Summary: This study investigates the effect of C2 methylation on the cohesive interaction of trifluoromethanesulfonate ionic liquids (ILs). The nature of the anion strongly influences the impact of C2 methylation. Strong-coordinating and smaller anions promote hydrogen bonding with the acidic hydrogen at the C2 position, while weak-coordinating and larger anions result in a dominant decrease in liquid entropy due to C2 methylation.

Summary: This study focuses on the investigation of a series of protic ionic liquids (PILs) with imidazolium and alkylimidazolium cations and analyzes the effects of anion nature and alkyl radical length in the cation structure on thermal and transport properties. The results show that the higher thermodynamic stability of an ion pair increases the PIL decomposition temperature. The melting points of salts decrease as the alkyl radical length in the cation becomes longer, indicating weaker ion-ion interaction in the ion pairs. A comparative analysis between protic ILs and corresponding ILs with the same radical in the cation structure and the same anion has been performed, suggesting that lower melting points of ILs with 1R3MeIm cations result from the weakening of both the ion-ion interaction and the hydrogen bond.

Summary: This study synthesized various alkylimidazolium tetrafuluoroborate salts and evaluated their capabilities as draw solutions for the FO desalination process. The carbon number of the cation was found to tune the phase transition temperature of the ionic liquids, and those with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in the range of 25℃ to 50℃ were considered suitable draw solutions. Furthermore, the study found that the diluted phases of the ionic liquids had low osmotic pressures, indicating minimal osmotic resistance in the post-treatment membrane process.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of using electrodialysis (ED) to recover 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid (IL), specifically N,N-dibutylimidazolium chloride ([C4C4IM]Cl). The results showed that ED allows for the recovery and concentration of [C4C4IM]Cl from dilute aqueous solutions, with the [C4C4IM]Cl content in the concentrates being over three times higher than in the initial solutions. The highest recovery and ED efficiency were obtained when the initial [C4C4IM]Cl concentration in the solution was 20 g/L.

Summary: This paper reports new findings on the synthesis of carbon microspheres from a biomass precursor using a one-step hydrothermal carbonization process. The carbonization process primarily involved dehydration with partial decarboxylation. The microspheres were analyzed using elemental analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The produced microspheres were used as adsorbents for an industrial dye, and the data showed good fitting to the Langmuir model. The sub-micron-sized microspheres exhibited interesting textural characteristics with relatively low surface areas and porosities, along with oxygenated functional groups on the surface.

Summary: Four new pyrrolidinium-based amino acid ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized. The physicochemical properties of these amino acid ionic liquids, such as viscosity, density, thermal stability, and surface tension, were investigated. These ionic liquids were used as a green chemistry approach to extract naphthenic acid from a model oil, and the influence of amino acid anions on the de-acidification process was assessed. The extraction results showed that a small amount of the ionic liquids was sufficient to extract naphthenic acid from the high total acid number configuration of the model oil. The regeneration and reusability of the synthesized ionic liquids were also analyzed, and the potential toxicological effect of the synthesized set on the aquatic system was determined through an antimicrobial activity assay.

Summary: Carbon microspheres were prepared from inedible crystallized date palm molasses using hydrothermal carbonization. The effects of temperature and reaction time on the prepared materials were investigated. The highest yield was obtained at 250 degrees C and a reaction time of 6 h, with a diameter of approximately 5-9 μm. However, extending the reaction time beyond 6 h led to fusion and deformation of the microspheres. The synthesized materials exhibited a low BET surface area and a maximum adsorption capacity of 12 mg/g for methylene blue.
