The alterations in behavior may be attributed to neurosensory or physiological defects caused by oil exposure, leading to sedative behaviors resembling anesthesia.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial and physico-chemical characteristics of cold smoked sea bass (CSSB), a novel italian fish product. The results showed the presence of bacterial contamination from raw materials, the environment, and the production process. High levels of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and total bacteria count (TBC) were observed during storage, but did not significantly affect the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N). Pathogenic bacteria were not detected. Cold smoked sea bass offers high nutritional value and excellent microbial quality, making it a beneficial food source.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of genetic selection for growth in European sea bass in response to a challenge with an alternative diet. The results showed that European sea bass selected for 7 generations performed better in terms of growth, with decreased fat content and increased nutritional value of flesh. The dietary treatment had little effect on fish growth performance, indicating successful replacement of fishmeal and fish oil. Therefore, multi-trait genetic selection can improve the ability of European sea bass to adapt to alternative feeds with low fishmeal and fish oil.

Summary: Incorporating environmentally sustainable plant-based protein sources into aquafeeds is important, but the effects of specific plant proteins on different fish species need to be evaluated. Previous studies showed that wheat gluten at less than 4% inclusion had a negative impact on the growth and survival rate of juvenile cobia. In this study, the effects of wheat gluten inclusion in a plant-based diet for juvenile European sea bass were evaluated, and it was found that 4% dietary wheat gluten was well tolerated by the fish.

Summary: Brackish aquaponics using euryhaline fish and halophyte plants have potential as sustainable method for functional food production and high nutritional, commercial, and pharmaceutical value. The study found that sea bass exhibited better growth performance and feed conversion rate at 8 ppt and 14 ppt salinity levels compared to 20 ppt, while rock samphire showed better growth and survival at 8 ppt. Nitrate and phosphorous removal efficiency were higher at 8 ppt and 14 ppt, and essential oil yield of rock samphire was highest at 14 ppt. Overall, this research demonstrates the satisfactory growth performance of sea bass and rock samphire in a tailored brackish aquaponic system.

Summary: The present study used a metatranscriptomic approach to investigate the expression of gut microbial genes in farmed gilthead sea bream. The researchers found that fungal transcripts were as abundant as bacterial ones, contrary to previous rRNA amplicon-based studies. The study also revealed that dietary intervention and different growth rates of fish influenced the metatranscriptome, with bacteria primarily shaping vitamin and amino acid metabolism and rhythmic and symbiotic processes, while fungi played a more specific role in configuring host immune, digestive, and endocrine processes.

Summary: This study provides a detailed characterization of sex chromosomes and asexual transmission in Eurasian brine shrimp. The researchers identified a small differentiated region of sex chromosomes that is shared by all sexual and asexual lineages, supporting the shared ancestry of these chromosomes. It was also found that recombination suppression has independently spread to larger sections of the chromosome in the American and Eurasian lineages. Additionally, the study suggests that parthenogenesis in these shrimp is partly controlled by a locus on the Z chromosome, highlighting the interplay between sex determination and asexuality.

Summary: The AquaIMPACT H2020 EU project aims to improve the competitiveness of European Aquaculture by integrating selective breeding and nutrition, while promoting the production of high-quality fish with limited environmental impact. This study evaluated the changes in gut microbiota with diet along the production cycle in genetically improved fish and reference fish. The results showed that the gut microbiota composition had less influence on the growth of genetically improved fish, but their intestinal function and gene expression profiles were enhanced.

Summary: A new parasite species, Endolimax carassius, was identified as the causative agent of systemic granulomatous disease in goldfish. Phylogenetic analyses showed that this goldfish parasite species is closely related to Endolimax piscium, the causative agent of systemic granulomatous disease in Senegalese sole. The discovery of a considerable diversity of Endolimax spp. among fish highlights the importance of characterizing these parasites in order to understand their evolution and pathogenic potential.

Summary: This study explores the best experimental conditions to set up an in vivo infection model capable of mimicking the sparicotylosis signs observed in farmed diseased fish. The experimental setup for parasite transmission consisted of a recipient fish tank with naive GSB receiving water from two S. chrysophrii-infected donor tanks. The study provides an advancement for studying S. chrysophrii's biology and its interaction with its host, as well as for further researching treatment alternatives and prophylactic measures.
