Background. Visceral adiposity is the major risk factor for paediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Aims. Determine the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease according to the visceral fat quartile. Subjects. 181 obese adolescents including 113 girls (16.58 +/- 1.56 years) and 68 boys (16.87 +/- 1.62 years) were evaluated. Methods. The inclusion criteria were obesity and post-pubertal stage of Tanner. Visceral fat of obese adolescents was distributed in quartiles after ultrasound nonalcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosis. Results. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence was 45.30%. It was observed that 62.07% and 76.47% of girls and boys with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were found in the 4th quartile. In a multivariate logistic analysis it was observed that only visceral fat remained statistically significant, every I cm increase in visceral fat was associated with a 1.97 fold (95% CI 1.06-3.66) in boys and 2.08 fold (95% CI 1.38-3.13) in girls increased risk to develop nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Indeed it was verified a positive correlation between visceral fat, body mass index, insulin levels, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index and steatosis degree. Conclusions. Our findings suggested that the expansion of visceral fat was a determinant factor to increase nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence and the visceral fat measured by ultrasound might be a good predictor to identify risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in obese adolescents. It was confirmed by a stronger correlation between visceral fat and body mass index. (c) 2007 Editrice Gastroenterologica Italiana S.r.l. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: In this study, the presence of metabolic syndrome in Brazilian adolescents with obesity was 47.76%. The most frequently reported abnormal measurements were waist circumference (100%), blood pressure (85%), and triglycerides (50.75%). Boys with obesity were more likely to meet the criteria for metabolic syndrome compared to girls.

Summary: This study aims to describe the sleep regularity of athletes using the Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) and investigate the effects of factors such as sex, competitive level, and sport type on their sleep/wake rhythm. The findings reveal that international level athletes, female athletes, and individual sport athletes have better sleep regularity.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the relationships between serum-free fatty acids (FA), inflammatory processes, and depressive symptoms in obese adolescents. The results showed positive correlations between depressive symptoms and saturated fatty acids (SFA) content, body fat, and inflammatory adipokines. On the other hand, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content was negatively correlated with depressive symptoms. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the causality between dietary SFA and depression in obese individuals.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of an active warm-up and time-of-day variation on repeated-sprint performance and post-exercise recovery. The results showed that a warm-up improved sprint performance, and sprints performed in the late afternoon were better. Additionally, warm-up also led to faster post-exercise recovery.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the direct influence of training load on sleep behavior during the tapering phase of training for young swimmers. The results show that there is no significant influence of training load on sleep variables. However, a strong association between total sleep time (TST) and external load (EL) was observed in the irregular sleep group.

Summary: This article presents a case study of a 28-year-old woman who died of asthma despite being initially diagnosed with moderate asthma and prescribed regular treatment. The study highlights the importance of prioritizing asthma in primary health care, including early diagnosis, asthma management, and patient education to identify worsening symptoms and manage exacerbations according to a written asthma plan. This approach may help reduce premature and preventable asthma deaths.

Summary: Intermittent fasting (IF) is commonly used by combat sports athletes for weight loss but may decrease performance. This study examined the effects of IF on body weight and Taekwondo performance. The results showed that IF led to a decrease in body weight in the first two weeks but stabilized afterwards. Performance in vertical jumping had different patterns in fed and fasted states. Despite the decrease in body weight, IF did not significantly impact performance.
