International and Brazilian standards have in common the acid number as the main qualification parameter for biodiesel. Free fatty acids lead to engine corrosion and contribute to the formation of gum. The analytical methods specified for analysis are based on colorimetric and potentiometric titrations, which are characterised by lack of selectivity. This article proposes a new method based on the electrochemical reduction of quinones in the presence of the free fatty acids found in biodiesel on the glassy carbon electrode surface in the range of 0.4V to 0.65V versus Ag/AgCl/Cl (3molL1). The proposed method was validated.

Development of a portable electroanalytical method using nickel modified screen-printed carbon electrode for ethinylestradiol determination in organic fertilizers

Luiz R. G. Silva, Jose G. A. Rodrigues, Juliana P. Franco, Layla P. Santos, Eliane D'Elia, Wanderson Roma, Rafael de Q. Ferreira

Summary: A fast, sensitive, inexpensive, and portable method was developed for determining ethinylestradiol in urine and struvite, using square wave voltammetry and screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with electrodeposited nickel film. The method showed high precision and accuracy in detecting ethinylestradiol in various samples without significant matrix effects or interference from other drugs. This method has the potential to be applied on-site in a practical and fast manner, requiring small amounts of sample.

Summary: The anticorrosive activity of furfural derivatives on mild steel immersed in CO2-saturated formation water solution was evaluated. Furfural thio-semicarbazone showed high inhibition efficiency of 90.2% for 72 hours of immersion. In-situ synthesis of the same molecule in the corrosive medium also demonstrated good efficiency of 82.2% for 24 hours of immersion, but it decreased over time due to incomplete conversion of the precursors.

Is it possible to use the Langmuir Isotherm in electrochemical studies? A critical view on the subject

Tatiana C. Almeida, Jessica N. Cunha, Eliane D'Elia, Oscar Rosa Mattos

Summary: This article critically evaluates the literature on the use of the Langmuir isotherm in inhibitor research. The validity of the Langmuir isotherm has been challenged, particularly by Walczak et al. (2019), leading to its rejection by some researchers. Imposing limitations on the Langmuir isotherm would affect heterogeneous kinetics, impedance interpretation, and other transient techniques. This discussion paper provides a more in-depth analysis of these aspects.

The role of soybean meal extracts proteins in the inhibition of mild steel acid corrosion

Klicia Carla de Santana de Lima, Victor Magno Paiva, Marcos Gustavo Araujo Schwarz, Nathalia Martins Bomfim Barreto, Daniel Perrone, Eliane D'Elia

Summary: This research examined the corrosion inhibition effect of three extracts from soybean meal and a soybean protein commercial sample on mild steel, using mass loss tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). The soybean meal extracts' anti-corrosive properties were investigated by normalizing the peptide/protein amount. The inhibitors were characterized chemically and the surface of mild steel was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that all inhibitors showed the same inhibition efficiency when the normalization in peptide/protein amount was performed, indicating that proteins/peptides are responsible for inhibiting corrosion. For example, at 100 mg L-1 in protein content, the inhibition efficiency was 84% and 82% from EIS and PDP results, and 89% and 93-94% after 2 and 24 h immersion time, respectively, from mass loss measurements. Polarization curves indicated that all inhibitors behave as a mixed-type inhibitor, particularly for the cathodic branch. SEM results suggested that all extracts promoted a protective action against corrosion of the mild steel in H2SO4 solution.
