Summary: This study found significant differences in the oral microbiota of patients with PD compared to healthy controls, possibly due to factors such as dysphagia, drooling, and salivary pH. Understanding the factors influencing their oral microbiota could lead to the development of diagnostic and treatment strategies to improve the quality of life and survival of these patients.

Summary: Research findings have shown that increasing self-reported gingival bleeding frequency is associated with increased gingival bacterial diversity. Frequent gingival bleeding is associated with increased abundance of certain bacteria (such as Porphyromonas endodontalis, Treponema denticola, and Fretibacterium spp.), but decreased abundance of bacteria within the gram-positive phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. Additionally, using dental floss and mouthwash twice daily is associated with increased total abundance of bacteria in the Proteobacteria phylum, but decreased bacterial diversity.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of an oral hygiene intervention on oral health in individuals with different degrees of dementia. The results show that the effectiveness of the intervention varies depending on the level of cognitive impairment. Significant improvements in oral health parameters were observed in subjects without dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and mild dementia. However, in moderate and severe dementia patients, although oral hygiene improved, oral health deteriorated. These findings suggest that alternative approaches should be considered for improving oral health in individuals with severe dementia.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a 7-day oral care program using an aroma solution on 58 dementia patients in a long-term care hospital. The experimental group received oral care with a solution containing peppermint, tea tree, and lemon essential oils, while the control group received a saline solution. The results showed significant improvements in oral condition, salivary pH, and halitosis for the experimental group, indicating that aroma solution oral care can improve the oral health of older dementia patients in long-term care facilities.

Summary: The objective of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness of oral and dental hygiene protocols (DHPs) in reducing the incidence and severity of oral mucositis (OM) during antineoplastic treatment. The analysis included 25 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 14 non-randomized controlled trials (n-RCTs) involving a total of 2863 patients. The results showed that mouth rinses and DHPs can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of OM.
