Summary: Patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) experience sleep disturbances both before and after surgery, with improvements in sleep quality observed within the first 3 months postoperatively. The patterns of sleep changes differ based on preoperative sleep disturbance. Patients who undergo total hip arthroplasty are more likely to achieve clinically improved sleep by 3 months compared with those who undergo knee arthroplasty.

Summary: The study found a strong correlation between regular statin therapy and reduced postoperative mortality following surgical resection for rectal cancer. Despite a higher rate of cardiovascular comorbidity, statin users demonstrated significantly higher survival rates after surgery. Further investigation is warranted to determine the causal relationship.

Summary: Despite advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care, complication rates after colorectal cancer surgery have remained stable. It has been suggested that colon microbiota may play a role in colonic homeostasis and the development of complications after surgery. This study aims to evaluate the impact of colonic dysbiosis on the postoperative course.

Summary: The present study aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric qualities of the Turkish version of the Fear of Sleep Inventory Short Form (FOSI-SF). The results showed that the Turkish version of FOSI-SF demonstrated satisfactory levels of internal consistency and significant correlations with measures of insomnia, repetitive negative thinking, and psychopathology as indicative of convergent validity. Moreover, FOSI-SF had significant associations with insomnia symptoms only among the participants who had clinically significant levels of PTSD.

Summary: Tonsillotomy results in lower pain levels, less pharyngeal swelling, and less weight loss compared to tonsillectomy in children with OSA. School-age children who undergo tonsillotomy experience better pain relief on the fifth, sixth, and seventh postoperative days compared to preschool children.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence and predictors of long-term postoperative opioid use in an orthopaedic center using online patient reported measures. The results showed that 12.5% of patients used opioids long-term after surgery, with 3.3% being new users. Preoperative opioid use and affected body region were significant predictors of long-term opioid use.

Summary: We developed a nomogram to predict postoperative sleep disturbance (PSD) in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Factors such as female sex, anxiety, dissatisfaction with ward environment, absence of regional nerve block, postoperative nausea and vomiting, prolonged PACU stay, higher doses of midazolam and sufentanil, and higher postoperative pain scores were found to be associated with PSD. The nomogram showed good predictive performance and can help identify patients at risk for PSD.

Summary: The study found a correlation between preoperative sleep disturbance and acute postoperative pain severity, with women with poor sleep quality having distinct changes in gut microbiota composition. Certain genera were associated with pain and anxiety symptoms, indicating a potential relationship between gut microbiota, sleep disturbances, and postoperative pain.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term opioid treatment on sex hormone disturbances, sexual function, and depression in patients with chronic noncancer pain in Taiwan. The results showed a high prevalence of depression diagnosis, low sex hormone levels, and reduced sexual function among patients, highlighting the importance of regular screenings for further management.
