Growth retardation, associated with delayed puberty, is a frequent feature in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially with Crohn's disease. It is mainly induced by malnutrition and the effects of the inflammatory process on the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 axis or on the growth plate. Therefore, control of disease activity and mucosal healing are paramount to promote growth and adequate pubertal onset. Current therapeutic strategies for maintenance in IBD include anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressives, and, more recently, biologic agents. Although these treatments are efficient in minimizing inflammation and inducing prolonged remission, their long-term effects on growth and final height remain controversial. Furthermore, glucocorticoid therapy, even though very efficient in inducing remission, clearly shows deleterious effects on growth, which is not the case for exclusive enteral nutrition showing comparable results regarding induction of remission. Thus regular assessment of weight, height and pubertal stage is essential in children and adolescents with chronic disease, namely IBD. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation The Swiss population-based CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study

Daryoush Samim, Damien Choffat, Peter Vollenweider, Gerard Waeber, Pedro Marques-Vidal, Marie Mean

Summary: The point prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and AF + atrial flutter (AFL) in the city of Lausanne (Switzerland), assessed between 2014 and 2017, was low but increased with age and in men.

Ten-Year Evolution of Statin Eligibility and Use in a Population-Based Cohort

Melanie Rochat, Benoit Delabays, Pedro-Manuel Marques-Vidal, Peter Vollenweider, Francois Mach, Julien Vaucher

Summary: A study using data from a 10-year follow-up of a population-based cohort found that the management of dyslipidemia, especially in secondary prevention and in women, is suboptimal. According to the guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology, a low proportion of eligible participants were using statins, and the achievement rate of low-density lipoproteins cholesterol target levels was also low. Additionally, women were less likely to receive high-intensity treatment.

Combining European and US risk prediction models with polygenic risk scores to refine cardiovascular prevention: the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus Study

Roxane de La Harpe, Christian W. Thorball, Claire Redin, Stephane Fournier, Olivier Mueller, Davide Strambo, Patrik Michel, Peter Vollenweider, Pedro Marques-Vidal, Jacques Fellay, Julien Vaucher

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether using polygenic risk scores improves the prediction of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk when combined with clinical scores. The results showed that combining a polygenic risk score with clinical risk scores significantly improved risk reclassification for patients with intermediate risk for cardiovascular disease.

Early menopause and cardiovascular risk factors: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Zayne Milena Roa-Diaz, Faina Wehrli, Irene Lambrinoudaki, Catherine Gebhard, Iris Baumgartner, Pedro Marques-Vidal, Arjola Bano, Peter Francis Raguindin, Taulant Muka

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between early natural menopause and changes in cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). Postmenopausal women from the Swiss CoLaus study were included in the analysis. The study found that early menopause may be associated with changes in glucose metabolism, but has little impact on other CVRFs.

Lower calcium and iron intake in adolescent gymnasts: A case of concern for youth sports nutrition

Filipa Vicente, Marcela Holanda, Renata Ramalho, Joa Mendes, Pedro Marques-Vidal, Paula Pereira

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine whether young gymnasts were consuming adequate amounts of nutrients, particularly calcium and iron. The results showed that Portuguese gymnasts consume a high amount of ultra-processed items and a low amount of calcium and iron, despite having a sufficient macronutrient distribution.

Geoffroy, Martin Preisig, Raphael Heinzer

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the sleep differences between different subtypes of major depressive disorder (MDD). The study found that current melancholic MDD was associated with decreased sleep quality and increased wake after sleep onset, while remitted unspecified MDD was associated with increased rapid eye movements density.

Association of clinical and genetic risk factors with management of dyslipidaemia: analysis of repeated cross-sectional studies in the general population of Lausanne, Switzerland

Valeriya Chekanova, Nazanin Abolhassani, Julien Vaucher, Pedro Marques-Vidal

Summary: This study assessed the importance of clinical and genetic factors in the management of dyslipidaemia in the general population. It found that the management of dyslipidaemia in Switzerland is suboptimal, and the use of high potency statins is hindered by low posology. The use of genetic risk scores in the management of dyslipidaemia is not recommended.

Promotion of healthy nutrition in primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention: a clinical consensus statement from the European Association of Preventive Cardiology

Vassilios S. Vassiliou, Vasiliki Tsampasian, Ana Abreu, Donata Kurpas, Elena Cavarretta, Martin O'Flaherty, Zoe Colombet, Monika Siegrist, Delphine De Smedt, Pedro Marques-Vidal

Summary: This paper discusses practical approaches to improving nutrition in various cardiovascular settings, including primary care, cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, paediatric cardiology, and public health. It emphasizes the importance of nutrition assessment, individualized nutritional plans, and the use of technology in promoting healthier dietary habits. The paper also highlights the significance of nutritional counseling in managing familial hypercholesterolaemia and congenital heart disease, and suggests the implementation of policies to promote healthy eating.

Topography of associations between cardiovascular risk factors and myelin loss in the ageing human brain

Olga Trofimova, Adeliya Latypova, Giulia DiDomenicantonio, Antoine Lutti, Ann-Marie G. de Lange, Matthias Kliegel, Silvia Stringhini, Pedro Marques-Vidal, Julien Vaucher, Peter Vollenweider, Marie-Pierre F. Strippoli, Martin Preisig, Ferath Kherif, Bogdan Draganski

Summary: MRI data from over 1000 participants between the ages of 46 and 87 reveals that cardiovascular risk factors are associated with myelin loss and neuroinflammation in the brain. Associations between CVRFs and white matter microstructure were observed predominantly in limbic and prefrontal tracts. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was linked to higher myelin content independently of CVRFs.

Association between dietary phytochemical index, cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome in Switzerland. The CoLaus study

Magda Gamba, Zayne M. Roa-Diaz, Peter Francis Raguindin, Marija Glisic, Arjola Bano, Taulant Muka, Oscar H. Franco, Pedro Marques-Vidal

Summary: A diet high in phytochemical-rich foods, assessed through the dietary phytochemical index (DPI), is associated with lower waist circumference, body mass index, insulin, leptin, and hs-CRP values, as well as reduced odds of central obesity. This highlights the potential protective effect of phytochemical intake on cardiometabolic risk factors and emphasizes the importance of consuming high levels of phytochemical-rich foods for promoting overall metabolic health.
