Summary: The study compared colorectal cancer screening rates among breast and prostate cancer survivors in Southern Maryland, finding that factors such as living in metropolitan areas and comorbidities like obesity and diabetes were associated with lower screening rates for breast cancer survivors.

Summary: This study suggests that greater adherence to a diabetes risk reduction diet after diagnosis is associated with improved survival outcomes among a large number of breast cancer survivors, indicating that postdiagnosis dietary modifications consistent with type II diabetes prevention may be crucial for breast cancer survivors.

Summary: This study examined the trend of Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) utilization among cancer survivors and assessed individual characteristics associated with it. The results showed that the number of first-time DSMT users slowly increased over the years but suddenly dropped after 2016. However, the number of all DSMT users continued to increase and plateaued after 2016. Individual characteristics such as Hispanic ethnicity and Medicare-Medicaid dual eligibility were positively associated with both the initiation and retention of DSMT, while living in a metropolitan area posed as a barrier.

Summary: The present study aimed to assess the association between consumption of a diabetes risk reduction diet (DRRD) and breast cancer. The results showed that individuals with high adherence to DRRD had a 0.41 times lower risk of breast cancer, especially among postmenopausal and normal-weight women.

Summary: There is conflicting evidence regarding the association between metformin treatment and prostate cancer risk in diabetic men. Previous-year exposure to metformin is positively associated with prostate cancer risk, while exposure 2-7 years ago is negatively associated with risk. Further confirmation and understanding of these positive and negative associations are needed.

Summary: This study found that long-term cancer survivors are not at an increased risk of opioid-related emergency department visits or hospitalizations compared to persons without cancer. Guidelines and policies should focus on promoting non-opioid pain management approaches for older adults who have previous opioid use.

Summary: Many cancer survivors with co-morbid diabetes receive less diabetes management than their non-cancer counterparts. Racial/ethnic disparities exist in recommended diabetes care within 12 months of an incident breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer diagnosis. Black and Hispanic cancer survivors with diabetes are less likely to receive comprehensive diabetes care after cancer diagnosis compared to non-Hispanic Whites.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between overall diabetes, type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and breast cancer risk. The study found no overall association between diabetes and breast cancer risk, but revealed that women with T1D had a higher risk of breast cancer compared to women without diabetes. T2D was not associated with breast cancer risk overall, but there was a significantly increased risk in the short time window after T2D diagnosis.

Summary: Analysis of WBC DNA methylation in breast cancer cases and noncases revealed potential associations with breast cancer risk, although the specific patterns were not conclusively identified. Further research is needed to better understand the link between prediagnostic WBC DNA methylation marks and breast cancer.

Summary: In this real-world study, the choice of basal insulin in insulin-naive people with T2D was associated with all-cause mortality, with a lower mortality risk observed with detemir compared to glargine after adjusting for potential confounders. This association was more pronounced in individuals with obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the absolute and relative cancer-specific vs noncancer-specific mortality rates among long-term survivors of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer and identify associated risk factors. The results showed that patients at low risk had a higher noncancer-specific mortality compared with cancer-specific mortality, while patients at high risk had a higher cumulative incidence of cancer-specific mortality than noncancer-specific mortality.

Summary: This population-based cohort study explored the potential association between concurrent use of sulfonylureas and beta-blockers and the risk of severe hypoglycemia. The results showed that concomitant use of sulfonylureas and beta-blockers increased the risk of severe hypoglycemia compared to sulfonylurea use alone, and the cardioselectivity of beta-blockers did not seem to play a major role in this regard.

Summary: The study found that physicians perceived deprescribing discussions as potentially contentious, even among patients with falls. Physicians reported varying comfort levels with deprescribing strategies, with some feeling that the conversations might be better suited to others (e.g., pharmacists), while others had well-planned negotiation strategies. Patients reported a lack of clarity regarding the reasons and goals of deprescribing, as well as poor understanding of the seriousness of falls.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the situation of high-risk medication dispenses among older adults and find potential solutions. During the observation period, over one-third of older patients received high-risk medication after experiencing a fall or fracture. However, the study also found that older age, male gender, and non-Hispanic White ethnicity were associated with a lower risk. Furthermore, the research highlighted inconsistent assessments of falls by healthcare providers and a lack of standard documentation and decision support alerts in electronic health records. Therefore, future interventions should focus on improving fall assessments, providing clinician training, patient education resources, and building trusting patient-clinician relationships to ensure safe medication use.

Summary: Patients receiving ACEI or ARB therapy often neglect the recommended serum potassium and creatinine monitoring, possibly due to lack of knowledge and logistical barriers. Factors such as age, diabetes, hypertension, comorbidity index, medication class, and prescribing provider's specialty are associated with care gaps.
