and improve COD removal efficiency. Adjusting aeration zone and frequency is crucial for running MES in optimal conditions to increase efficiency and stability.

Summary: The study showed that bacterial cells require an electric field to form electroactive biofilms, with the cells' ability to detect K+ and Na+ ion gradients at the electrode surface being crucial. This finding highlights the importance of microbial electrotaxis in biofilm formation and opens up potential implications in the biomedical field.

Design of 3D microbial anodes for microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) fuelled by domestic wastewater. Part I: Multiphysics modelling

Summary: The study demonstrates that utilizing three-dimensional microbial anodes can increase current generation and COD removal rate simultaneously, and further improvements can be achieved by designing 3D anode geometrical arrangements. Replacing a monolithic 3D graphite anode with plates stacked on top of each other can provide a 20% gain. Moreover, switching from a two-compartment MEC to a three-compartment MEC design can further optimize hydrogen production performance by an additional 20%.
