Summary: This study assessed the prognostic performances of three pathological classifications in gastric cancer patients and developed a novel prognostic nomogram for individually predicting overall survival (OS). The results showed that the modified Lauren classification demonstrated superior predictive ability for OS, and the new prognostic nomogram incorporating this classification outperformed the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition tumor-nodemetastasis classification in terms of discriminative ability, model fitting performance, and net benefits.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic significance of inflammatory indexes for patients with different Lauren classifications of GC. SII, pTNM stage, and postoperative chemotherapy were independent risk factors for prognosis in intestinal type GC, while PLR and pTNM stage were independent risk factors for diffuse/mixed type GC. Nomogram models showed good predictive accuracy for 5-year prognosis in both groups of GC patients.

Summary: This study found that LMOD1 is an oncogene associated with diffuse gastric cancer. LMOD1 affects the occurrence and development of EMT by regulating the FAK-Akt/mTOR pathway and promotes the peritoneal metastasis of gastric cancer cells. LMOD1 can be used as a novel therapeutic target for gastric cancer.

Summary: The study found that cardia gastric cancer is not an independent prognostic factor. Cardia gastric cancer patients with intestinal-type tumors had more common PIK3CA amplification, while those with diffuse-type tumors had more common HER2 expression. Targeted therapy may be beneficial for these specific patient subgroups.

Summary: A considerable amount of recent research has been conducted on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the use of AI in CRC surgery is not as advanced as in screening, diagnosis, and prognosis due to the complexity and variability in the surgical field and the lack of annotated video banks. This review summarizes the potential areas for AI application in CRC surgery, including phase and action recognition, navigation, endoscopy control, real-time analysis, biopsy, and imaging. The review also discusses the current progress in robotic treatment and the possibility of automated CRC robotic surgery. In order to widely utilize AI in CRC surgical treatment, the development of AI models that can replicate the skills of expert surgeons, the creation of large and complex datasets, and the standardization of surgical procedures are essential.

Summary: This study investigated the association between tumor microenvironment (TME) characterization and relapse and survival outcomes in gastric cancer (GC) patients. The researchers developed a TME-classifier, TME-cluster, and TME-based risk score, which can predict chemotherapy and immunotherapy response. The findings suggest that TME characterization is significantly associated with tumor recurrence and prognosis, and the proposed TME-classifier can guide individualized treatment decisions.

Summary: Surgery remains the most important and effective method for treating gastric cancer, and its development over the past century has shifted towards standardized and individualized approaches focusing on accurate resection and quality of life. This trend has greatly impacted the evolution of surgical treatments, such as minimally invasive surgeries and function-preserving surgeries. It is essential for gastric surgeons to continuously pursue understanding the development and current status of gastric cancer surgery while exploring the remaining academic controversies.

Summary: The WSG-ADAPT-TP trial demonstrated that pathological complete response (pCR) after 12 weeks of chemotherapy-free de-escalated neoadjuvant therapy was associated with excellent survival in hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive early breast cancer (HR+/HER2+ EBC) without further adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Patients with pCR had similar 5-year invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) rates whether or not they received ACT. Patient selection based on biomarkers or molecular subtypes may improve efficacy of HER2-targeted approaches without systemic chemotherapy.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether novel and conventional cardiorenal biomarkers in patients before transcatheter aortic valve implantation may be associated with cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) type 1. Serum NT-proBNP and urine biomarkers (hepcidin-25, NGAL, IL-6) were measured, and it was found that patients with CRS type 1 had longer hospital stay and had higher readmission rate within 6 months after discharge. The NT-proBNP/urine hepcidin-25 ratio was identified as an independent modifier of CRS type 1.

Summary: This study compared cannulated screw fixation, dynamic hip screw fixation, hemiarthroplasty, and total hip arthroplasty in patients with displaced or non-displaced femoral neck fracture, evaluating surgical and functional outcomes, reoperation rates, and postoperative complications. The results showed that total hip arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty were superior to cannulated screw fixation and dynamic hip screw fixation in terms of life quality and functional outcomes. Thus, hip arthroplasty should be preferred over internal fixation for femoral neck fractures, with internal fixation considered only in individual cases.
