Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the differences in gastrointestinal hormone response to food intake between individuals with and without obesity. The findings suggest that individuals with obesity have lower concentrations of total ghrelin and total peptide YY compared to controls, which may contribute to lower postprandial hunger ratings. However, there were no significant differences in other gastrointestinal hormones or appetite ratings. The study highlights the need for more comprehensive research to determine if these differences are a cause or consequence of obesity.

Summary: PRAME is a cancer testis antigen that is highly expressed in melanoma. However, the interpretation of PRAME immunostaining is not standardized, making it difficult to interpret. In this study, PRAME-stained histological slides of superficial spreading melanomas (SSM) and dysplastic nevi (DN) were analyzed using a digital pathology platform. A cut-off score of 97.67 cells/mm(2) was defined to distinguish between DN and SSM. The computer-aided assessment of PRAME immunostaining is a useful tool in dermatopathology to differentiate between DN and SSM.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain disorder with multifactorial causes, and disturbed serotonergic function, particularly in the 5-HT3 receptor family, is associated with IBS. Certain gene variants (SNPs) in the HTR3 genes have been found to be associated with IBS-D, a particular subtype of IBS characterized by diarrhea. A multi-center study confirmed that the HTR3E c.*76G > A (rs56109847 = rs62625044) variant is a risk factor for female IBS-D, and expression analysis showed reduced levels of HTR3E in the sigmoid colon of IBS-D patients.

Summary: This study elucidated a novel mechanism in colon cancer involving targeting the serotonin transporter to promote the uptake and catabolism of extracellular tryptophan, leading to serotonin biosynthesis and production of oncogenic metabolites. Inhibition of serotonin transporter induced a compensatory effect by promoting tryptophan uptake and catabolism, ultimately enhancing the anti-tumor effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Summary: This study found increased variability in the colonic metabolome and a trend towards increased colonic serotonin in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However, there was no significant difference in the expression of serotonin synthesis and transport genes between the SIDS and non-SIDS control groups. Microbiome analysis also showed no significant difference between the two groups.

Summary: This study utilized digital pathology and image platform QuPath to analyze the digitized 5-hmC-stained histological slides of superficial spreading melanomas (SSM) and dysplastic compound nevi (DN). The results showed that the assessment of 5-hmC expression in the epidermis and dermo-epidermal junction slightly outperformed dermal immunoreactivity in distinguishing between DN and SSM.

Summary: This article introduces an artificial neural network tool to quantify power loss in solar photovoltaic modules due to soiling and partial shading effects. The proposed method consists of three main stages: segmentation, resizing, and performance prediction. Compared to state-of-the-art computer vision architectures, the approach achieves similar results with a significant reduction in computational cost.

Summary: Based on PAR2 gene knockout, it was found that Nesfatin-1 central and peripheral pathways for regulating IBS colonic motility and mTOR expression were affected. It is speculated that Nesfatin-1 may regulate IBS colonic motility through the PAR2/mTOR signaling pathway with both central and peripheral intervention methods.

Summary: This study aimed to automatically evaluate the tumor microenvironment in colon cancer whole-slide images, quantifying TME descriptors through a neural network and identifying stroma as an independent predictor of progression-free interval. Validation on cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas project showed high necrosis and lymphocyte components tend to be correlated with poor PFI.
