Three 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-alkylimidazolium chloride room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) [2OHimC(n)[Cl]; (n=0, 1, 4) have been synthesized from the appropriate imidazole precursors and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Their anti-microbial activities were investigated using the well-diffusion method. The viabilities of Escherichia coli, Aeromonas hydrophila, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica as a function of IL concentrations were studied. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and EC50 values for the present ILs were within the concentration range from 60 to 125 mM and 23 to 73 mM. The anti-microbial potencies of the present ILs were compared to a standard antibiotic, gentamicin. The finding affords additional perspective on the level of ILs toxicity to aquatic lifeforms and yet, this characteristic can be readily harnessed to detect microbial growth and activity. Summary: This study investigated the estimated people's fatalities percentage due to a methanol reactor incident from a newly proposed plant in Perak, Malaysia. Simulation using HYSYS, ALOHA and MARPLOT software showed that the reference plant and plant at 300 bars had the highest fatalities percentage, caused by the release of carbon dioxide through a 160 mm hole leakage.

Synthesis of carbon microspheres via hydrothermal carbonization of Sabal palms (Sabal palmetto) biomass for adsorption of methylene blue

Abdulrhman S. Al-Awadi, Mohanad El-Harbawi, Abdullah Algarawi, Abdulrahman Alalawi, Lahssen El Blidi, Maher M. Alrashed, Chun-Yang Yin

Summary: This paper reports new findings on the synthesis of carbon microspheres from a biomass precursor using a one-step hydrothermal carbonization process. The carbonization process primarily involved dehydration with partial decarboxylation. The microspheres were analyzed using elemental analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The produced microspheres were used as adsorbents for an industrial dye, and the data showed good fitting to the Langmuir model. The sub-micron-sized microspheres exhibited interesting textural characteristics with relatively low surface areas and porosities, along with oxygenated functional groups on the surface.

Greener approach for the separation of naphthenic acid from model oil using Pyrrolidinium-based amino acid ionic liquids

Ouahid Ben Ghanem, Maisara Shahrom Raja Shahrom, Syed Nasir Shah, Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Jean-Marc Leveque, Zahoor Ullah, Mohanad El-Harbawi, Mohamad Sahban Alnarabiji

Summary: Four new pyrrolidinium-based amino acid ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized. The physicochemical properties of these amino acid ionic liquids, such as viscosity, density, thermal stability, and surface tension, were investigated. These ionic liquids were used as a green chemistry approach to extract naphthenic acid from a model oil, and the influence of amino acid anions on the de-acidification process was assessed. The extraction results showed that a small amount of the ionic liquids was sufficient to extract naphthenic acid from the high total acid number configuration of the model oil. The regeneration and reusability of the synthesized ionic liquids were also analyzed, and the potential toxicological effect of the synthesized set on the aquatic system was determined through an antimicrobial activity assay.

Synthesis of Carbon Microspheres from Inedible Crystallized Date Palm Molasses: Influence of Temperature and Reaction Time

Mohanad El-Harbawi, Saeed Alhawtali, Abdulrhman S. Al-Awadi, Lahssen El Blidi, Maher M. Alrashed, Abdulrahman Alzobidi, Chun-Yang Yin

Summary: Carbon microspheres were prepared from inedible crystallized date palm molasses using hydrothermal carbonization. The effects of temperature and reaction time on the prepared materials were investigated. The highest yield was obtained at 250 degrees C and a reaction time of 6 h, with a diameter of approximately 5-9 μm. However, extending the reaction time beyond 6 h led to fusion and deformation of the microspheres. The synthesized materials exhibited a low BET surface area and a maximum adsorption capacity of 12 mg/g for methylene blue.
