OBJECTIVE-To analyze the relationship between maternal adiponectin (mAdiponectin) and cord blood adiponectin (cbAdiponectin) multimeric forms (high molecular weight [HMW], medium molecular weight [MMW], and low molecular weight [LMW]) in a cohort of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and normal glucose-tolerant (NGT) pregnant women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-A total of 212 women with a singleton pregnancy, 132 with NGT and 80 with GDM, and their offspring were studied. Maternal blood was obtained in the early third trimester and cord blood was obtained at delivery. Total adiponectin and the multimeric forms of adiponectin were determined in cord blood and maternal serum. Spearman rank correlation and stepwise linear correlation analysis were used to assess the relationship between cbAdiponectin levels and clinical and analytical parameters. RESULTS-No differences in cbAdiponectin concentration or its multimeric forms were observed in the offspring of diabetic mothers compared with NGT mothers. The HMW-to-total adiponectin ratio was higher in cord blood than in maternal serum, whereas the MMW- and LMW-to-total adiponectin ratio was lower. Cord blood total and HMW adiponectin levels were positively correlated with birth weight and the ponderal index (PI), whereas cord blood MMW adiponectin was negatively correlated with the PI. In addition, cbAdiponectin and its multimeric forms were correlated with mAdiponectin concentrations. In the multivariate analysis, maternal multimeric forms of adiponectin emerged as independent predictors of cbAdiponectin, its multimers, and their distribution. CONCLUSIONS-cbAdiponectin concentrations are independently related to mAdiponectin levels and unrelated to the diagnosis of GDM. Maternal multimeric forms of adiponectin are independent predictors of the concentrations of cbAdiponectin and its multimeric forms at delivery.

Summary: The study indicated that participants with high baseline perceived self-efficacy, higher fiber intake, multiple chronic conditions (especially depression) were more likely to successfully comply with an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet. Tailored interventions focusing on these factors may lead to greater dietary changes and nutritional improvements.

Pregnancy homocysteine and cobalamin status predict childhood metabolic health in the offspring

Alejandra Rojas-Gomez, Pol Sole-Navais, Pere Cavalle-Busquets, Gemma Ornosa-Martin, Carme Grifoll, Carla Ramos-Rodriguez, Joan Fernandez-Ballart, Luis Masana, Monica Ballesteros, Per Magne Ueland, Michelle M. Murphy

Summary: This study found that inadequate cobalamin status during pregnancy is associated with adverse metabolic health in mid-childhood, particularly in boys. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining adequate cobalamin levels during pregnancy to reduce the risk of negative health outcomes in offspring.

A 96-week, double-blind, randomized controlled trial comparing bexagliflozin to glimepiride as an adjunct to metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults

Summary: This study compared the effects of bexagliflozin tablets and glimepiride on the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes. It was found that bexagliflozin tablets were noninferior to glimepiride in lowering HbA1c levels, and were superior in reducing body mass and systolic blood pressure. Additionally, bexagliflozin tablets were associated with fewer hypoglycemic events and had a favorable effect on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

The NDDG criteria versus the IADPSG or the ADA criteria for diagnosing early-onset gestational diabetes mellitus or abnormal glucose tolerance

Nieves Luisa Gonzalez-Gonzalez, Enrique Gonzalez-Davila, Ana Megia, Pilar Pintado, Begona Vega, Erika Padron, Laura Perez-Conde, Nazaret Villalba, Fernando Bugatto

Summary: The effects of substituting the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) criteria with the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) or American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria for the diagnosis of early-onset gestational diabetes mellitus (Early-GDM) or first trimester abnormal glucose tolerance (1 t-AGT) were analyzed. Replacing the NDDG recommendations with the IADPSG or ADA criteria resulted in a large number of women with higher risks of adverse perinatal outcomes being deprived of early treatment and other women with lower risks being treated.

An overview of vitamins as epidrugs for colorectal cancer prevention

Hatim Boughanem, Pallavi Kompella, Francisco J. Tinahones, Manuel Macias-Gonzalez

Summary: Gene expression can be regulated by epigenomic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and chromosome remodeling. Vitamins, as natural bioactive compounds, have been found to modify epigenetic patterns and potentially impact the risk of cancer, including colorectal cancer (CRC). This review examines the relationship between vitamins and CRC risk through epidemiological and observational studies and discusses the potential of using vitamins as epigenetic modifiers for CRC treatment. Although more studies with better designs are needed, understanding the molecular mechanisms of vitamin-mediated epigenetic regulation can help identify effective therapeutic targets for CRC prevention and treatment.

Summary: This study evaluated the obstetrical outcomes, ultrasonographic characteristics, and final diagnosis of fetal megacystis (FM). The results showed that most FM cases were detected in the second trimester, and the majority of pregnancies were electively terminated. FM was often associated with other ultrasound abnormalities, with the most common being umbilical cord cyst. About 44% of FM cases had an identifiable cause.

The ANGPTL3-4-8 Axis in Normal Gestation and in Gestational Diabetes, and Its Potential Involvement in Fetal Growth

Summary: This study evaluated the response of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 after a meal intake in women with gestational diabetes and normal glucose tolerance, and examined their gene expressions in different placental locations. It was observed that ANGPTL4 did not respond after the meal intake in the gestational diabetes group, unlike the control group. The expression pattern of ANGPTL3 in the placenta was glucose tolerance-dependent. Additionally, the expressions of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 were associated with birth weight and placental weight in the gestational diabetes group, suggesting a role in regulating nutrient passage across the placenta.

Summary: There is limited information on healthcare resource consumption in older patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. In this study, we analyzed the consumption of resources in older patients and compared patients aged 75 and older with those aged 60-74. The results showed that age is not an independent determining factor in healthcare resource consumption in older patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.
