Summary: A methodology integrating life-cycle assessment, life cycle cost assessment, and multi-objective optimization is proposed to establish a maintenance decision-making system. A case study in the pavement industry of China shows that user cost is dominant, while pavement design life, service life of maintenance alternatives, and the extension of design life have significant influence on the optimal maintenance schedule.

Summary: An important challenge in ecology is to understand variation in species' maximum intrinsic rate of population increase (r(max)). This study evaluates the relative importance of body mass, temperature, and depth on r(max) for sharks and rays, finding that both temperature and depth have separate effects on r(max) estimates. This research provides insights into the potential limiting factors for population growth in deep-sea sharks and rays.

Summary: The aim of our work was to test experimentally the hypothesis that global warming-induced changes in the thermal stratification of temperate zone lakes will increase fitness costs associated with diel vertical migrations in a planktonic cladoceran Daphnia. We cultured Daphnia magna in a programmable thermostatic chamber under thermal regimes corresponding to non-migratory and migrating animals, and exposed them to current and predicted future temperature conditions in stratified lakes. Analysis of life-history parameters confirmed an increase in metabolic costs resulting from vertical migration and the expected temperature differences between the epilimnion and hypolimnion.

Summary: This work demonstrates the use of poly(vinylferrocene) as a binder additive to improve the ionic conductivity of the Li-S battery cathode and act as a sulfide-confining agent. Electrochemical tests show enhanced rate capability and cycle life compared to baseline samples. The use of PvFc as a component in Li-S batteries expands its utility beyond its current use as an active material in organometallic batteries.

Summary: A fatigue stress equation associated with equivalent life is proposed based on the intrinsic damage dissipation energy. This proposed equation eliminates the need for additional HCF experiments by attaching a material parameter directly correlating with the fatigue strength exponent. Experimental results indicate that the proposed model outperforms the widely accepted Goodman relationship and SWT function. This proposal provides great potential for evaluating HCF lifetime under tensional fatigue loading with mean stress, further optimizing towards Walker's equation.

Summary: In this study, four food waste treatment technologies were evaluated using life cycle assessment and life cycle cost. It was found that anaerobic digestion outperforms the other technologies in terms of environmental impact, while landfill has the highest economic benefits. The study also explored the environmental emission reduction potential of anaerobic digestion and found that increasing resource utilization rate and treating household waste separately can lead to significant reductions in environmental impact.

Summary: The study found that during high-rate cycling, the reduction potential of lead ions on the coated carbon is more negative than that on the lead paste, resulting in more severe sulfation on the coated carbon. Sulfation is more likely to occur in areas where the coated carbon is adjacent to the lead paste, significantly impacting the performance of the ultra-battery.

Summary: This study provides a systematic literature review on the environmental and sustainability assessment of dark fermentative biohydrogen production. The majority of studies focus on life cycle inventory analysis, with a particular interest in the storage and application of biohydrogen. However, there are issues regarding the formulation of clear study goals and scopes, resulting in misrepresented environmental outcomes. Thus, further research and data support are needed for an accurate sustainability assessment of biohydrogen production.

Summary: Coordination compounds are promising materials for lithium storage due to their designable structures and abundant active sites, but their electrode stability and performance issues need to be addressed. Studies on isostructural one-dimensional compounds showed that the electronic structures of metal centers influence the lithium-storage mechanism.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the long-term costs for a single-family house in Sweden using the life cycle cost method. Results showed that decreasing the discount rate significantly increased the total costs, with construction costs being a major component. The findings will be useful for decision-makers in the building sector.

Summary: In order to achieve a sustainable circular economy, it is crucial to maximize the life cycle of physical assets. This paper discusses various models for evaluating the life cycle of physical assets, taking into account factors such as market value, devaluation methods, and Fisher's Equation. These models consider both expenses and profits, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation. The results demonstrate the robustness of the approach and its ability to minimize resource consumption and contribute to a more sustainable world.

Summary: The decarbonization process of the construction sector requires a shift from a linear to a circular economy, and the role of designers and structural engineers is crucial. This study provides design objectives and principles based on Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) for achieving sustainable renovation. Comparative analysis of a case study building confirms that LCT-based retrofit solutions have less environmental impact compared to traditional interventions and demolition and reconstruction scenarios.

Summary: This study develops geometrical models to describe the structural component properties of large-format cylindrical lithium-ion cells and explores their performance in fast-charging processes. The results show that cells with aluminum housings have slightly lower volumetric energy density (3%-4%) but higher gravimetric energy density (9%-11%) compared to cells with nickel plated steel housings. The electrical and thermal resistances imposed by the connection between the jelly roll and the cell ends significantly influence the cell's performance.

Summary: By evaluating the responses of freshwater mussels exposed to industrial wastewater, this study aimed to assess the impact of different chemicals on molecular biomarkers. The majority of responses showed small effect sizes with non-significant differences, but certain biomarkers exhibited significant differences in activity and expression between the exposed and control groups, suggesting the need for further investigation into the reliability and stability of biomarkers in Anodonta anatina.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration-dependence of selected gene transcripts as potential biomarkers for chemical stress using freshwater mussels. The results showed that the expression levels of certain transcripts decreased in the digestive glands with increasing water copper concentrations, while they increased in the gills. However, the overall response magnitudes were small and the sensitivity was moderate, which may limit their potential application as general biomarkers of chemical stress.

Summary: In this study, the optimal foraging strategy of Atlantic cod was investigated, taking into account both macro- and micro-nutritional requirements. The study found that proteins are crucial for gonad development, and the energy acquired from dietary protein should be twice that acquired from lipids, with a small increase in lipid requirements during gonad growth. The study also revealed that cod consumed more ARA-rich crabs in the months prior to spawning, despite their poor energetic value, thus supporting the model predictions.
