The present study investigated changes in both the growth parameters and the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems of maize (Zea may L) plants grown in Typic Hapludalf soil containing an accumulation of Cu and Zn. This accumulation developed because the soil received nineteen applications of pig slurry in no-tillage system over seven years. In this study, the maize plants were grown for fifteen and 25 days after emergence (DAE) in pots containing undisturbed and disturbed soil samples collected from a field experiment that received the rates 0, 20, 40 and 80 m(3) ha(-1) of pig slurry, which totalized the amount of 0, 380, 760 and 1520 m(3) ha(-1) of pig slurry in seven years, respectively, and phosphorus (P) +potassium (K) treatment (in disturbed soil samples). The maize plants grown in the undisturbed soil samples with an accumulation of Cu and Zn did not indicate an apparent decrease in growth. However, when compared to the treatment with PK fertilization, the maize plants grown in the disturbed soil with pig slurry treatments indicated higher lipid peroxidation and a number of senescent leaves, as well as a significant decrease in plant height. Additionally, when compared to the PK treatment, the leaf superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase activities decreased and increased, respectively, with the addition of pig slurry treatments in the disturbed soil at 25 DAE. In general, when compared to the treatments with 20 m3 ha-1 of pig slurry and PK at fifteen and 25 DAE, the leaf ascorbic acid and nonprotein thiol groups concentrations decreased with the addition of 40 and 80 m(3) ha(-1) of pig slurry. This result suggests that the excess of Cu and Zn in the pig slurry significantly changed the antioxidant system of the maize plants. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Diabetes and hypertension: Pivotal involvement of purinergic signaling

Karine Paula Reichert, Milagros Fanny Vera Castro, Charles Elias Assmann, Nathieli Bianchin Bottari, Vanessa Valeria Miron, Andreia Cardoso, Naiara Stefanello, Vera Maria Melchiors Morsch, Maria Rosa Chitolina Schetinger

Summary: This review focuses on the role of the purinergic system in diabetes and hypertension, highlighting changes in the expression of P1 and P2 receptors, as well as the activities of CD39, CD73, and ADA. It suggests that manipulating the purinergic axis at various levels could potentially prevent or exacerbate the development of diabetes and hypertension as a compensatory mechanism.

Summary: No-till farming and manure application can help store carbon and improve soil quality, but organic fertilization poses risks to soil quality and the environment. Long-term N-based organic fertilization can increase crop yield but may lead to nutrient accumulation in the soil, threatening system sustainability.

Summary: This study found that long-term application of pig slurry can increase dry matter and soil carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stocks in clayey Typic Hapludox in southern Brazil. The recommended pig slurry dose equivalent to 100 or 200 kg ha(-1) of nitrogen can achieve the same or higher effects compared to mineral fertilizer treatments.

Summary: Adult Wistar rats were exposed to lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La(2)O(3)NPs) at different doses. Histological analysis revealed that higher doses of La2O3-NPs caused hepatic lesions in rats. However, the La2O3-NPs did not affect body weight, organ weight, and blood serum parameters. Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) were found in the kidneys of rats treated with high dose of La2O3-NPs. Lanthanum was detected in organs but not in the blood.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of caffeic acid (CA) on learning and memory tasks in diabetic rats. The researchers also assessed the impact of CA on the activities of specific enzymes and the density of certain receptors and inflammatory parameters in the cortex and hippocampus of diabetic rats. The results showed that CA improved learning and memory deficits, normalized enzyme activities, and modulated receptor density in the diabetic animals, suggesting its potential for treating cognitive deficits associated with the cholinergic and purinergic signaling pathways in diabetes. Summary: Plasma membrane anchored nucleotidases (E-ATPDases) play an important role in the hydrolysis and regulation of nucleotides in lymphocytes. The activities of E-ATPDases vary in different immune organs and resident subpopulations of lymphocytes. This study characterizes the E-ATPDases activities in bone marrow, thymus, and mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes of Wistar rats. The results suggest that the kinetic values of E-NTPDase activity in immune tissue lymphocytes could be an important therapeutic target for immune-related diseases.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effects of adding vegetable biocholine (VB) to pigs' diets to minimize the negative effects caused by daily aflatoxin intake. Consuming aflatoxin-contaminated feed reduced feed consumption and weight gain in piglets and caused oxidative stress in their intestines and livers. However, VB supplementation did not improve performance but showed hepatoprotective potential when facing aflatoxin challenge.

Curcumin and Vinblastine Disturb Ectonucleotides Enzymes Activity and Promote ROS Production in Human Cutaneous Melanoma Cells

Vinicius Leobet Lunkes, Tais Vidal Palma, Charles Elias Assmann, Vitor Bastianello Mostardeiro, Maria Rosa Chitolina Schetinger, Vera Maria Melchiors Morsch, Cinthia Melazzo de Andrade

Summary: Cancer, especially melanoma skin cancer, is a major cause of death. Curcumin, extracted from the Curcuma longa plant, shows potential as an adjuvant therapy for melanoma by modulating the immune response, oxidative stress, and purinergic signaling cascade. This study found that vinblastine, a chemotherapeutic agent, may increase adenosine concentration in melanoma cells, while curcumin increases reactive oxygen species production and disrupts purinergic signaling. Therefore, curcumin may be a promising addition to melanoma treatment.
